EFCC Arrests Former Plateau State Speaker, 14 others for Alleged Money Laundering

Operatives of the Makurdi Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Tuesday June 17, 2025 arrested a former Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Mr. Moses Thomas Sule and 14 other members for alleged money laundering.

The 14 members are: Gwottson Fom, Sani Abubakar, Jwe Philip Gwom, Thomas Dantong, Happiness Mathew Akawu, Cornelius Dotyok and Agbalak Ibrahim.

Other members are: Danjuma Azi, Fwangje Bala Ndat, Salome Tanimu Wanglet, Namba Rimuyat, Nimchak Rims, Ishaku Maren and Paul Datugun.

The former legislators were arrested following claims by some concerned citizens of the state against them for allegedly violating the Money Laundering( Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022 and abuse of procurement processes.

Investigation showed that the former legislators spent only six months in office and the state government bought several luxury vehicles for them in their official capacities.

Investigation further showed that the said vehicles are valued at N2.5 billion. Upon leaving office, the vehicles were meant to be returned to the state government but were taken away by the legislators and all efforts to retrieve them have proved abortive. The state government had to procure another set of vehicles for the present members of the House of Assembly valued at about N2 billion.

The former Speaker and other members will soon be charged to court.

18-year-old Brandon Moss, a recent graduate of Ramsay High School in Birmingham, Alabama, is officially running for mayor of Fairfield, a small city with just over 9,500 residents.
With the current mayor, Eddie Penny, stepping down and not seeking re-election, Moss saw an opportunity to bring fresh energy and new ideas to his hometown. Despite his young age, Moss has already gained experience working closely with public figures and serving as the executive assistant to the superintendent of Birmingham City Schools.
He's made it clear that his campaign is about addressing real issues such as urban blight, the city's financial struggles, and much-needed improvements to infrastructure.
He emphasizes that age should not be a barrier to leadership and that young people deserve a seat at the table when it comes to shaping their communities.
His candidacy has gained widespread attention, not just for its novelty, but because it signals a growing movement of youth stepping up to lead. With the election scheduled for August 26, 2025, Moss is campaigning on a message of hope, action, and a desire to revitalize Fairfield through responsible leadership and civic engagement.

This is a big lesson for young people in Nigeria.

PROTEST TODAY BY THE DISENGAGED WORKERS OF PLATEAU STATE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION GINDIRI AND PLATEAU STATE POLYTECHNIC BARKIN-LADI.

12TH JUNE, 2025.

We, the affected workers of Plateau State College of Education Gindiri and Plateau State Polytechnic Barkin-Ladi, write with heavy hearts to express our deep concern and disappointment over the recent actions taken against us by the Plateau State Government under the leadership of His Excellency, Governor Caleb Mutfwang. Upon assumption of office, the Governor directed the termination of our appointments despite our lawful recruitment into various tertiary institutions across the state.

Following the unjust dismissal, we sought redress through legal means, and the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, in its landmark judgment, ruled in our favour. The court unequivocally ordered our immediate reinstatement, affirming the illegality of our disengagement and the validity of our employment. In line with this ruling, we returned to our places of work with renewed hope, only to be met with further disappointment.

Shockingly, upon resumption, we were issued fresh disengagement letters allegedly on the directive of the various Governing Councils of our institutions; councils that are appointees of the Governor himself. This development has not only undermined the rule of law and due process but has also deepened our agony and uncertainty. It raises critical questions about the sincerity of government in upholding justice and protecting the rights of its citizens, especially its youth.

We are particularly disturbed by the recent unguarded and derogatory remarks allegedly made by the Governor, referring to graduates as β€œdumb.” Such statements are demeaning and highly unbecoming of a leader. Many of us are proud graduates of reputable institutions such as the University of Jos, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi, and Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, the same university the Governor himself attended. It is therefore inappropriate and offensive to label us as β€œDolaye” or any other derogatory term.

Our disengagement appears to follow a worrying pattern that suggests a divide among the people of Plateau State. We are beginning to feel like second-class citizens in our own land, rejected, marginalized, and denied the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the development of our state. This action has stripped us of our dignity and taken away our only means of livelihood.

We call on all leaders of goodwill, civil society organizations, religious and traditional institutions, and all citizens of conscience to rise and speak out against this injustice. Plateau belongs to all of us, and no citizen should be made to feel unwanted or less important. We ask for nothing more than the right to earn a living and to serve our state with the skills and qualifications we have legitimately acquired.

In conclusion, we strongly urge His Excellency, Governor Caleb Mutfwang, to reconsider and rescind this unfortunate decision. Let the rule of law prevail. Let justice be done. We ask to be reinstated in accordance with the court ruling. We plead not just for ourselves, but for the soul of justice and equity in Plateau State.

Signed:
All Disengaged Workers of COE Gindiri and PlaPoly.

FROM A CONCERN CITZEN OF PLATEAU STATE

The argument is very simple. The penalty for going to court and not going to court should be the same since all the Employees were products of the same alleged flawed recruitment process. We cannot bring the argument of sidelining ad-hoc staff to permanent the employment of DOLAYE and unqualified persons on the side of aggrieved persons that went to court and turn around to jettison that reasoning and order that all those that did not go to court should be reabsorbed. I believe we also have DOLAYE and unqualified persons among those that refused to seek for redress in court. Their refusal to seek for redress in court should not whitewash their qualification and DOLAYE status. They are still DOLAYE.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang should evaluate this decision. It was not taken in consideration and conformity with the ideals of our democracy which is way beyond party politics.

What is good for the goose is good for the gander.

"Ghana Must Go": The 1983 Mass Expulsion from Nigeria

In 1983, under the administration of President Shehu Shagari, the Nigerian government issued a sweeping executive order requiring all immigrants without valid documents to leave the country. This led to the mass deportation of over two million West African migrants, the majority of whom were Ghanaians.

Thousands of these displaced people arrived at the Aflao border, the main entry point into Ghana from Nigeria, carrying their belongings in large, checkered bags that later came to be known as β€œGhana Must Go” bags.

The policy sparked diplomatic tensions and remains one of the most iconic migration episodes in West African history β€” symbolizing the fragile relationship between economic hardship, nationalism, and regional migration.

CONCERN ON APPOINTMENT OF 188 AIDES BY THE EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN OF LANGTANG SOUTH LGA

I’m deeply concerned about the recent appointment of 188 Special Assistants by the Local Government Chairman of Langtang South LGA, following in the path of his Langtang North LGA. This is on top of others previously appointed. Such moves are not just wasteful they undermine the very essence of good governance.

How can we expect to build strong systems and improve lives when public funds are diverted to pay for shallow appointments that serve no clear purpose other than rewarding party loyalists?

Governance should be about strategic investments in critical sectors like education, healthcare, infrastructure, and security not about inflating payrolls with unnecessary positions.

At this point, we must demand accountability, especially at the subnational levels and I still hold on to my believe that true progress comes from building capacity, empowering people, and prioritizing sustainable development over political patronage.

If we must move forward as Nigerians, then we need to rethink how we govern and stop the meaningless appointments that drain our resources and stall our growth.

Nankpak Cirfat.
