Gov Ododo Commissions Violent Crime Response Unit, Reaffirms Commitment to Security in Kogi

By Abah Benjamin Eneojoh

Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has reaffirmed his administration's unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property with the commissioning of a fully equipped Police Force Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) in Lokoja.

The state-of-the-art facility, inaugurated on Thursday June 4, 2026 is part of the government's sustained efforts to strengthen the security architecture of the state and enhance the operational capacity of law enforcement agencies in tackling violent crimes.

Represented by his Deputy, Comrade Joel Salifu, Governor Ododo said security remains at the heart of his administration's development agenda, stressing that meaningful growth and economic prosperity can only thrive in an atmosphere of peace and safety.
According to the Governor, the Violent Crime Response Unit has over the years demonstrated remarkable effectiveness in combating criminal activities across the state despite operating from a shared facility. He noted that the increasing scope of the Unit's responsibilities necessitated the construction of a modern operational headquarters to support its expanding mandate.
"The safety of our people remains non-negotiable. This facility is a testament to our resolve to provide our security agencies with the tools and environment they require to effectively discharge their duties," he stated.

Governor Ododo disclosed that the facility, fully funded by the Kogi State Government, comprises ten offices, detention cells, a conference room, a control room and an uninterrupted power supply system designed to guarantee seamless operations.

In addition to the new facility, the Governor announced the provision of four Toyota Hilux operational vehicles, one Bullet-Proof Buffalo Armoured Personnel Carrier and three Toyota Sienna vehicles to further strengthen the Unit's rapid response and crime-fighting capabilities.

He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his unwavering support for security agencies and his commitment to strengthening national security, noting that the President's leadership has continued to yield positive outcomes in the country's security landscape.

Governor Ododo also reiterated his administration's commitment to supporting the Nigeria Police Force in line with the policing vision of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu. He revealed that the state government has consistently invested in security through the provision of operational vehicles, communication gadgets, renovation of police formations, repair of Armoured Personnel Carriers, refurbishment of patrol vans and welfare support for security personnel.

Charging officers of the VCRU to remain professional, disciplined and courageous in the discharge of their duties, the Governor assured the Nigeria Police Force of continued collaboration and support from the state government.
He expressed confidence that the newly commissioned facility and operational assets would significantly improve the Unit's ability to prevent crime, respond swiftly to emergencies and sustain the state's reputation as one of the safest in the country.

Earlier, the Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, described the inauguration as a landmark achievement in the state's collective efforts to combat crime and maintain public safety.
The Police Commissioner explained that the VCRU was established under the reform-oriented policing agenda of the Inspector-General of Police to tackle emerging security threats such as kidnapping, banditry, highway robberies and other violent crimes through intelligence-driven operations and rapid response strategies.

He disclosed that personnel deployed to the Unit underwent rigorous screening and professional assessments to ensure only highly competent, disciplined and dedicated officers were selected.
CP Kankarofi expressed profound appreciation to Governor Ododo for his exceptional support to security agencies, particularly for providing the facility, logistics and operational resources that made the full take-off of the Unit possible.
He assured residents that the VCRU would operate within the confines of the law, uphold human rights and work in synergy with other security agencies and community stakeholders to strengthen public safety across the state.
While calling on citizens to support security agencies with timely and credible information, the Commissioner emphasized that security remains a shared responsibility between government and the people.

In his goodwill message, the State Security Adviser, Commander Jerry Omodara (Rtd), commended Governor Ododo for his unwavering commitment to security and noted that the state has recorded significant successes in the fight against criminality.
He assured residents that the government remains resolute in flushing out the few remaining criminal elements attempting to threaten the peace of the state, adding that their days are numbered.
Commander Omodara also praised the Kogi State Police Command and other security agencies for their dedication, professionalism and continued partnership with the government in ensuring lasting peace and security across Kogi State.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has dismissed reports of an alleged kidnapping incident at Phase 1 Primary School, Gbagalape, Abuja, describing the alarm as false.

The Command disclosed that officers attached to the Nyanya Division responded to a distress call on Thursday morning following reports of an ongoing kidnapping at the school.

Police operatives immediately secured and searched the school and its surroundings but found no evidence of any kidnapping. No suspect was sighted and no victim was identified.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, surrounding hills, boundaries, adjoining areas, and nearby schools were also searched as part of precautionary measures.

The Command urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information capable of creating unnecessary panic and tension.

FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, reiterated the need for residents to promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies through the nearest police station or the Command’s emergency lines.

The Police Command assured residents of its commitment to maintaining security across the Federal Capital Territory.

KOGI CLIMATE CHANGE DG ADVOCATES STRONGER LEMCS FOR RESILIENT DISASTER RESPONSE AT STAKEHOLDERS’ ENGAGEMENT

The Director General of the Kogi State Climate Change Agency has called for stronger, better-equipped Local Emergency Management Committees (LEMCs) as the frontline defence against climate-related disasters in the state.

The DG gave the goodwill message at a stakeholders’ engagement organised by NEMA in collaboration with the Kogi State agency management. The meeting, held in Lokoja, had the theme: “Strengthening Local Emergency Management Committee for Resilient Disaster Management in Kogi State.”

Stakeholders in attendance included representatives of SEMA, NEMA, traditional rulers, local government officials, community leaders, NGOs, security personnel and frontline health workers.

Speaking at the event, the DG emphasised that climate change is intensifying the frequency and severity of floods, erosion, and extreme weather events across Kogi. He said resilient communities must start with functional LEMCs that can respond quickly before state and federal agencies arrive.

Key points from his goodwill message:

Data and Early Warning: Strengthen the flow of timely, localised climate and flood forecasts to communities. It also provides valuable data input into the Biennial Transparency reporting
Capacity Building: Equip Local Emergency Management Committees with skills for risk mapping, evacuation planning, and community sensitization.

Partnership: Leverage resources from state, federal, and international partners like ACReSAL and NEMA to fund local resilience projects.

The DG commended SEMA for convening this engagement and for its leadership in safeguarding lives and livelihoods. Together, we can make Kogi State a model for climate-resilient emergency management.

HEADQUARTERS JOINT TASK FORCE OPERATION SAVANNAH SHIELD DISMISSES FALSE ALLEGATIONS OF TROOPS’ NEGLIGENCE AND EXTORTION IN CHIKANDA AREA

The attention of Headquarters Joint Task Force (HQ JTF) (North Central) Operation Savannah Shield (OPSS) has been drawn to an online report published by Sahara Reporters alleging that troops deployed at Yashikara community, Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State, abandoned their duty post and relocated to Chikanda during an attack in order to establish checkpoints for the purpose of extorting motorists. The report further alleged that troops failed to respond to a distress call during an attack on the Emir’s Palace in Yashikara community.

Headquarters OPSS wishes to categorically state that these claims are false, misleading, and a deliberate misrepresentation of facts.

For clarity, JTF OPSS has no deployment in Yashikara community, which clearly invalidates the claim that troops abandoned or relocated from the area during the incident. Troops are only deployed at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Chikanda, where they have continued to discharge their operational responsibilities professionally and diligently.

It is also important to state unequivocally that troops of OPSS have remained disciplined and professional in the discharge of their duties and have not engaged in any form of extortion of motorists as alleged. Personnel of the operation have consistently upheld high standards of professionalism while carrying out tasks aimed at safeguarding lives and property within the area of responsibility.

Regarding the attack on the Emir’s Palace, which occurred on 25 May 2026, troops deployed at HQ OPSS FOB Chikanda, located approximately 38.7 kilometres, received information on the incident at about 0145 hours (1:45 a.m.) and immediately mobilised and moved to the location in response to the distress call.

Upon arrival, it was discovered that terrorists had abducted three women and five children, while the sitting room of the Emir’s residence and two vehicles within the palace premises had been set ablaze.

The allegation by Sahara Reporters that troops failed to respond to the incident is therefore false and maliciously misleading, as troops responded immediately upon receiving information on the attack. Such reports unfairly seek to undermine the sacrifices, commitment, and operational efforts of personnel of OPSS, while also attempting to tarnish the image of the military working tirelessly to ensure peace and security within the region.

Headquarters OPSS therefore urges members of the public and media organisations to verify information through credible channels before disseminating reports capable of misleading the public, undermining operational efforts, or diminishing the morale of troops in the field.

Oyo School Abduction: I Will Expose Those Behind the Kidnapping of Pupils, Teachers — Sunday Igboho

Yoruba Nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has condemned the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo State, warning that those behind insecurity in the South-West would eventually be exposed.

Igboho's reaction comes amid growing public outrage over the kidnapping of dozens of schoolchildren and teachers from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, an incident that has sparked protests, school closures, and nationwide concern.

The activist described the worsening security situation as unacceptable and called for decisive action against kidnappers, bandits, and other criminal elements operating within forests and rural communities across the region.

He reiterated his readiness to deploy the proposed Iru Ekun Security Network to support efforts against insecurity, noting that the initiative is awaiting the necessary approval from relevant authorities before full operations can commence.

The development comes as pressure continues to mount on security agencies and government officials to secure the release of the abducted pupils and teachers, whose continued captivity has generated widespread condemnation across the country.

Meanwhile, teachers in Oyo State have embarked on an indefinite strike over the incident, while student groups and civil society organizations have staged protests demanding urgent government intervention.

The abduction has further intensified discussions on school security, with stakeholders calling for stronger measures to protect educational institutions and rural communities from criminal attacks.

As rescue efforts continue, residents across the South-West have renewed calls for a coordinated response to tackle kidnapping, banditry, and other security threats confronting the region.
