Community Shield: Kevin De Bruyne to miss Arsenal clash
Kevin De Bruyne will miss the start of next season due to the hamstring injury he sustained in Manchester City’s Champions League final win.

The Belgian who has been an important player for Man City ever since joining them in 2015 was pivotal to his side’s historic treble-winning campaign last season but was forced to watch much of the victory over Inter Milan in Istanbul from the sidelines.

The 31-year-old started the UCL final but had to be subbed off after just 36 minutes after picking up what appeared to be a hamstring injury, with Phil Foden taking his place.

And now, Pep Guardiola will have to make do without him for at least the first two games of the 2023/24 campaign.

Benue Assembly recommends LG chairmen, councillors’ suspension
Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Mr. Aondona Dajoh, has explained that the House recommended the immediate suspension of the 23 local government council chairmen in the state in line with the provisions of the law, given glaring cases of misapplication of public funds and disregard for relevant financial laws.

Recall that the House had, on June 21, 2023, ordered the suspension of the chairmen, following the interim report of the adhoc committee set up by the House to investigate the finances of the councils.

There was a gale of the sack in the nation’s security architecture, and ministries and parastatals, yesterday. There was a clean sweep as President Bola Tinubu retired all the service chiefs, advisers, and the Comptroller-General of Customs, and dissolved boards of Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs and parastatal.

The president also replaced some top military commanders in a move that shook the security firmament of the country.

President Tinubu, who recently ordered the security chiefs to synergise and crush oil thieves and criminals, ordered the changes shortly before jetting out to France, on his first foreign trip as elected head of state.

Stakeholders of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in the north, under the aegis of Northern Progressives Union, NPU, have asked President Bola Tinubu to resist the temptation of appointing any of the immediate past northern governor as a minister in his cabinet.

They particularly zeroed in on the former Jigawa State governor, Mohammed Badaru.

The stakeholders in a statement signed on their behalf by Mohammed Kiyawa, yesterday, said the group is making the plea based on the fact that the former governors were all spent forces, failed politicians and disgruntled leaders, who do not fit into today’s reality of the present vision of the Renewed Hope mantra of the present administration.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU said the Student Loan Bill, which President Bola Tinubu signed into law has the potential of sending many students out of school.
ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke stated this while speaking with newsmen on Wednesday.

Recall that, on Monday, the President signed the bill, describing the law as a fulfillment of one of his campaign promises.

But, Osodeke said the law might have an adverse effect on millions of prospective students who rely on tuition-free higher institutions of learning to acquire knowledge.
He said, “A country where more than 133 million are living below the poverty line and you want to introduce tuition fees? It will be counterproductive.
“Every Nigerian should know what is going to happen next and there may likely be another bill waiting for signature that will introduce tuition fees.
