Confusion as APC Disowns Plateau Reps Results, Declares Gagdi Winner

Confusion has trailed the All Progressives Congress [APC] primary election for the Pankshin/Kanke/Kanam [PKK] Federal Constituency after the party’s Plateau State Primaries Electoral Committee dismissed an earlier result and declared incumbent lawmaker Yusuf Gagdi as the winner.

The Chairman of the committee, Stella Okotete, on Monday in Jos said the first announcement was unauthorized and had no validity.

Okotete, dismissed earlier results announced in the Pankshin/Kanke/Kanam (PKK) House of Representatives primary election, describing them as unauthorized

She clarified that only the officially appointed returning officer had the power to declare the outcome.

"The only the officially appointed returning officer, Nandom Andrew Kura, has the constitutional authority to declare the results of the primary election,” she said.

She added that “any prior announcements made outside this mandate were invalid and should be disregarded.”

Following the clarification, the recognized returning officer acted immediately. “Following the clarification, Kura, who served as the duly recognized returning officer, officially declared Yusuf Gagdi as the winner of the APC primary election for the PKK federal constituency, held on Saturday,” the committee announced.

Gagdi, speaking after the declaration, maintained that the process was credible and conducted across all wards in the constituency.

“Addressing journalists after the declaration, Gagdi insisted that the process was duly conducted across all 36 electoral wards, with evidence including accreditation records, videos, and photographs to support the credibility of the exercise,” he told reporters.

He rejected claims of multiple results, saying he was only aware of two announcements. “He dismissed claims of multiple results, stating that he was only aware of two announcements, one of which has now been confirmed as illegitimate,” Gagdi said.

Uncertainty, violence mar APC primaries for Jos South/Jos East Federal Constituency and PKK

The All Progressives Congress primaries for Jos South/Jos East Federal Constituency and that of Pankshin/Kanke/Kanam [PKK] Federal Constituency have been marked by disputes, allegations of violence, and conflicting claims over results.

In Jos South LGA, party members said there has been a “gentleman arrangement” between districts to rotate the Jos South/Jos East Federal Constituency seat.

It was reliably gathered that the seat is supposed to go to Gyel this time but there is an attempt to thwart it and it is being resisted

Reports also indicated that “in some places in Jos South, there was violence” during the voting process which has given rise to the postponement of the process in Du.

In PKK, tensions are high over the bid of incumbent Rep. Yusuf Gagdi to seek a third term.

“Yusuf Gagdi has done two terms and usually, they rotate the seat between Pankshin and Kanam but an attempt to go for the third time is causing serious agitation by the people,” the source said.

The situation has been compounded by multiple claims of victory.

“In PKK, many candidates are brandishing different results claiming victory for their candidates,” the source added.

The primaries in both constituencies have produced separate results at ward level. In Zawan A Ward, Jos South LGA, Esther Bitrus was declared top with 316 votes, ahead of Dachung Musa Bagos with 130 votes and Ajiji with 2 votes. At RCM Primary School, Zarmaganda, the declaration of Hon. Esther Dung as winner led to a standoff, with supporters of Baggos calling for a recount and a suspected thug later disrupting the process.

With conflicting accounts and incidents reported across wards, party members say they are waiting for the APC to release official results.

Given the situation, the people are awaiting official results from the APC to clarify the outcome of the primaries in Jos South/Jos East and PKK.
