Many motorists in Nigeria assume that once they are stopped by FRSC officials, the quickest solution is to "settle" the matter on the spot. In some cases, people part with ₦50,000, ₦100,000, or even more.

But that's not how the law works.

Traffic violations come with officially approved fines and every driver should be aware of them. Some examples include:

Driving without a valid driver's licence — ₦10,000

Vehicle producing excessive smoke — ₦5,000

No fire extinguisher in the vehicle — ₦3,000

Using a mobile phone while driving — ₦4,000

Driving without fastening a seat belt — ₦2,000

Exceeding the speed limit — ₦5,000

Most importantly, these fines are not meant to be handed directly to any FRSC officer on the roadside. Payments should be made through the government's approved channels.

If you're stopped for a traffic offence, ask the officer to state the offence, confirm the official penalty and follow the proper payment process.

Being informed about your rights and responsibilities can save you money and help promote accountability on our roads.
