The Trump administration is reportedly weighing a ban on pregnant foreign women entering the U.S., after the Supreme Court overturned his bid to end birthright citizenship.

The move targets what officials call “birth tourism,” the practice of traveling to the U.S. late in pregnancy to secure U.S. citizenship for a newborn.

Senior White House adviser Stephen Miller said the administration will take “a hard look” at barring heavily pregnant visitors. “You have to now think very carefully about who you let into your country, even on a temporary basis because of the possibility for birth tourism,” he said. Miller argued that such births create a child who is a U.S. citizen for life and eligible for government benefits.

White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said President Trump is “totally committed to protecting the value of natural-born American citizenship” and has urged Congress to act quickly. She added that the Justice Department will focus on investigating birth tourism operations.

Homeland Security chief Markwayne Mullin also supported possible restrictions, saying some women arrive in the final weeks of pregnancy to give birth before leaving. He claimed the practice could raise national security issues.

The renewed effort comes after the Supreme Court on Tuesday struck down Trump’s Day One executive order that sought to deny automatic citizenship to children born in the U.S. to undocumented or temporary-visa parents.
