Osoba urges to encourage online institutions for better access to education

The newly Inaugurated Honourary Chancellor of College of Chaplaincy & Social Sciences, Nigeria, Reverend Mother (Dr) Osoba Kehinde Eritosin,JP has called on the Nigerian government to empower online education and grant license to more online educational institutions in bringing education to the door step of every Nigerian.

Osoba made the appeal while addressing the Press after her inauguration during the college’s sixth convocation ceremony on Thursday in Ota, Ogun State

The college, an affiliate of African American University, Porto-Novo, accredited by American Council of Training & Development, operates all its courses through online learning.

During the 2023/2024 academic session, the college graduated 55 students across Advanced Diploma, Bachelor’s, Master’s and Ph.D programmes.

Osoba, who also doubles as the new visitor of the institution, highlighted the global shift toward online education, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, which showed the feasibility and efficacy of online learning.

She emphasised that public and private institutions in Nigeria have increasingly been adopting online education model to suit the emerging realities of the world.

While expressing her gratitude and commitment to the college’s growth Osoba said; “I accept this responsibility as a demonstration of my dedication to the development of humanity,”

Osoba however promised to support the Governing Council towards the completion of ongoing projects and infrastructural developments at the college and in developing and implementing strategic action plan while fostering good rapport and consensus among relevant stakeholders of the institution.

Similarly, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof Faith Lana in his welcome address said “We appeal to the Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Education, to establish modalities with simpler requirements for more online institutions to gain approval,” said.

He also urged the government to empower newly approved institutions to be able to gradually roll out degree programmes, starting with a single programme and expanding over time.

“The country needs more institutions like MIVA Open University to address the challenges of educational accessibility,” he added.

The Vice Chancellor further stressed that approving new online institutions would significantly strengthen the nation’s educational system.

The event also featured the induction of the 55 graduates into the Alumni Association and the inauguration of Osoba as the college’s first Chancellor.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) had earlier reported that the convocation ceremony celebrated the college’s continued dedication to delivering quality online education and its contribution to expanding access to higher learning in Nigeria.

DEATH OF CLEOPATRA

The last ruler of Ptolemaic Egypt, died on either 10 or 12 August, 30 BC, in Alexandria, when she was 39 years old. According to popular belief, Cleopatra killed herself by allowing an asp (Egyptian cobra) to bite her, but according to the Roman-era writers Strabo, Plutarch, and Cassius Dio, Cleopatra poisoned herself using either a toxic ointment or by introducing the poison with a sharp implement such as a hairpin. Modern scholars debate the validity of ancient reports involving snakebites as the cause of death and whether she was murdered. Some academics hypothesize that her Roman political rival Octavian forced her to kill herself in a manner of her choosing. The location of Cleopatra's tomb is unknown. It was recorded that Octavian allowed for her and her husband, the Roman politician and general Mark Antony, who stabbed himself with a sword, to be buried together properly.

Cleopatra's death effectively ended the final war of the Roman Republic between the remaining triumvirs Octavian and Antony, in which Cleopatra aligned herself with Antony, father to three of her children. Antony and Cleopatra fled to Egypt following their loss at the 31 BC Battle of Actium in Roman Greece, after which Octavian invaded Egypt and defeated their forces. Committing su***de allowed her to avoid the humiliation of being paraded as a prisoner in a Roman triumph celebrating the military victories of Octavian, who would become Rome's first emperor in 27 BC and be known as Augustus. Octavian had Cleopatra's son Caesarion (also known as Ptolemy XV), rival heir of Julius Caesar, killed in Egypt but spared her children with Antony and brought them to Rome. Cleopatra's death marked the end of the Hellenistic period and Ptolemaic rule of Egypt, as well as the beginning of Roman Egypt, which became a province of the Roman Empire.

The death of Cleopatra has been depicted in various works of art throughout history. These include the visual, literary, and performance arts, ranging from sculptures and paintings to poetry and plays, as well as modern films. Cleopatra featured prominently in the prose and poetry of ancient Latin literature. While surviving ancient Roman depictions of her death in visual arts are rare, Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, and Modern works are numerous. Ancient Greco-Roman sculptures such as the Esquiline Venus and Sleeping Ariadne served as inspirations for later artworks portraying her death, universally involving the snakebite of an asp. Cleopatra's death has evoked themes of eroticism and sexuality in works that include paintings, plays, and films, especially from the Victorian era. Modern works depicting Cleopatra's death include Neoclassical sculpture, Orientalist painting, and cinema.

Edo Governor Declares War On Market Cartels, Suspends Unions And Sends Police After Defaulters

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has suspended all Market Unions and Associations in Edo State with immediate effect.

The Governor has also ordered the Police and other security agencies in the State to arrest defaulting leaders of the various suspended Unions and Associations without any delay.

The decision of the Governor was contained in a communication notice issued by the Secretary to State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, and dated 19th November 2024.

The Governor said the decision was informed by the disturbing activities of market Unions in the State.

He said reports abound that the Executives of the Unions and Associations either out rightly prevent farmers from disposing off their wares directly to consumers at the markets or arbitrarily fix prices of staple food at the detriment of the low income earners in the State.

The statement read: “The attention of the State Government has been drawn to the disturbing activities of market Unions in the State. Reports abound that the Executives of these Unions either out rightly prevent farmers from disposing off their wares directly to consumers at the markets or arbitrarily fix prices of these staple food at the detriment of the low income earners and generally, the citizens of the State.

“Their actions have ultimately led to an astronomical rise in the prices of staple food in the State, thereby making life unbearable for the common Edo man.

“Edo State Government views this action with serious concern and considers it extortionist in nature which should not be allowed to thrive.

“While Edo State Government appreciates the role of market traders and their contribution to the economy of our dear State, it will not however serve as justification to allow a few individuals under the guise of Market Unions Executives and for their selfish reasons, continue to hold the entire State to ransom through their selfish and extortionist activities.

“Following from the foregoing, the Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo has approved the suspension of the activities of all Market Unions in Edo State with immediate effect.

“Security Agents have been put on alert, and any person or group who decides to flout this directive would be held accountable.”

THE PETROLEUM PRICE DEBATE: A CALL FOR PATIENCE WITH PRESIDENT TINUBU

By Pius Ade Babaleye Pab

Recent debates about the rising price of petroleum in Nigeria have stirred emotions across the country, with many pointing fingers at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. However, it is crucial to put things into perspective, especially considering former President Olusegun Obasanjo's recent revelation about the challenges facing Nigerian refineries.

In his statement, Obasanjo highlighted reasons why Shell avoided Nigerian refineries during his tenure. This candid admission underscores the deep-rooted issues within the country's oil and gas sector—issues that span decades and multiple administrations. These structural problems cannot be fixed overnight, yet some critics expect President Tinubu to achieve miracles within a year.

Let us not forget:

Obasanjo had eight years to address these challenges but couldn’t resolve them.

Yar’Adua and Jonathan also had eight years combined to tackle the sector's inefficiencies.

Buhari, despite being a former petroleum minister, could not overhaul the system during his eight-year tenure.

Yet, many expect Tinubu to solve these entrenched problems in just one year. This is not only unrealistic but also unfair to a leader who has shown visionary leadership and a commitment to change.

President Tinubu’s bold steps in removing subsidies and pushing for reforms demonstrate his willingness to tackle the root causes of the problem. These actions may cause temporary discomfort, but they lay the groundwork for sustainable growth in the long run. It is worth noting that such tough decisions are hallmarks of true leadership. Tinubu is not just a doer; he is a record-breaker and a leader par excellence.

As Nigerians, we must recognize that nation-building requires patience, sacrifice, and collective effort. The oil sector’s problems, as exposed by Obasanjo, are complex and systemic. Addressing them demands time, resources, and the full support of the people.

Instead of casting blame, let us rally behind President Tinubu. His administration is working tirelessly to fix what past governments left undone. With unity and perseverance, Nigeria can overcome these challenges and achieve greatness.

May God continue to bless Nigeria. Amen.
