The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Monday unveiled the Payments System Vision 2028 (PSV 2028) to strengthen the country’s digital economy and trade.

Speaking in Abuja, CBN Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, said PSV 2028 aimed to deepen financial inclusion and strengthen digital payments nationwide.

Nigerian banks significantly ramped up lending to the federal government over the past year, with credit to the public sector jumping by N15.66 trillion, raising fresh concerns about the shrinking space available for private sector financing in Africa’s largest economy.

According to data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), credit extended to the Nigerian government rose sharply from N23.93 trillion in April 2025 to N39.60 trillion in April 2026, representing a year-on-year increase of 65.44 percent. The surge placed government borrowing as the dominant driver of overall domestic credit growth during the period.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) says it has recorded N481 billion Profit After Tax (PAT) for April 2026.

The development represented a sharp jump from the N276 billion posted in March, the company said in the April Monthly Report Summary, released on its X handle.

The company said its crude oil and condensate production rose to 1.68 million barrels per day (mmbopd) in April, representing a 7.69 percent increase from the March production level.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) says the average price of 5kg of cooking gas increased from N7,655.73 recorded in March to N8,706.93 in April.

The NBS said in its Cooking Gas Price Watch for April released in Abuja, that the April price represented a 13.73 percent increase compared to what was obtained in March.

The report said that the average price of 5kg of cooking gas increased on a year-on-year basis by 10.42 percent from N7,855.60 recorded in April 2025.

It also said that the average retail price for refilling a 12.5kg cooking gas cylinder increased by 13.89 percent on a month-on-month basis from N19,652.83 in March 2026 to N22,382.20 in April 2026.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) says the average retail price of a litre of petrol witnessed an increase from N1,288.54 in March to N1,532.93 in April.

The NBS made this known in its Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol) Price Watch for April released in Abuja.

It said that the April price of N1,532.93 represented an 18.97 percent increase over the price of N1,288.54 recorded in March...
