DIRECTING FOR A 21ST CENTURY THEATRE AUDIENCE IN NIGERIA 🇳🇬
The 21st century theatre audience are impatient! Theatre goers today are full of the Millenials and generation Z audience(s) with higher hunger threshold for entertainment .These audience extractions are too impatient to spend their time and money on any form of entertainment that lacks a bite. In several climes, theatre producers and directors have become conscious of this. The return of the Cinema in Nigeria, the break of streaming platforms, and the surge of quick content across social spaces have largely shaped, if not worsened the reception of Theatre productions in Nigeria. While theatre may not at anytime compete with TV/films , Theater makers should leverage on the fleeting moments of theatre Which other mediums may not provide .Theatre directors in Nigeria irrespective of what they wish to achieve should therefore have no business with Dilly-dallies when they have the opportunity to make a mark on the ever vaporizing theatre audience in Nigeria. Choice of Play-script matters a lot if theatre must bring back and sustain its audience. Many Wordy and philosophical plays are by preset, slow and draggy if boring is not the word! Should any director choose a wordy/non-dramatic playtext (script), it behoves on such director to therefore spice up such a play by injecting equal dramatic actions, pace and relevant dramatic techniques .
Apart from sharing the live space, there must be 'something unique' and magical about theatre that should get people out of their comfort, out of the Cinemas and away from their mobile screens! The theatre director has this magic! -Austine Lordlaz
