ABUJA, NIGERIA — Oluwadamilola Oreofe Adeolu, a member of Team Nigeria's Gold Award-winning team at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup in Shanghai, China, has been awarded a five-year scholarship valued at ₦2.5 million, alongside a brand-new laptop and full sponsorship to acquire a digital skill of her choice.
The life-changing announcement was made during a special X Space hosted by Bamidele Martins Akilaiya, Founder of Lumina Minds Academic Services Ltd and Convener of Spellionaire™, to celebrate Team Nigeria's historic achievement at the World Cup and discuss the future of spelling bee competitions in Nigeria.
The education support package was announced by Dr. Ayilola Ayotomiwa, a UK-based Nigerian medical doctor, researcher, ECFMG-certified physician, philanthropist, and founder, popularly known as "Ayilola of Nigeria" or "The Laptop Guy." Based in Manchester, England, Dr. Ayotomiwa is widely recognised for his commitment to youth empowerment through the 10K Laptops Project (Tech Access Project), an initiative that provides Nigerian youths with laptops and sponsorship to acquire in-demand digital skills such as data analysis and cybersecurity.
As part of his support for the young spelling champion, Dr. Ayotomiwa pledged ₦500,000 annually for five years, bringing the total scholarship value to ₦2.5 million, beginning in October 2026. He also announced the donation of a brand-new laptop and full sponsorship for Oluwadamilola to learn any digital skill of her choice, equipping her with the tools needed to thrive in today's digital economy.
The announcement drew applause from the more than 100 participants who joined the X Space, including educators, parents, spelling bee enthusiasts, and supporters of education from within and outside Nigeria.
The event also featured Chinedu Great Okediachi, another member of Team Nigeria's Gold Award-winning team, who reflected on the team's remarkable journey to becoming world champions.
Also present was Oreoluwa Alayande, the MTN Spelling Bee Champion 2025, who shared her spelling bee journey, the lessons she has learnt, and her aspirations for the future.
Award-winning spelling bee coach Gbenga Julius also contributed to the discussion, highlighting the importance of identifying young talents early, providing quality mentorship, and creating the right environment for children to excel on the global stage.
Speaking during the event, Bamidele Martins Akilaiya, Founder of Lumina Minds Academic Services Ltd and Convener of Spellionaire™, reiterated the urgent need for greater investment in academically gifted children through the Spellionaire™ 1000 Children Initiative, which seeks to ensure that no brilliant child is denied an opportunity because of financial constraints.
He noted that many exceptionally talented students miss opportunities to participate in academic competitions simply because they cannot afford registration fees or lack the support needed to pursue academic excellence.
Participants described Dr. Ayotomiwa's intervention as the defining moment of the event, applauding his generosity and unwavering commitment to expanding educational and technological opportunities for young Nigerians.
The X Space concluded with a renewed call for individuals, corporate organisations, foundations, NGOs, and government agencies to collaborate in identifying, nurturing, and empowering the next generation of Nigerian leaders through education.
The full X Space conversation is available on replay, offering listeners an opportunity to hear directly from the young champions, education stakeholders, and guests who continue to champion academic excellence in Nigeria.
