Al Hilal may replace Ighalo with Ronaldo

Saudi Arabian champions, Al Hilal, are not keen to extend the contract of Odion Ighalo as they explore the options of landing former Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo in January, LENTORLITENEWS Sports Extra reports.

Ighalo arrived Al Hilal from rivals Al Shabab in January for a fee in the region of €2.9m and his contract with the club ends June 30, 2023.

According to Sky Sports, Al Hilal are preparing to make the first mega offer to Ronaldo barely a week after the 37-year-old became a free agent.

Ronaldo and Manchester United parted ways after the Portuguese icon launched a scathing attack on the club, manager Erik Ten Haag and some of the club’s players in an explosive interview with journalist Piers Morgan.

Al Hilal are big admirers of Ronaldo and reports suggest the Saudi Arabian giants made a proposal for the former Real Madrid star’s signature during the summer transfer market. Manchester United, however, turned down their multi-million euros approach and that could change, though, with Ronaldo free to negotiate his transfer.

“He is one player Al Hilal is looking to sign but that depends on some departures,” the Sky Sports report stated.

Spanish newspaper outlet Marca, also revealed that Ronaldo sensationally agreed a two-and-a-half year deal with Al Nassr worth an eye-watering £172.9m per year, that will see him play until the age of 40.

Should Ighalo chooses to stay at Al Hilal despite Ronaldo’s arrival, the Nigerian will go head-to-head with the Portuguese superstar.

The Nigerian striker fired the goals that powered the team to win the Saudi Premier League title on the season’s final day last year.

NANS begins nationwide protest Monday

The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students has declared a nationwide protest to demand the release of a student of the Federal University, Dutse, Jigawa State, Aminu Mohammed, who was arrested and sent to prison over a tweet on Aisha Buhari, wife of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

NANS President, Usman Barambu, in a statement sent to The LENTORLITENEWS  on Thursday, noted the protest, which would commence on Monday, would be indefinite until Mohammed regained freedom.

“Sequel to the exhaustion of all options available to us before confrontation in seeking the freedom of one of us who was arrested in questionable manner, tortured, molested, harassed and detained by agents of government, you are hereby notified of the decision of the leadership of NANS to proceed on a nationwide protest.

“We have consulted and consolidated which yielded no desirable results in seeking the freedom of Mohammed, hence, the protest shall commence as follows: Monday, December 5, 2022 nationwide.

“Please note that our demonstration shall continue until he is released unconditionally,” the statement said.

The LENTORLITENEWS gathered that Mohammed was reportedly picked up by security operatives who traced him to Jigawa and brought to him Abuja in November.

Justice Halilu Yusuf of the Federal Capital Territory High Court subsequently remanded Mohammed at the Suleja Correctional Centre in Niger State for cyber stalking.

Adamu’s arrest has generated reactions on social media, with notable Nigerians calling for his release.

Barambu noted that NANS’ protest would be against the First Lady and the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba.

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has said there will no longer be a hiding place for oil thieves and their accomplices, no matter how highly placed in the country, if he takes power in 2023.

This was Atiku’s pledge on Saturday in Lagos when he interacted with a broad spectrum of corporate Nigeria under the aegis of Business Dialogue Stakeholders Forum at Eko hotel.

Doyens of industry at the session include: Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Jim Ovia, Femi Otedola, Tony Elumelu, Herbert Wigwe and Muhammad Hayatudeen among others.

Atiku also said he would, in the interest of national development, confiscate all oil bloc allocated to some Nigerians who had failed to make them operational.

The former Vice President, who promised to sustain frequent interactive sessions between government and the country’s business class when voted to power, equally outlined the ways he would tackle what he described as an ailing economy.

“If you are not going to develop oil blocs given to you, we will take it away and give it to those who will develop it. We will also assemble the names of those involved in oil theft, publish same and prosecute them,” Atiku told the stakeholders.

On his plans to boost the oil and gas sector, Atiku noted that under the administration of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, the quota of oil production was earmarked for increase to four million barrels per day.

That plan, he explained, would be resuscitated and sustained beyond the projected figure, when he is voted into office next year, pointing out that in order to do this successfully, the Petroleum Industry Act and any other enabling law would be invoked.

“When we were in government, we started this process. However, there were hiccups. We were unable to pass the legislation to encourage IOCs to partake in the

FG’s action inhumane, say lecturers

Last week it was reported that members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities received only half of their monthly salaries.

Some of these lecturers who spoke with The PUNCH said that the Federal Government’s action was inhumane, illogical and could lead to a massive brain drain in the educator sector as witnessed in the health sector.

Head of Department, Mass Communication, University of Lagos, Prof. Poju Tejumaiye, lamented that lecturers resumed work because they hoped the government would fulfill its promises.

He said, ‘‘It is so sad. We called off the strike in good faith but the government messed up, it is annoying giving us half salaries. Our job description was teaching, research, and community service and i was part of the team that went to Osun State during the election and that is community service.’’

He, however, said, ‘‘Since the Speaker of the House of Representatives has intervened; the Federal Government should let the sleeping dog lie. You cannot casualise lecturers’ job because we have to continue from where we stopped. Treating us this way brought back old wounds.’’

Also speaking, Prof. Adamu Yakub of The Department of Geography, Bayero University, Kano, condemned the actions of Minister of Labour and Employment, Prof. Chris Ngige, whom he said had taken the whole crisis personally.

‘‘What the government did is an attempt to provoke members of ASUU to be portrayed in a bad light. But since we have survived all these months without salaries we will surely continue to do. Minister of Labour has taken the issue personally and nobody in this country is ready to call him to order. The implication of all these is going to be on Nigerians in the next five years. Many young Nigerians are leaving the country. It is not easy replacing lecturers when they leave, and it seems the government and the people are not ready for education. If these go on, by the next session, all universities will increase their fees. That is when people will start wondering why ASUU is not saying anything because we are talking now but they think we are talking for ourselves.’’

Brighton hammer Chelsea 4-1 on Potter’s return

Graham Potter’s side of well-drilled, sharp passers and tactical opportunists left victorious to the acclaim of their supporters, although, unfortunately for Potter himself, that team happened to be the one he no longer manages.

This was the best of the Brighton that Potter created in three seasons when they punched above their weight against the big six – with ten wins against those clubs in 37 games under their former manager.

According to Telegraph, returning in charge of one of those big clubs, Potter will have recognised all the features of that approach under his successor Roberto De Zerbi whose players pounced on the vulnerability of some of Chelsea’s famous names and won the game with three first-half goals.

The home fans loved it – and their hostility towards Potter and the six staff who departed with him last month, as well as former player Marc Cucurella – increased with every goal.

Without a win since Potter left they may well have feared that the mojo that has kept this club afloat in the Premier League had departed with him. This was the reassurance that they still have the power to tweak the nose of the great and good, and for De Zerbi it will have been sweet indeed.

In the first half, the Italian coach attacked Potter’s 3-4-2-1 system ruthlessly with the wide areas yielding two own goals from Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Trevoh Chalobah as well as a first from Leandro Trossard.

Potter threw that formation away at half-time and went to a back four, and although his players created an early goal for Kai Havertz, Brighton held strong with a late rally that created a fourth for Pascal Gross in time added on for injuries.

It is the end of Potter’s nine-game unbeaten run at Chelsea, and a painful reminder that when the big clubs fall, they fall hard. Until last month Potter had spent his career as the underdog and this was a sharp experience of the opposite – delight taken in a bad defeat at the hands of

Tinubu will make Nigeria work, says Nnamani

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, was the most successful governor amongst the class of 1999-2007 set when democracy berthed after many years of military dictatorship, Senator representing Enugu East in the National Assembly, Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani has said.

According to him, Tinubu who was a former governor of Lagos State same time he was governor of Enugu State said governors from the class of 1999 may still be the nation’s top system builders and political reformers.

He maintained that “Tinubu will replicate the successes in Lagos across the country and has the capacity to revamp the economy and make Nigeria work for all.”

Nnamani who is also Chairman, Senate Committee on Cooperation and Integration in Africa/NEPAD, expressed these views in a statement he issued in Abuja on Friday.

He said the class of 1999 Governors had it rough in the beginning because most of them inherited a state that had all of its sectors in poor conditions as a result of several years of military rule.

Nnamani said, “All we had was pure joy in our electorates’ hearts because they had a democratically elected governor. From health to education to the economy and security, Lagos state and many other states were in turmoil as a result of years of military rule but Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu made the most progress out of all of us in reforms of various sectors, with Enugu State coming in second.

“This large progress came as a result of assembling 23 best brains in Lagos state to examine each sector of Lagos economy and provide a workable solution to its unique challenges”.

He said that in the education sector under Tinubu, “they discovered that out of the 7,877 classrooms that were available, 5,908 needed renovation,” adding that “with 682,000 students, the 7,877 classrooms were insufficient due to the UNESCO standard of 1:25 students per classroom.”

The statement reads, “The Asiwaju-led administration was tasked with figuring out how to add 5,768 more classrooms to the existing ones, saying that he rose to the challenges by erecting new elementary, junior secondary and senior secondary schools in Lagos between 1999 and 2007 to address this issue.

“Asiwaju-led government consequently embarked on human capital development to guarantee that pupils received the finest education possible with a series of staff training and development programs in various courses, seminars, and workshops.

“Numerous principals were sponsored to travel to Cape Town, Nairobi, and Auckland between 1999 and 2007. In total, more than 100 instructors received training in Nigeria and other French-speaking African nations.

“Provision of computer systems to the ministry, SUBEB, TEPO, and six school districts. In order to keep up with the most recent global educational trends, Lagos State under Tinubu funded the training of 1,400 teachers to teach the recently introduced family life health education by the National Council on Education.

In doing so, Nnamani said Lagos state became the first to adopt and execute FLHE program.

He said, the Tinubu-led government also had an effect on the tertiary institution as a backlog of more than 25,000 diploma, degree, and postgraduate certificates was cleared, adding that Lagos State University also implemented online course registration, fee processing, and result checking.

The Lagos State University College of Medicine, Nnamani said, was founded by Tinubu to provide top-notch medical training and facilitated the accreditation in 2005, which enabled the first class of medical doctors graduating in 2006.

Buhari returns to Abuja after World Bio Summit

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) on Friday morning returned to Abuja from Seoul, the South Korean capital, where he attended the first World Bio Summit 2022.

Buhari’s official jet touched down at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, minutes before 6 am, ending his six-day working visit to the Asian country.

While in Seoul, the President, most notably, witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for the rehabilitation of the Kaduna Refinery between the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and the Daewoo Group.

At the signing, Buhari said, “Daewoo Group has massive investments in the automobile, maritime and other sectors of our economy.

“I am also aware that Daewoo is currently engaged in the ex*****on of the NLNG train seven project and also constructing sea-going LPG vessels for NNPC and her partners.”

He also delivered a statement to world leaders at the Summit and held several of high-level consultations and bilateral meetings, especially one with his South Korean counterpart, Yoon Suk-yeol, and the Speaker of the country’s National Assembly, Mr. Kim Jin-Pyo.

He called for an expansion of the Nigeria-South Korea trade relations, urging investors to consider Nigeria as fertile soil for their business activities.

While meeting the immediate past Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, Buhari lamented that Nigeria is already experiencing the negative fallout of climate change seen in the flooding, desert encroachment and drought experienced in various parts of the country.

However, he expressed delight with the existing cooperation between Nigeria and the Republic of Korea especially in the area of energy supply, citing gas exports to the Asian country.

On his part, the former UN Chief who advocates Climate Change remediation and Chairs the Ban Ki-moon Foundation for Better Future sympathised with the President over the flooding.

Ki-moon called for more investment to improve education, avert environmental degradation and prevent diseases in order to meet the core Sustainable Development Goals.

Buhari also met with representatives of the Nigerian community in South Korea, urging them to be good ambassadors of Nigeria while there.

The President’s visit is premised on an earlier invitation to the Summit based on Nigeria’s selection with five other African countries by WHO and the European Union during the last EU-African Summit in Brussels, Belgium in February 2022 for mRNA technology transfer and Global Training Hub for Bio-manufacturing of vaccines in Africa

Those at the airport to receive the President include the governors of Katsina and Niger States; Aminu Masari and Abubakar Bello; Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mohammed Bello, and the Chief of Staff to the President, Professor Ibrahim Gambari.

Others were the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba; the Director-General of the Department of State Service, Yusuf Bichi and some other senior military and other security officers.

Sowore tackles Obi for inspecting Datti’s hospital

The African Action Congress presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, on Wednesday, tackled his Labour Party counterpart, Peter Obi, for his inspecting LP’s vice-presidential candidate, Dr Datti Baba-Ahmed’s hospital in Abuja.

Obi had earlier on his Twitter page on Wednesday shared pictures from his visit to the Baze University Hospital, describing the varsity owned by Baba-Ahmed as exemplary.

According to him, The institution is exemplary and reflective of a centre of excellence, and what domestic entrepreneurs and investors can contribute to nation-building.

He wrote, “This morning, I had the privilege of visiting the Baze University Hospital in Abuja and inspecting the facilities. Dr Datti Baba-Ahmed was on hand to show me around.

This institution is exemplary and reflective of a centre of excellence, and what domestic entrepreneurs and investors can contribute to nation-building.

“With several more facilities like this, medical tourism for Nigerians will be a thing of the past. This is simply awesome. – PO.”

But reacting to the visit, Sowore said he was surprised that Obi visited Baba-Ahmed’s hospital rather than the ‘university teaching hospital’ he allegedly built during his tenure as Anambra State governor.

He wrote, “I thought you & Datti would be inspecting the international standard “University Teaching Hospital” they claimed you built while you were governor of Anambra state and not a private hospital built by Datti, which obviously is not accessible/affordable to majority Of Nigerians!.”

Man United’s Greenwood in court for attempted r**e

Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood has been swept into court on Monday after being charged with attempted r**e, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault of a teenage student.

The England winger appeared in the dock of Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Monday wearing a grey sweatshirt and grey jogging bottoms.

Daily Mail reports that members of the footballer’s family sat in the public gallery as well as members of the press. The 21-year-old was flanked by two dock officers as he entered the court.

He spoke to confirm his name, date of birth and address at the beginning of the hearing, before the court heard the details of the charges against him.

Proceedings were then adjourned until later on Monday morning by District Judge Mark Hadfield, where a decision on his bail arrangements will be decided.

The player was first held in January over allegations relating to a young woman after images and videos were posted online.

He had been on bail since then, but was arrested in the Trafford area on Saturday for an alleged breach of conditions.

Shortly after 4pm on Saturday, the Crown Prosecution Service said it had authorised Greater Manchester Police to charge Greenwood.

According to Daily Mail, Janet Potter, who is the deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for the CPS North-West, said, “The Crown Prosecution Service has today authorised Greater Manchester Police to charge Mason Greenwood, 21, with attempted r**e, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

“All three counts relate to the same complainant.

“Specialist r**e prosecutors from CPS North West’s complex casework unit authorised the charges following a review of a file of evidence received from Greater Manchester Police.”

The attempted r**e is alleged to have taken place in October 2021.

The controlling and coercive behaviour relates to a period between November 2018 and October this year, while the charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm is dated December 2021.

Ms Potter added, “The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against the defendant are active and that he has a right to a fair trial.

“It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice those proceedings.”

Within hours of the allegations surfacing online at the beginning of the year, the forward – who has made one appearance for England – was suspended from playing or training with the Old Trafford club.

Nike suspended and later terminated its sponsorship deal with Greenwood, while Electronic Arts confirmed his removal from active squads on its Fifa 22.
