SENATOR NATASHA AKPOTI-UDUAGHAN APPEALS A JUDGMENT SHE LOST WHILE ATTEMPTING TO ENFORCE A NON-EXISTENT ORDER OF RECALL

I consider it a duty to draw the attention of the general public to the ongoing legal developments surrounding the judgment delivered by Hon. Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on July 4, 2025, in the case instituted by the suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Contrary to misleading public narratives, it is imperative to clarify that Senator Natasha lost all the reliefs she sought before the court. Specifically, the Federal High Court dismissed the following claims made by her:

1. Her challenge to the Senate’s decision to invite her to appear before the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions;

2. Her objection to the reassignment of her seat in the Senate chamber; and

3. Her claim in seeking to speak from an unauthorised seat on the Senate floor. In dismissing this claim, the court held that she was in breach of the Senate Standing Orders when she attempted to invoke Order 10 (which is an order of privilege), whereas she had violated Order 6(1) and (2) by refusing to speak from her newly assigned seat. This conduct was rightly held to be unparliamentary.

4. Her argument that she cannot be disciplined by the Senate.

All of these claims were resolved against her. Most importantly, no positive or mandatory orders were issued by the court for her recall to the Senate.

Despite this judicial defeat, Senator Natasha was seen celebrating with her supporters, falsely suggesting that the court had ordered her recall. When the reality of the judgment became clear, she filed a Notice of Appeal against aspects of the decision she found unfavourable, particularly the direct orders of the court that found her guilty of contempt and imposed specific sanctions. The court ordered her to:

Pay the sum of ₦5 million to the Federal Government;

Pull down from her page a satirical and mocking post purporting to be an "apology"; and

Publish a sincere apology in two national newspapers and on her page.

To date, she has not complied with any of these clear and unequivocal orders. Instead, she now seeks to return to the Senate under the guise of enforcing a non-existent court order, falsely claiming that the obiter dicta of the Honourable Judge, mere judicial observations, constitute binding and enforceable directives. This distortion is legally flawed and grossly misrepresents the true state of the law and the facts.

Even more troubling is the emerging pattern of converting serious judicial proceedings into social media content, prioritizing optics over substance and trivializing the gravity of legal accountability.

In response to this self-induced legal confusion, a cross-appeal and an interlocutory application have been filed. These are aimed at preserving the dignity and independence of the Senate and preventing any disruptive consequences arising from the deliberate mischaracterisation of the court’s decision.

It must be emphasised that this cross-appeal is not political. It is a constitutional safeguard, filed to affirm that Justice Nyako’s remarks suggesting a review of Senate Standing Orders or the recall of the Senator were merely advisory opinions (obiter dicta). They were not binding judicial orders, as they did not emanate from any of the reliefs sought by the Plaintiff and cannot, in law, be enforced.

The public is hereby reminded that the Nigerian Senate remains committed to order, decorum, and the rule of law. It will not be railroaded or destabilised by media stunts or sensationalist narratives. Governance must proceed with focus and seriousness, unmarred by distractions.

The Senate remains firmly focused on its legislative responsibilities and wholly supports President Bola Tinubu’s administration in its commitment to democratic governance and national development.

Former Governor Yahaya Bello Mourns the Passing of the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona

His Excellency, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, CON, former Governor of Kogi State, has expressed grief over the passing of the Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, GCON, who joined his ancestors on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91.

Governor Bello described the late Awujale as a revered monarch whose remarkable 65-year reign brought enviable progress to Ijebu Ode and the entire Ijebuland.

The former governor also noted that the late Awujale, who introduced and popularised the annual Ojude Oba festival, was an iconic national figure.

"Oba Adetona ascended the throne in 1960, the same year Nigeria gained Independence, making his 65-year reign a parallel lens into our nationhood.

"He was an internationally respected monarch, symbol of unity, cultural preservation and advancement," he stated.

Governor Bello extended heartfelt condolences to the royal family of Ijebuland, the Government and people of Ogun State and the nation as a whole, noting that, with his royal majesty's age and accomplishments, the sad event would be best described as a celebration of life well-lived.

He therefore prayed the Almighty God to grant the soul of the late Awujale eternal rest and give all who mourn the revered monarch the fortitude to bear the great loss.

The former Governor also called for divine guidance to the ancient Ijebu Kingdom through the period of succession.

Former Governor Yahaya Bello Mourns President Muhammadu Buhari, Describes Him as an ‘Indisputably Upright Leader’

The immediate past Governor of Kogi State, His Excellency, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, CON, has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, describing it as a national tragedy and an immense loss to Nigeria and the African continent.

The former Governor noted that President Buhari, who passed on at the age of 82, was not only a towering figure in Nigerian history but also a father figure in leadership and political mentor to him throughout his time in office.

“The passing of Baba Buhari is a deep personal loss to me. He was a father, a guide and a mentor whose leadership shaped my own philosophy of governance.

He extended heartfelt condolences to the Buhari family, the Government and people of Katsina State, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, remarking that ‘the nation mourns a man whose life was marked by simplicity, honour and a profound sense of duty to the country he served with distinction.’

Bello described President Buhari as an indisputably upright leader whose transformative legacies, both as a military Head of State and later as a democratically elected President, will resonate through generations.

He further noted that President Buhari’s passing comes at a time when Nigeria still needed his wise counsel, measured voice and reassuring presence amid national and global uncertainties. ‘Nigeria has lost a rare gem and a leader who embodied selflessness, discipline and unmatched patriotism’, Bello said.

While praying for the peaceful repose of his soul, the former Governor called on all Nigerians, irrespective of political, ethnic, or religious affiliation, to honour Muhammadu Buhari’s memory by embracing lives of purpose, sacrifice, and integrity.

‘I take solace in the fact that Baba lived a fulfilled life of honour and service. His was a life that taught us that true leadership lies not in loud proclamations but in quiet, consistent actions - not in personal wealth but in selfless sacrifice.

‘May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus,’ Bello stated.

STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT BOLA AHMED TINUBU ON THE PASSING OF FORMER PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI, GCFR

It is with profound sorrow and a heavy heart that I received the news of the passing of His Excellency, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd), GCFR, my predecessor, who departed this life today, Sunday, July 13, 2025, at a hospital in the United Kingdom.

President Buhari was to the very core, a patriot, a soldier, a statesman. His legacy of service and sacrifice endures. He served Nigeria with unwavering dedication, first as a military leader from January 1984 to August 1985, and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023. Duty, honour, and a deep commitment to the unity and progress of our nation defined his life.

He stood firm through the most turbulent times, leading with quiet strength, profound integrity, and an unshakable belief in Nigeria’s potential. He championed discipline in public service, confronted corruption head-on, and placed the country above personal interest at every turn.

In this moment of national mourning, I extend my deepest condolences to his beloved wife, Aisha, with whom I have been in constant touch, his children, the entire Buhari family, and all who knew and loved him.

I also extend my condolences to the government and people of Katsina State, most especially the people and traditional leaders of Daura Emirate.

We honour his service. We reflect on his legacy. And we pray for the peaceful repose of his soul.

As a mark of respect to our former leader, I have directed that all national flags fly at half-staff across the country for seven days from today.

I have also summoned an emergency Federal Executive Council session on Tuesday, dedicated to his honour.

The Federal Government will accord President Buhari full state honours befitting his towering contributions to our country.

May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus.

And may his life continue to inspire generations of Nigerians to serve with courage, conviction, and selflessness.
