Observed every first Ihigile market day of the month, the festival is a time of thanksgiving — when the Igede people honor God, ancestral spirits, and deities for a rich yam harvest, while seeking blessings for prosperity in the coming year.

Love, badges, and history! Patrick Kehinde Longe and his wife, Yetunde, have blazed an unforgettable trail in the Nigeria Police Force as its first-ever senior officer couple.

The pair met in Kano after joining the Force, tied the knot in 1990, and climbed the ranks side by side. In a jaw-dropping milestone, they were both appointed Commissioners of Police on the same day in 2022.

Patrick bowed out as Commissioner in 2023, while Yetunde signed off in style as Assistant Inspector General of Police in 2024 — cementing their place as the Force’s ultimate power couple.

Nigerian preacher, Prophetess Sommy, has marked five years since she turned her back on a life she described as being “in the world” to embrace her calling as a woman of God.

In a heartfelt post, the minister shared her emotional journey, celebrating the anniversary of her conversion with gratitude and renewed faith.

“Exactly five years today I gave my life to Christ,” she wrote. “I may not be perfect or see angels, but I am far better than the person I was that day.”

She went on to reflect on how faith has reshaped her life: “I behave differently, think differently, love differently and I see the world differently. Thank you Jesus for saving my soul.”

Sommy, who now ministers as a prophetess, ended her message with a passionate call for others to seek the same path of renewal: “Give Him a chance today sincerely and you will be glad you did.”

BENUE STUDENTS EXCEL AT 2025 NATIONAL MATHEMATICS CONFERENCE IN SOKOTO

Benue State students have distinguished themselves at the 2025 National Mathematics Conference held in Sokoto between September 2 and 5, securing top positions across multiple categories.

In the Primary Category, Nwankwo Emeka of Laurel Children Academy, Gboko, and Shakyumna Paul of Sora Heights, Gboko, won first place in the Quiz, while Laurel Children Academy clinched first place in the Olympiad.

In the Junior Category, Akorshu Kelvin of Sora Schools, Gboko, and Damsa Saater of St. John’s Secondary School, Gboko, emerged first in the Quiz competition.

In the Senior Category, Iorliam Harry of Sora Schools, Gboko, placed second in the Olympiad.

The performance has been described by education stakeholders as a reflection of the state’s growing investment in education and the commitment of schools and teachers to academic excellence.

HOODLUMS KILL COMMERCIAL CYCLIST, STEAL MOTORCYCLE IN KWALI

A commercial cyclist, identified as Lawal Ibrahim, has been stabbed to death by suspected hoodlums along Kilankwa village in Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday after the victim picked up two passengers from Kwali market. Along the way, one of them reportedly pulled a knife and stabbed him in the neck, causing him to lose control and crash.

The assailants then fled the scene with his motorcycle. Villagers returning from their farms discovered the victim lying in a pool of blood and alerted local vigilantes, who rushed him to a hospital in Dabi. He, however, died shortly after arrival.

His remains have since been released to his family for burial.

A vigilante member, Lazarus Isaac, confirmed the incident, adding that the deceased was still alive when help arrived but could not survive the injuries. Police sources at the Kwali division also confirmed the attack.

POLICE ARREST WOMAN OVER ALLEGED ATTEMPT TO TRAFFIC THREE CHILDREN IN NASARAWA

The Nasarawa State Police Command has arrested a 22-year-old woman, Aisha Hashiru, for allegedly attempting to traffic three minors in Mararaba, Karu Local Government Area.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Friday in Lafia.

JUST IN: AUTO CRASH AT WULKO, INJURED SEVERAL IN NASARAWA

An auto crash occurred Friday evening at Wulko, near Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, involving a Sharon bus loaded with passengers.

Eyewitnesses said the accident was triggered by a tire burst, causing the vehicle to lose control. No deaths have been reported, but several passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Rescue efforts by authorities and passersby are underway to move the victims to nearby hospitals for treatment.

PLATEAU ASSEMBLY MOVES AGAINST ILLEGAL HOUSE AGENTS, REPEALS RENT EDICT

The Plateau State House of Assembly has moved to sanitize the real estate sector in the state, banning illegal house agents and repealing the outdated rent edict.

The decision followed a motion raised during plenary on Thursday by Speaker Rt. Hon. Gabriel Dewan, who decried the rising cost of accommodation in Jos metropolis and the unchecked activities of unauthorized agents.

Dewan lamented that both landlords and tenants have become victims of exploitation due to the absence of regulation, with many accommodation seekers forced to pay exorbitant fees under fraudulent practices.

The House unanimously resolved to introduce a licensing system for house agents to curb exploitation and ensure proper regulation of the housing sector.

AMAC LAUNCHES CRACKDOWN AFTER FAMILY DIES IN MABUSHI TRAGEDY

The Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) has ordered a sweeping clampdown on touts after a family of three was killed in a tragic crash under Mabushi Bridge.

Police said Emeka Ehekweme and his wife died when hoodlums, posing as revenue agents, forced their way into their Toyota Highlander near Berger Junction, sparking a struggle that led to the fatal accident. Two of the assailants also died.

AMAC Chairman Christopher Zaka Maikalangu has set up a special task force to arrest and prosecute extortionists impersonating council officials at major city hotspots.

The FCT Administration and police have promised tougher measures and a full investigation.

2027: PVC, KEY TO RETURNING GOV. ALIA, SAYS BENUE DEPUTY SPEAKER

The Deputy Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Mrs. Lami Danladi-Ogenyi, has called on residents of the state to participate actively in the ongoing voter registration exercise, describing the Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) as the instrument to ensure the re-election of Governor Hyacinth Alia in 2027.

Speaking to journalists in Makurdi on Tuesday, Danladi-Ogenyi appealed particularly to her constituents in Ado Local Government Area to turn out in large numbers for the registration. She disclosed that she had already set up committees across the ten council wards of the LGA to mobilise supporters for the exercise.
