Did you know that there’s a different way to use MA and MA’AM in Standard English? Let me explain

In many African cultures, especially in Nigeria, ‘Ma’ is commonly used as a respectful way to address women of different ages.

However, in standard English, ‘Ma’am’ (Short form for Madam) is a formal way to refer to any lady/woman while ‘Ma’ is used to address our mothers, older women, senior citizens or mother figures.

Language is nuanced and as a result, in a cultural environment like Nigeria or Africa, it is okay to use ‘ma’ when addressing women who are not necessarily our mothers or mother figures; but it’s also important to understand standard usage so you can communicate confidently in global spaces.

In summary, standard English in an official setting

How do you use both pronouns correctly?

‘Each other’ is used when referring to two people or things.

For example-

We call each other every weekend ✅

On the other hand, ‘One another’ is often used when referring to more than two people.

For instance-

“I encourage members of my team to support one another”… (In this case, it is assumed that members of the team are more than two, definitely)

So, ‘each other’ for two people and ‘one another’ for more than two people.

As a Diction & Communication Coach, time and again, some of our clients in the diaspora tell me stories of how communication has been difficult for them at work; thereby negatively impacting their career progression, social interactions and even confidence. I remember a client in Canada telling me sometime back that after a while, she couldn’t ask questions or make contributions anymore at work because she kept getting the feedback “Could you please come again?” “I don’t understand you”. HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR NEXT MEDIA APPEARANCE, AS A PUBLIC FIGURE II

If you’re a celebrity- Musician, actor, content creator, etc and you’ve been scheduled for a media interview or podcast soon, welcome to Media Literacy 101…Here are three things you need to do to prepare:

1. Be clear about your message- Before you go in for that interview, ask yourself- What do I want to be remembered for? What’s the crux of my message? If you were able to get the interview questions prior, fantastic! You get to prepare ahead. But if the platform says it’s going to be an informal, casual chat, that’s also fine.

But please take note, not everything needs to be said. Define your key talking points even before you step out of your house- Your story, your current project, your next album, etc. Very important, make sure you’re in charge of your narrative, don’t be tempted to deviate from the subject matter because if you don’t control your message, the interviewer will.

2. Anticipate possible questions. Don’t just hope for easy questions, prepare for the difficult ones too. Think about what you might be asked- Personal opinions, trending topics, controversies, etc and decide in advance how you want to respond. This way, you’re not caught off guard. You’re composed, intentional and in control.

3. Always remember, it is not just what you say but how you say what you say. Your tone, your pace, clarity of speech, your carriage and projection of confidence all matter. Before your interview, record yourself answering possible questions, play back, listen again, refine your responses if need be. It’s important that you build camera confidence before you go on air because you need to sound convincing.
