Chelsea 1-2 Tottenham: Richarlison's last-gasp winner seals Sydney Super Cup triumph

Match Report
Roberto De Zerbi's unbeaten start to life as Tottenham boss continued as Richarlison's 92nd-minute winner sealed a 2-1 victory over Chelsea in the Sydney Super Cup.

Estevao had cancelled out Sandro Tonali's opener before Spurs saw Kevin Danso sent off early in the second half, but the 10 men found a way through late in the day.

A feisty opening at Accor Stadium saw Spurs take the lead against the run of play in the 17th minute, with £100m summer signing Tonali netting his first goal for the club after his shot deflected off Levi Colwill and into the back of the net.

But Chelsea needed just four minutes to get themselves level through Estevao, who got himself in front of Andy Robertson to head Jamie Gittens' cross in at the back post.

Joao Pedro then stabbed wide following a loose pass from Robertson before Mathys Tel forced Teddy Sharman-Lowe into a save at his near post following a sensational run that saw him skip past three Chelsea defenders.

However, Spurs were reduced to 10 men four minutes after the restart when half-time substitute Danso failed to control Archie Gray's pass before hauling down Joao Pedro with a last-man foul, but Cole Palmer sent the resulting free-kick just wide.

Antonin Kinsky then came to his team's rescue twice in quick succession, first producing an excellent stop to push Estevao's deflected effort onto the crossbar and following that up with a point-blank save to deny Joao Pedro after Robertson's attempt to chest the ball back to his goalkeeper.

Spurs almost won it six minutes from time when Rio Kyerematen struck the crossbar following a driving run from deep, with the game appearing to be decided by penalties.

But Richarlison had other ideas. Jamie Donley's shot from the edge of the box struck the right post, with the Spurs number nine on hand to tuck home the rebound and deal Xabi Alonso his first defeat in charge of Chelsea.

Richarlison comes up trumps for 10-man Tottenham

Spurs needed penalties to battle their way past Sydney FC in their third match under De Zerbi, and it looked like they would need to show their nerve in a shoot-out once again until Richarlison popped up with the winner late on.

Richarlison finished as Spurs' top scorer in all competitions in 2025-26 with 12 goals, and he looks like to be the main contender to lead his team's attack this season after Dominic Solanke failed to make an impact from the start.

Despite only coming on at half-time, he managed more shots (one to zero), created more chances (one to zero) and had more touches (15 to nine) than Solanke, while Tonali also impressed and showed the first real glimpse of the quality Spurs have invested in.

Tonali recorded team-high totals for final third entries (seven), while only Ben Davies (74) completed more passes than the Italian's 53. Albeit helped by a deflection, Tonali's goal was well-taken and instantly endeared him to the Spurs faithful.

For Chelsea, there will be disappointment at not capitalising on their man advantage. They finished with an expected goals (xG) total of 1.88 from their 13 shots, only four of which were on target, compared to Spurs' tally of 1.26 from their seven attempts.

Here we go! Romano: Chelsea to sign Morgan Rogers for £117 million

Here we go! According to renowned journalist Romano, Chelsea have successfully hijacked and will sign Morgan Rogers for £117 million.

The Athletic's famous reporter David Ornstein first reported that Chelsea and Villa reached a verbal agreement for the £117 million signing of Morgan Rogers.

Journalist Romano then confirmed the deal with his signature "Here we go."

Romano stated: "Chelsea have reached a transfer agreement with Aston Villa today, completing the deal before Arsenal made an official offer.

As David Ornstein previously reported, Chelsea's bid of £117 million has been accepted by Aston Villa.

Chelsea have also agreed personal terms with Morgan Rogers, and the two sides will sign a contract until June 2032."

Gordon: Messi proved he's the goat; the World Cup will be won by someone who loves Barcelona

In today's FIFA World Cup semi-final, England lost 1-2 to Argentina. After the match, Gordon spoke about his views on the game in the mixed zone.

"It's the most heartbreaking way to lose a game," Gordon said. "You're minutes away from a FIFA World Cup final, you feel like you've done enough to win, and then you concede two goals at the last minute. It's too hard to accept."

"When you have someone like Messi on your team, everything becomes easier. He only needs a moment to change the game, and that's exactly what happened tonight. That's why he's considered the greatest player of all time."

"This will be his third FIFA World Cup final, and I don't think any other player has reached that many times. Hats off to his achievements, but from our perspective, it's a painful moment because we felt we were so close."

"I've watched Messi influence games at Barcelona for years, and today I realized he's even better than I thought. I'm disappointed about this elimination, but at least I know the FIFA World Cup will be won by someone who madly loves Barcelona."

England 1-2 Argentina: Enzo & Lautaro stage another late comeback as Messi assists twice

Lionel Messi once again led an Argentina comeback as they struck two late goals to beat England 2-1 and reach the World Cup final.

The world champions will have the chance to defend their title against Spain at New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday, with Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez getting the goals to overturn the lead Anthony Gordon had given England.

The match was gritty in the early stages, with a stop-start first half-hour eventually resulting in John Stones heading just wide from a Declan Rice free-kick.

At the other end, Fernandez's follow-up from a blocked Messi shot only just flew over the crossbar and had Jordan Pickford worried.

Argentina started the second half brightly, with Julian Alvarez getting the better of Djed Spence, but his near-post attempt was well blocked by Pickford before the striker's second effort was deflected into the side netting.

But it was England who got the opening goal with a lovely move that started deep. Lisandro Martinez acrobatically cleared, but only as far as Declan Rice, who picked out Morgan Rogers to swing in a delightful cross that was swept home by Gordon 55 minutes in.

Spence denied Giuliano Simeone a tight-angled attempt with a brilliant last-ditch tackle, while Pickford got down sharply to reflexively keep out Nico Gonzalez's glancing header as Argentina upped the pressure.

Alexis Mac Allister threw himself onto the end of Rodrigo De Paul's peach of a cross, but thumped his header off the inside of the left post, before Gonzalez nodded across the face of goal shortly after.

Fernandez remained a threat, and moments after seeing another drive tipped over by Pickford, he bent a superb finish around the crowd and into the far side of the net after being picked out by Messi with five minutes left of normal time.

Seven minutes later, Lautaro Martinez sent the Argentina fans into raptures. Mac Allister saw a low drive rebound off the post this time, and Messi recycled it on the right, lifting another wonderful cross into the box, and the Inter striker was unmarked to thump his header into the net to secure the victory.
