8,APRIL 2018
Sunday April 8, 2018
Divine Mercy Sunday
Vestment: White
Today’s Rosary: The Glorious Mysteries
The Gloria in excelsis (Glory to God in the highest) is said

Theme of the Sunday: How to Testify That Christ Is Risen. The words of Jesus, “Blessed are those who believe and have not seen,” that we read in the gospel are quite appropriate for us. Blessed are those who recognise the voice of the Master every Sunday in community celebrations. But to believe, people do not just need proclamation, they want signs, facts that prove beyond doubt that the Spirit of Christ is at work in the world. The first and second readings tell us that love for our brothers and sisters is the sign that will best show unbelievers that we have real faith in the Risen Christ.

Entrance Ant.
Like newborn infants, you must long for the pure, spiritual milk, that in him you may grow to salvation, alleluia.

The Gloria
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Collect
God of everlasting mercy, who, in the recurrence of the paschal feast kindle the faith of the people you have made your own, increase, we pray, the grace you have bestowed, that all may grasp and rightly understand in what font they have been washed, by whose Spirit they have been reborn, by whose Blood they have been redeemed. Through our Lord…

FIRST READING
“One heart and soul.”
A reading from the Acts of the Apostles Acts 4:32-35
The company of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things which he possessed was his own, but they had everything in common. And with great power the apostles gave their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. There was not any one needy among them, for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of what was sold and laid it at the apostles’ feet; and distribution was made to each as any had need

The word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM psalm118:2-4.15c-16b and 17-18.22-24 (R.1)
R. Give praise to the Lord, for he is good;
his mercy endures forever.
Or: Alleluia.

Let the house of Israel say,
“His mercy endures forever.”
Let the house of Aaron say,
“His mercy endures forever.”
Let those who fear the Lord say,
“His mercy endures forever.” R.

“The Lord’s right hand has done mighty deeds;
his right hand is exalted.
The Lord’s right hand has done mighty deeds.”
I shall not die, I shall live
and recount the deeds of the Lord.
The Lord punished me, punished me severely,
but did not hand me over to death. R.

The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone.
By the Lord has this been done,
a marvel in our eyes.
This is the day the Lord has made;
let us rejoice in it and be glad. R.

SECOND READING
“Whatever is born of God overcomes the world.”
A reading from the first Letter of Saint John (1 John 5 : 1-7)
Beloved: Every one who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and every one who loves the parent loves the one begotten by him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that overcomes the world, our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is he who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the witness, because the Spirit is the truth.

The word of the Lord.

ALLELUIA John 20:29
Alleluia. You believed, Thomas, because you have seen me, says the Lord; blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe. Alleluia.

GOSPEL
“Eight days later Jesus came.”
*A reading from the holy Gospel according to John (John 20: 19—31)
On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” Now Thomas, one of the Twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand in his side, I will not believe.” Eight days later, his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them, and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side; do not be faithless, but believing.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “You have believed because you have seen me. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe.” Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.

The Gospel of the Lord.

The Creed (I Believe)
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL
We do not see, yet we believe.

PRIEST: My brothers and sisters We are a new Christian family who share in the life of the Risen Lord. Let us ask God our Father for all the graces we need to live our Christian lives to the full.

READER:
For the Church, pause may she ever remain faithful, as did the Early Church, to the teaching of the Apostles, to the breaking of bread, and to the prayers. pause Lord, hear our prayer; and give us your saving grace we pray Oh Lord.

For the world in which we live, pause may our Christian witness to the resurrection be a leaven, through which all may learn to believe that Christ is truly risen. pause Lord, hear our prayer; and give us your saving grace we pray Oh Lord.

For those of wavering faith, pause may they believe, like Thomas, through touching Christ’s body, which is the Church. pause Lord, hear our prayer; and give us your saving grace we pray Oh Lord.

For this community of believers, pause may we, throughout this and every year, be witnesses to the power of the resurrection, by lives full of joy and hope. pause Lord, hear our prayer; and give us your saving grace we pray Oh Lord.

PRIEST: In silence we make our private intentions, in the name of the Risen Lord.

Father, increase our belief in the resurrection of your Son, and help us to be its witnesses to our world. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

REFLECTION
Giving them his Spirit, Jesus gives his Apostles the power to remit sins; thus he makes human beings participate in his triumph over evil and sin. The Risen Lord gives Thomas who did not believe the testimony of his fellow Apostles a lesson which is significant also for us: it is necessary to pass from vision to faith. The new mode of life of the Risen Lord means that he cannot be known as an earthly man, but as one who is present to us in the sacraments and in the life of the Church.

Today’s liturgy leads us to meditate on the new life of the primitive Christian community, and proclaims that each one of us is regenerated to a living hope through the Resurrection of Christ. Nearly every day we die to something: our ego, a dream, an ambition, an old idea-in order to rise with a greater ability to love, to welcome the reality around us, to be enthusiastic in continuing the adventure of our lives. The mystery of death and resurrection goes on. The Resurrection, therefore, is not only a fact of past history but also a present reality. In our life, after every crisis we begin again; after every rupture we rebuild. In this pilgrimage to our final death and resurrection the Christian must be characterized by faith in the Resurrection, being conscious that the present moment is a passage from death to life. The expression of this certainty is fraternal love.

Collect
Be near, O Lord, to those who plead before you, and look kindly on those who place their hope in your mercy, that, cleansed from the stain of their sins, they may persevere in holy living and be made full heirs of your promise. Through our Lord.

FIRST READING
“You shall be the father of a multitude of Nations.”
A reading from the Book of Genesis (Genesis 17.3-9)
In those days: Abram fell on his face; and God said to him, “Behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations. No longer shall your name be Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations. I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come forth from you. And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your descendants after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your descendants after you. And I will give to you, and to your descendants after you, the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.” And God said to Abraham, “As for you, you shall keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations.”

The word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM (Psalm 105:4-5.6-7.8-9 (R. 8a)
R. The Lord remembers his covenant forever.

Turn to the Lord and his strength;
constantly seek his face.
Remember the wonders he has done,
his marvels and his words of judgement. R.

O children of Abraham, his servant,
O descendants of the Jacob he chose,
he, the Lord, is our God;
his judgements are in all the earth. R.

He remembers his covenant forever:
the promise he ordained for a thousand generations,
the covenant he made with Abraham,
the oath he swore to Isaac. R.

VERSE BEFORE THE GOSPEL See Psalm 95:7d.8a
Glory and praise to you, O Christ. Today, harden not your hearts, but listen to the voice of the Lord. Glory and praise to you, O Christ.

GOSPEL
“Your father Abraham rejoice that he was to see my day”
A reading from the holy Gospel according to John, 8:51-59
Jesus said to the Jews, “Truly, truly, I say to you, if any one keeps my word, he will never see death.” The Jews said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham died, as did the prophets; and you say, ‘If any one keeps my word, he will never taste death.’ Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do you claim to be?” Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing; it is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say that he is your God. But you have not known him; I know him. If I said, I do not know him, I should be a liar like you; but I do know him and I keep his word. Your father Abraham rejoiced that he was to see my day; he saw it and was glad.” The Jews then said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” So they took up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple.

The Gospel of the Lord.

REFLECTION
What Jesus said was that Abraham saw his day and was glad. The Jews misunderstood him to mean that he saw Abraham physically. Abraham saw the day of Jesus in the descendants that God promised him in today’s First Reading. God sealed and everlasting covenant with Abraham to be God to him and to his descendants. Those descendants were rights there in the times of Jesus, and they were seeing the day of Jesus on behalf of their ancestor Abraham and on their own behalf. But, as Saint Paul would later say, the true descendants of Abraham are those who share in his faith in every age (Romans 4:16). They are the ones who have been the day of the Son of God, and are glad. They have subsequently become his disciples.

SUNDAY FEBRUARY 4, 2018
FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
VESTMENT: Green
TODAY’S ROSARY: Glorious Mystery
Tomorrow is the 7th Anniversary of the episcopal Ordination of Most Revd Antonio G. Filipazzi,
APOSTOLIC NUNCIO TO NIGERIA: 5th February, 2011.

Theme of the Sunday: Jesus and Suffering Humanity. When we reflect on the terrible problems some people have, we ask ourselves why it should be like this. In the first reading Job describes in dramatic terms the situation of humanity on earth. The gospel reading is a reply to the problems by Job. Jesus sees the sad reality of suffering and disease. He takes it on and exhorts his disciples to engage in bringing about the new world that he has just begun. In the second reading we have the example of Paul, a man who did not spare himself in his dedication to his mission, giving up his rights so as not to be an obstacle to the growth of the Kingdom.

Entrance Antiphon
O come, let us worship God, and bow low before the God who made us, for he is the Lord our God.

The Gloria (This hymn is either sung or said)
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. Amen.

FIRST READING
A reading from the Book of Job (Job 7: 1-4.6-7)
“I am full of tossing till the dawn. ”

Job spoke, saying: “Has not man a hard service upon earth, and are not his days like the days of a hireling? Like a slave who longs for the shadow, and like a hireling who looks for his wages, so I am allotted months of emptiness, and nights of misery are apportioned to me. When I lie down I say, ‘When shall I arise? ’ But the night is long, and I am full of tossing till the dawn. “My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle, and come to their end without hope. “Remember that my life is a breath; my eye will never again see good.”

The word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm147: 1-2.3-4.5-6 (R. see 3a)
R. Praise the Lord who heals the broken-hearted.
Or: Alleluia.

How good to sing psalms to our God;
how pleasant to chant fitting praise!
The Lord builds up Jerusalem
and brings back Israel’s exiles. R.

He heals the broken-hearted;
he binds up all their wounds.
He counts out the number of the stars;
he calls each one by its name. R.

Our LORD is great and almighty;
his wisdom can never be measured.
The Lord lifts up the lowly;
he casts down the wicked to the ground. R.

SECOND READING
A reading from the first Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians (1 Corinthians 9:16-19.22-23)
“Woe to me if I do not preach the Gospel!”

Brethren: If I preach the Gospel, that gives me no ground for boasting. For necessity is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not preach the Gospel! For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward; but if not of my own will, I am entrusted with a commission. What then is my reward? Just this: that in my preaching I may make the Gospel free of charge, not making full use of my right in the Gospel. For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a slave to all, that I might win the more. To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. I do it all for the sake of the Gospel, that I may share in its blessings.

The word of the Lord.

ALLELUIA Matthew 8: 17
Alleluia. Christ took our infirmities and bore our diseases. Alleluia.

GOSPEL
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark (Mark 1:29-39)
“He healed many who were sick with various diseases.”

At that time: Leaving the synagogue, Jesus entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. Now Simon’s mother- in-law lay sick with a fever, and immediately they told him of her. And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her; and she served them. That evening, at sundown, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons. And the whole city was gathered together about the door. And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. And in the morning, a great while before day, he rose and went out to a lonely place, and there he prayed. And Simon and those who were with him followed him, and they found him and said to him, “Every one is searching for you.” And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also; for that is why I came out.” And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.

The Gospel of the Lord.

Death Anniversary of Bishop Joseph Egerega of Bomadi (February 3, 2013)

FIRST READING
A reading from the first Book of Kings (1 Kings 3 :4-13)
“Give your servant an understanding mind to govern your people. ”

In those days: Solomon went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for that was the great high place; Solomon used to offer a thousand burnt offerings upon that altar. At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, “Ask what I shall give you.” And Solomon said, “You have shown great and merciful love to your servant David my father, because he walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart towards you; and you have kept for him this great and merciful love, and have given him a son to sit on his throne this day. And now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of David my father, although I am but a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. And your servant is in the midst of your people whom you have chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered or counted for multitude. Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil; for who is able to govern this great people of yours?” It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this. And God said to him, “Because you have asked this, and have not asked for yourself long life or riches or the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right, behold, I now do according to your word. Behold, I give you a wise and discerning mind, so that none like you has been before you and none like you shall arise after you. I give you also what you have not asked, both riches and honour, so that no other king shall compare with you, all your days.”

The word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm119:9.10. 11.12.13. 14 (R. 12b)
R. O Lord, teach me your statutes.

How shall a youth remain pure on his way?
By obeying your word. R.

I have sought you with all my heart;
let me not stray from your commands. R.

I treasure your word in my heart,
lest I sin against you. R.

Blest are you, O Lord;
teach me your statutes. R.

With my lips have I recounted
all the decrees of your mouth. R.

I rejoice in the way of your precepts,
as though all riches were mine. R.

ALLELUIA John 10:27
Alleluia. My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord; and I know them, and they follow me. Alleluia.

GOSPEL
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark (Mark 6:30-34)
“They were like sheep without a shepherd.”

At that time: The apostles returned to Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught. And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a lonely place, and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. And they went away in the boat to a lonely place by themselves. Now many saw them going, and knew them, and they ran there on foot from all the towns, and got there ahead of them. As he landed he saw a great throng, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.

FIRST READING
A reading from the second Book of Samuel (2 Samuel24:2.9-17)
“You have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God.”

In those days: King David said to Joab and the commanders of the army, who were with him, “Go through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, and number the people, that I may know the number of the people.” And Joab gave the sum of the numbering of the people to the King: in Israel there were eight hundred thousand valiant men who drew the sword, and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand. But David’s heart struck him after he had numbered the people. And David said to the Lord, “I have sinned greatly in what I have done. But now, O Lord, I pray you, take away the iniquity of your servant; for I have done very foolishly.” And when David arose in the morning, the word of the Lone came to the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying, “Go and say to David, ‘Thus says the Lord, Three things I offer you; choose one of them, that I may do it to you. ”’ So Gad came to David and told him, and said to him, “Shall three years of famine come to you in your land? Or will you flee three months before your foes while they pursue you? Or shall there be three days’ pestilence in your land? Now consider, and decide what answer I shall return to him who sent me.” Then David said to Gad, “I am in great distress; let us fall into the hand of the Lord, for his mercy is great; but let me not fall into the hand of man.” So the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning until the appointed time; and there died of the people from Dan to Beersheba seventy thousand men. And when the angel stretched forth his hand towards Jerusalem to destroy it, the Lord repented of the evil, and said to the angel who was working destruction among the people, “It is enough; now stay your hand.” And the angel of the Lord was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. Then David spoke to the Lord when he saw the angel who was striking down the people, and said, “Behold, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done? Let your hand, I pray you, be against me and against my father’s house.”

The word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 32: 1-2.5.6.7 (R. see 5a)
R. O Lord, forgive the guilt of my sin.

Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is remitted.
Blessed the man to whom the Lord imputes no guilt,
in whose spirit is no guile. R.

To you I have acknowledged my sin; my guilt I did not hide.
I said, “I will confess my transgression to the Lord.”
And you have forgiven the guilt of my sin. R.

So let each faithful one pray to you in the time of need.
The floods of water may reach high,
but such a one they shall not reach. R.

You are a hiding place for me;
you keep me safe from distress;
you surround me with cries of deliverance. R.

ALLELUIA John 10:27
Alleluia. My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord; and I know them, and they follow me. Alleluia.

GOSPEL
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark
“A prophet is not without honour, except in his own country. ”

At that time: Jesus came to his own country; and his disciples followed him. And on the sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue; and many who heard him were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get all this? What is the wisdom given to him? What mighty works are wrought by his hands! Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offence at him. And Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honour, except in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.”And he could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands upon a few sick people and healed them. And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went about among the villages teaching.

The Gospel of the Lord.
