Defending the Nation: Senator Ndume Welcomes Army Committee, Calls for Stronger Civil-Military Collaboration.

Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, representing Borno South Senatorial District has today hosted members of the Senate Committee on Army to a dinner at his residence in Maiduguri. The visit formed part of the committee’s official oversight engagement in the North East, aimed at evaluating military operations and reviewing strategic support to the Nigerian Army.

The committee, led by its Chairman, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, was in Maiduguri for operational briefings and assessments as part of its constitutional mandate to ensure adequate legislative oversight of the military’s role in counterinsurgency and national security.

Senator Ndume, who chaired the Committee on Army in the 9th Assembly and remains an influential voice in the current committee, expressed gratitude to the visiting Senators for honouring his invitation.

“Let me reiterate once again how fortunate we are in Borno to have a governor who is tirelessly committed to ending insecurity in the state. A significant portion of Governor Zulum’s energy and time is devoted to supporting the Nigerian Army and strengthening security operations,”Ndume stated.

The lawmaker emphasized the importance of collaboration between civilian leadership and the military to consolidate the gains made in the fight against insurgency and restore lasting peace.

In his remarks, Senator Yar’Adua provided insights into the committee’s activities during their visit:

“We received a comprehensive operational briefing from the Theatre Commander. Our mission here is to ensure that all military-related appropriations and oversight responsibilities are discharged effectively. We are visiting various formations, this team is in Maiduguri while another team is currently in Sokoto.”

He acknowledged the critical role of adequate funding and logistics in achieving security objectives and expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and leadership of the Senate for increasing budgetary support to the Nigerian Army.

“Security is the bedrock of development. Without security, no meaningful progress can be achieved. We are committed to ensuring that the Army receives all necessary resources to carry out its constitutional duties effectively,” Senator Yar’Adua emphasized.

He concluded by praising Senator Ndume’s longstanding support to the committee:

“From the very beginning, Senator Ndume has gone above and beyond to ensure our committee is well supported. On behalf of the entire committee, I extend our sincere appreciation to you, Distinguished Senator.”

The visit is part of the Senate’s renewed commitment to national security, military welfare, and responsive governance, especially in regions like the North East, where the military’s presence remains critical to peace-building and recovery.
