Mummification

Ancient Egyptians believed in an afterlife when someone died. Mummification helped someone reach the afterlife as they believed that an afterlife could only exist if there was a form the soul could repossess after death.

Egyptians believed that the only way to do this was if the body was recognisable.

This is why they spent so long on the process of mummification and why Pharaohs began the building of their tombs during their lifetimes.

A Visit To The Omo Valley.

The Omo River in the south of Ethiopia is very remote. For thousands of years, various people from different cultures have lived here, with notable body decorations. You can meet the famous Mursi with their lip plates, but also the Suri, Me'en, Konso, Tsemay, Ari, Dizi, Bana, Hamer, Karo, Bumi and Dassaetch.

Nowadays, most of these people are nomadic or semi-nomadic. They travel through the savannahs and forests with their herds. They differ in traditional household habits, in hunting and agricultural techniques and in the manner in which they make appliances and jewellery.

What youโ€™re seeing is the Sibhaca, a traditional warrior dance of the Swazi people in Eswatini, the small but proud kingdom nestled between South Africa and Mozambique. Donโ€™t let the vibrant colors mislead you, it isnโ€™t Congo. The rhythms, the flags, the energy, everything here is distinctly Eswatini.

Until 2018, the country was officially known as Swaziland. It was King Mswati III who restored the name Eswatini, meaning โ€œland of the Swazisโ€ in siSwati. Same nation, renewed name, enduring culture.

The Swazis belong to the Nguni family of Bantu peoples, alongside the Zulu, Xhosa, and Ndebele, sharing deep language roots and warrior traditions. Yet the Sibhaca is uniquely Swazi, marked by its own steps, its own rhythms, and its own ceremonial power.

More than just a dance, Sibhaca is history in motion, a symbol of pride and identity. It lives on in royal ceremonies, national celebrations, and festivals, binding the Swazi people to their monarchy, their heritage, and their land.
