Borno State Ministry of Education Launches 2025 Back-to-School Campaign, Inaugurates Five New Schools

The Ministry of Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation, in partnership with SUBEB, UNICEF, and AGILE, launched the 2025 School Enrolment Campaign on October 6, 2025.

Commissioner Engr. Lawan Abba Wakilbe urged stakeholders to help cut the number of out-of-school children (currently 800,000) by half within the academic session, stressing the role of recent infrastructure investments. Traditional leaders, represented by the Shehu of Borno’s delegate, pledged their support.

Key speakers—including Prof. Bulama Kagu (SUBEB Chairman), Prof. Yusuf Gana Balami (Senior Secondary Board Chairman), and partners like UNICEF—highlighted education as central to sustainable development.

The campaign also marked the inauguration of five new senior secondary schools in Jere, Maiduguri, and Mafa LGAs.

The event drew participation from government officials, traditional rulers, and development partners, all reaffirming commitment to boosting school enrolment and access to quality education.

Nigeria @65: Zulum Congratulates Tinubu, says Peace Building and Recovery Efforts Succeeding

Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other Nigerians on Wednesday on the occasion of Nigeria's 65th Independence Day Celebration.

Marking the milestone, Governor Zulum acknowledged the challenges the country has faced over the past six and a half decades but emphasised that Nigeria has consistently emerged stronger. He called for continued unity, mutual understanding, and peaceful coexistence amongst its citizens.

The Governor commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership and continued support to the armed forces and other security agencies involved in counter-insurgency operations in the North East, particularly in Borno State.

Zulum, in a statement he personally signed, also expressed commitment to providing peace and development to Borno, stating, “We will not rest. We will not be complacent. We will continue to work, strive more, and fight for a Borno where everyone can dream of a better life, every farmer can till their land, our industries can thrive, and every family can sleep in peace.”

Governor Zulum’s full statement below:

“As we join our brothers and sisters across the country to mark the 65th anniversary of our independence. We celebrate the Nigerian nation's freedom, unity, and resilience. But on this day, our reflections in Borno are particularly profound. Our journey has been uniquely tested, yet our hope remains unbroken.”

“It is indeed worth celebrating 65 years of nationhood as an indivisible nation. “Despite the threats of insecurity, such as Boko Haram, ISWAP, and other criminal elements, our gallant military officers and security forces are winning the battle. We must unite as a people to fight the common enemy.”

“We remember with solemn gratitude the sacrifices of our gallant men and women in uniform, the military, the police, the Civilian JTF, and all security agencies who have paid the ultimate price to keep us safe. We honour the memory of our sons and daughters, fathers and mothers, who were lost to the insurgency.”

" Let me use this opportunity to commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership and continued support to the armed forces and other security agencies involved in counter-insurgency operations in the North East, particularly in Borno State.

“Our primary and most sacred duty has been the restoration of peace and security. We adopted a multi-faceted approach, understanding that a purely kinetic solution is not enough.”

“We have consistently and directly supported our security forces. From providing hundreds of operational vehicles, armoured personnel carriers, and sophisticated communication and other operational gadgets to consistently visiting difficult frontline locations, so that we ensure that our troops are motivated and better equipped to face the enemy. We have built and renovated accommodations for our security operatives, among many other supports.”

“Peace cannot be complete without restoration. Therefore, we have undertaken the most ambitious resettlement programme in Nigeria. We have successfully closed all the official internally displaced persons (IDP) camps within Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, moving our people from a state of dependency to dignity and self-reliance.”

“We have supported the safe and voluntary return of a significant number of our displaced population to their ancestral homes by providing them with livelihood packages. We have constructed thousands of resettlement houses across local government areas, providing shelter for returnees.”

“Our resilience-building initiative is greatly working, Socio-economic activities have picked up in resettled communities such as Baga, Malam Fatori, Kukawa, Gwoza, Darajamal, Warabe, Limankara, Logumane, Gajibo, Marte, Gamborun Ngala, amongst others.”

“We have rebuilt critical infrastructure, including hundreds of healthcare centres, primary and secondary schools, ensuring that our children can learn and our sick can be treated in their communities.”

“Dear Citizens of Borno, our vision extends beyond survival to prosperity. We are laying the foundation for a post-insurgency economy.

"Our administration's peacebuilding and recovery efforts are greatly succeeding. The integrated policies, designed to address the root causes of insurgency, build community resilience, and promote reconciliation, have been fruitful.

Trade and Commerce as a cornerstone, we have reestablished and upgraded to an international standard our cattle markets in Gamboru Nagal, Banki and the one in Kasuwan Shanu in Jere Local Government Area.”

“We are pursuing the establishment of the African Inter-Continental Free Trade Zone in Banki and a Dry Inland Port in Maiduguri. We have invested a lot of resources to support the federal government’s initiative of international operations at Muhammadu Buhari Airport. These, among other strategic plans we have drawn, will significantly boost the economy of our state and create several employment opportunities.”

“Through our various empowerment schemes, we have provided startup capital, tools, and training to tens of thousands of our youths and women, turning them from victims into entrepreneurs and employers of labour.”

We have constructed and equipped modern and specialised hospitals, two nursing colleges, and recruited hundreds of healthcare professionals to bring quality medical services to our people. Our world-class Kashim Ibrahim University Teaching Hospital will soon be activated.”

“We have invested hugely in the education sector, recruited over 4,000 teachers and renovated schools across the state. Our scholarship programmes have sent thousands of Borno indigenes to universities at home and abroad, investing in the human capital that will drive our future.”

“In the agricultural sector, we have distributed thousands of tonnes of fertiliser, improved seeds, and agricultural machinery to our farmers. We have revived some sections of the South Chad Irrigation Project, enabling the cultivation of thousands of hectares of land and moving us towards food sufficiency.”

“My dear people, the journey is not over. Challenges remain. We still face the threat of remnant terrorists. But there is a gradual return to peace in Borno. Many of our communities have reestablished themselves, our markets are bustling, and our farms are again yielding bountiful harvests.”

“On this Independence Day, let us draw strength from our collective resilience. Let us renew our commitment to unity, peace, and the progress of Borno State within a prosperous Nigeria.”

Thank you.
God bless Borno State
God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria

TRUST GOVERNOR ZULUM, HE MEANS WELL FOR BORNO!

… Haters of the Media Team, slow down, we are winding up

By Abdurrahman Ahmed Bundi

Over the past two days, there have been some baseless allegations on the social media that the Borno State Government has detained some minors for over a year in a secret facility and this has sparked discussions.

Any critical and intelligent mind should challenge the quality and source of any information, and any credible information should be judged on its merit in terms of evidence, specific facts, and not blanket allegations.

So, to test and validate such claims, there has to be credible evidence. The fundamental question any sensible person should ask is: Who are these minors that were allegedly locked up for over a year? Where do they live? Who are their parents or guardians? Is it logical for such detentions to take place and their parents or guardians will keep quiet? Can anybody who lives anywhere in Borno State and is on this platform provide evidence of either their siblings, children, neighbours, friends, or acquaintances that were locked up for over one year without any criminal offence?

Please, let us ponder over these fundamental questions, before we continue …

Welcome back and before we continue. Let’s refresh our memories. Let’s think of the Borno we lived in before Zulum became Governor. Let’s think about his commitment to our safety, as well as his resilience and sacrifices.

Since assuming office, Zulum has devoted himself to the restoration of peace and stability in our state which has suffered years of turmoil. His approach has been hands-on, because he believes in leading by example and not from the comfort of his office. This dedication is evident in his frequent visits to the most-affected areas, where he listens with empathy to the concerns of citizens, assesses their needs, and works tirelessly to provide solutions.

My dear brothers and sisters, it’s too early to forget the Baga incident, and more recently, Marte, Kala-Balge, Wulgo, Ngala and several other troubled areas, where Zulum confronted insecurity to restore stability while sacrificing his life.

I will never forget the Baga incident and my encounter with the Governor. As a member of the media team, I remember our strategic attempt to silence the attack, as a way of de-escalating tension. He overheard me discussing it with some security aides and he said, “Look, if you silence me, I will sack you.”

Not oblivious to his sack threat or his authority to act, Zulum called me to his room after returning to Monguno, and said, “My brother, it has never been my intention to be confrontational. But I am privileged to have a lot of sensitive information that you people don't have. Monguno is the last town standing. If we keep quiet and allow this huge space without a human population, the insurgents will have the luxury to strategize, and gradually, we will reach a point where Maiduguri itself will fall.”

He continued: “I took an oath to protect my people, and I will do that with my last drop of blood. I don't mind losing my life if that will bring peace to Borno; I am ready for the supreme sacrifice.”

Back to the claim by Sowore and cohorts. Do you not clearly see that these are detractors and merchants of war, who do not want Borno to live in peace? Do you not see what they are frustrated at and cashing-in on to perpetrate their evil campaigns?

We the people of Borno are aware of the threat once posed by the “Malian gang”. Thanks to the combined efforts of the Borno State Government and security agencies, the activities of this once notorious criminal group, which terrorised soft targets, has been curtailed. They once terrorised the state by robbing people across communities and commercial vehicles, using dangerous weapons like axe, guns, jack knives, among others, which have in several instances, resulted to the loss of lives and property and inflicted live-threatening injuries on many.

Zulum swiftly deployed every machinery to curb the menace, and I have seen one of the purveyors of the false information reluctantly commend Zulum’s efforts. Do you not see how they live elsewhere, but instigate you to rebel, while hiding behind the veil of promoting human rights? Their aim is to divert your attention away from the real, practically-evident progress made by Zulum across sectors.

We are all witnesses to Zulum’s rebuilding effort, which has now become a landmark across the length and breadth of Borno. He has and continues to build new schools, provide healthcare facilities and services, and other infrastructure that were destroyed during the conflict. He understands that education is a key foundation for nation-building.

Zulum re-established schools that were once closed. This spiked enrolment and ensured that children could access quality education. His administration implemented programs to provide scholarships and support for teachers to encourage teaching and learning.

Despite the challenges, he remained steadfast, focused, and dedicated to make Borno great again.

So, dear citizens of Borno, trust in your Governor. His hard work, resilience, and unwavering dedication to your well-being are unparalleled. Let’s continue to stand firm, support one another, and believe in the power of hope and unity.

… Haters of the Media Team, slow down, we are winding up!

Nevertheless, to you – yes, you, who religiously and fanatically hate the members of Zulum’s media team; please slow down. We have expended the most part of our tenure in office. We know how you so much crave to take our place. Please, do not be inpatient. We are already winding up, and we shall leave the stage in no time.

We have seen all the good, bad, and ugly comments. We thank you so much for the good, as well as for the bad and the ugly. If not for anything, you have contributed greatly towards increasing our visibility. For example, I have got a lot more followers in the last few days; in fact, much more than the usual.

Let me, however, say that for the benefit of those genuinely concerned and frustrated by the negative comments on the Governor, a rejoinder is not always the best. It is important to approach criticism with a mind-set of media literacy. Some critics may latch onto sensational claims because they resonate emotionally. A rejoinder can draw more attention to the original false claim, and potentially, amplify the misinformation instead of clarifying it.

In strategic communication, depending on the issue, a quiet correction, a policy-focused briefing, or a long-form, but fragmented explainer may be more productive than a rapid rebuttal. The goal is to preserve public trust, not to win a rhetorical battle.

Exposed: Sowore’s Fake News and the Failed Attempt to Smear Governor Zulum

By: Alkali Abba Bashir

In Nigeria’s complex media landscape, no platform has been more controversial than Sahara Reporters, founded by activist-turned-political agitator, Omoyele Sowore. What began as a self-styled watchdog platform has over time gained notoriety for publishing sensational, exaggerated, and sometimes outright false stories—stories that trend quickly but collapse under scrutiny. Founded by Omoyele Sowore—a man who once wore the badge of activism with pride—the outlet has morphed into a megaphone for sensationalism, misinformation, and political vendettas. What began as a digital watchdog has, over time, become a factory of half-truths and inflammatory narratives, often aimed at undermining credible public figures.

Their latest target? Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State.

The Airport Demolition Lie

Recently, Sahara Reporters claimed that Governor Zulum “recklessly demolished over 1,000 houses” around Maiduguri International Airport without compensation, branding him “heartless” and indifferent to the plight of the poor.

But the facts tell a different story:

Only about 300 houses, not 1,000+, were affected. The land had been federally reserved since 1950. The Airport’s 1978 master plan already designated the space for aviation use.
Notices had been served to residents since 2020, warning against illegal occupation. The demolition was part of a federal aviation upgrade project, not a Zulum initiative. Governor Zulum was merely ensuring compliance with federal directives designed to make Maiduguri Airport meet international aviation safety standards—including a new crash gate to save lives in case of emergencies.

Yet Sahara Reporters twisted this into a tale of cruelty. Governor Zulum’s role was not one of destruction, but of compliance and coordination—ensuring that federal safety protocols were respected. Yet Sahara Reporters twisted this into a narrative of cruelty, ignoring context, legality, and public interest.

This is not an isolated case. Sahara Reporters has repeatedly published stories later proven false or misleading:

Katsina “Pastor Stipends” (2023): Claimed the state government approved stipends for Christian clerics. The government immediately debunked it.

Ondo First Lady Convoy Story (2023): Reported that Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s convoy killed a girl in Akure. The police confirmed it was false—an unregistered Lexus was responsible.

Sheikh Bala Lau “Death” Hoax (2024): Published that the respected cleric had died. Hours later, Bala Lau appeared alive, and the platform retracted.

Isa Pantami’s Properties (2021): Reported he acquired three houses worth billions. Pantami denied, and no evidence was ever presented.

Nasiru Danu Defamation Case (2022): A businessman successfully sued Sahara Reporters for defamation; the court awarded damages against the platform.

Olalekan Fatodu Case (2017): SR was dragged to court for false claims. The case collapsed, but their reckless style was exposed.

Perhaps most dangerously, Sahara Reporters has a record of publishing fabricated insecurity stories—designed not to inform but to inflame:

Phantom Boko Haram Attacks (2020–2021): The platform reported mass killings in villages that locals later confirmed never occurred.

Army “Massacre” Claims: On several occasions, Sahara Reporters accused Nigerian troops of massacring civilians without evidence—only to quietly delete or downplay the stories when proven false.

Zabarmari Farmers Case (2020): While tragic killings did occur, Sahara Reporters exaggerated the death toll far beyond official and eyewitness accounts, fueling panic in already traumatized communities.

“Abduction Stories” that Never Happened: Reports of students abducted in Borno and Yobe surfaced on SR, only for state officials and schools to confirm no such incident took place.

Exaggerated IDP Camp Attacks: Claims of camps being wiped out by insurgents were later refuted by humanitarian agencies on the ground.

By repeatedly pushing unverified insecurity reports, Sahara Reporters does not just smear leaders—it endangers lives by spreading panic and undermining public trust in real security alerts.

Against this backdrop, it becomes clear why Sahara Reporters targets Governor Zulum. Unlike politicians who hide behind sirens, Zulum is known for:

Personally supervising aid delivery in insurgency-hit areas.

Visiting schools, hospitals, and markets unannounced.

Rebuilding Borno’s infrastructure under fire.

Launching empowerment programs for youths, women, and displaced persons.

Zulum has risked his life countless times on the dangerous roads of Borno, refusing to govern from the safety of an air-conditioned office. His leadership style is one of sacrifice, humility, and courage. His leadership is defined by sacrifice, humility, and a relentless commitment to service. To brand such a man “heartless” is not just inaccurate—it’s an affront to the resilience of Borno’s people and the truth of Zulum’s legacy.

To call such a man “heartless” is not only false—it insults the resilience of the people of Borno.

Fake news thrives on exaggeration. It manipulates numbers, twists intentions, and spreads fear. But truth, no matter how delayed, always prevails.

Governor Zulum represents the opposite of what Sahara Reporters promotes. His work is a testimony that leadership is about service, not sensational headlines. Omoyele Sowore and Sahara Reporters may continue their campaign of sensationalism, but history is not written in hashtags. It is etched in the lives touched, the roads rebuilt, the schools reopened, and the communities healed.

As Nigerians, we must learn to separate propaganda from fact. Journalism should hold leaders accountable, but it should do so with truth, evidence, and integrity—not blackmail disguised as activism.

Omoyele Sowore and Sahara Reporters may continue to publish sensational lies for clicks and controversy, but history is a far harsher judge than social media trends.

While Sowore’s propaganda fades into footnotes, Babagana Umara Zulum’s legacy of courage, sacrifice, and service will endure for generations.

Because fake news may trend for a day—
But true leadership lives forever.
