Did you know that there’s a different way to use MA and MA’AM in Standard English? Let me explain
In many African cultures, especially in Nigeria, ‘Ma’ is commonly used as a respectful way to address women of different ages.
However, in standard English, ‘Ma’am’ (Short form for Madam) is a formal way to refer to any lady/woman while ‘Ma’ is used to address our mothers, older women, senior citizens or mother figures.
Language is nuanced and as a result, in a cultural environment like Nigeria or Africa, it is okay to use ‘ma’ when addressing women who are not necessarily our mothers or mother figures; but it’s also important to understand standard usage so you can communicate confidently in global spaces.
In summary, standard English in an official setting
