The bitter truth many Christians find hard to believe is that there are more Muslims in Nigeria than Christians. The Muslim population in Nigeria keeps growing at a faster rate than the Christian population due to early marriages, the widespread practice of polygamous marriages among Muslims, and other related cultural and religious factors.
Whenever Christians are told that Muslims are more in number in Nigeria, it sounds provoking and unacceptable to them. However, the reality remains the same whether they agree with it or not. Even though there is no single, officially accepted statistical data that clearly proves Muslims are far outnumbering Christians in Nigeria, practical observations and real-life instances across the country strongly suggest this fact.
Below are clear reasons that support this reality:
1. Early Marriages Among Muslims
Early marriage is more common among Muslims in many parts of Nigeria, especially in the Northern regions. This gives Muslims a higher chance of giving birth to more children over a longer period of time. When people marry early, they naturally have more childbearing years, which leads to larger families.
Christians, on the other hand, often marry later due to education, career pursuits, and church doctrines. As a result, Christian families tend to have fewer children. Over time, this difference in family size contributes significantly to population growth, giving Muslims a clear numerical advantage.
2. Practice of Polygamous Marriages Among Muslims
The practice of polygamy among Muslims is another major factor contributing to their rapid population growth. Islam permits a man to marry more than one wife, which naturally increases the number of children in Muslim households.
Christians are restricted to one man and one wife, which drastically slows population growth—not only in Nigeria but worldwide. In addition, many Christian re
