CBDA Begins Alau Dam Rehabilitation, Opens Spillway for Controlled Water Discharge

Maiduguri, July 23, 2025 – The Chad Basin Development Authority (CBDA) has announced the commencement of rehabilitation and upgrade works at the Alau Dam, in Maiduguri.

According to a statement issued by the Authority’s Executive Director (Engineering), Engr. Mohammed Shettima, the contract for the project has been awarded, and the contractor is already on site, with construction activities currently in progress.

As part of the ongoing work, the spillway gates of the Alau Dam have been opened to allow for the controlled release of water downstream. The discharge will flow through the regular water channels, including Lagos Street, Gwange, the Custom Bridge, and into the Jere Bowl.

The CBDA has urged residents, particularly those living along the River Ngadda and in the Gwange area, not to panic, as the movement of water is a normal and expected part of the process.

"The Chad Basin Development Authority will continue to monitor the situation closely until the water level in the reservoir recedes, at which point the spillway gates will be closed," the statement added.

The rehabilitation project is part of ongoing efforts to improve water infrastructure and enhance flood control in Maiduguri and surrounding communities.

Borno SEMA Debunks Viral Video, Issues Public Safety Advisory

The Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has debunked a video currently circulating on social media, clarifying that the footage is from a 2022 announcement and not a recent alert.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 24, 2025, the agency emphasized that it has not released any such warning in recent days.

The SEMA Director General, Ali Abdullahi, however, used the opportunity to advise residents living along riverbanks and waterways to remain vigilant and ensure public safety by removing any obstructions that could impede water flow or lead to flooding.

The agency reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property and urged the public to rely only on verified information from official channels.
