University Management Receives Royal Blessings from Och’Idoma

The Management Team of Reverend Father Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi, led by the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Simon Terver Ubwa, on Wednesday, 3rd September, 2025 paid a courtesy visit to the paramount ruler of the Idoma Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Elaigwu Odogbo John at his palace in Otukpo.

Professor Ubwa explained that, the purpose of the visit was to strengthen the relationship between the university and the traditional institution, as well as to seek royal and spiritual blessings from the paramount ruler. He emphasized that the gesture was also to demonstrate solidarity with the revered leader of the Idoma Kingdom.

Expressing optimism about Benue State’s future, the Acting Vice-Chancellor highlighted that with a God-fearing Governor, His Excellency Reverend Father Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, and the support of traditional rulers like the Tor Tiv and the Och’Idoma, peace and development are achievable across the state.

In his response, the Och’Idoma expressed appreciation towards the university’s leadership, viewing the visit as a vital step toward fostering a sacred alliance between academia and traditional authority. He urged the university to uphold academic excellence, promote discipline, and prioritize the welfare of staff and students. Additionally, he encouraged efforts to bridge the gap between “town and gown” through collaboration and community engagement.

The traditional ruler also called on the striking unions—the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) to pursue dialogue as a more effective approach of addressing their demands. He specifically advised the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to refrain from embarking on an industrial action, citing concern for the future of the Benue child.

Professor Ubwa Demonstrates Leadership Capacity

The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Reverend Father Moses Orshio Adasu University, Professor Simon Terver Ubwa, showcased eloquence, maturity, and strong leadership during a live phone-in personality programme on Brothers FM, held on Thursday, 28th August, 2025.

During the session, Professor Ubwa lauded the Visitor to the University and Executive Governor of Benue State, His Excellency Reverend Father Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, for his unwavering support in advancing teaching, learning and research. He particularly commended the Governor’s initiative to expand access to university education through the proposed establishment of a campus in Adikpo, noting that such efforts would bring higher education closer to underserved communities.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor also expressed appreciation to the University's Governing Council for providing clear policy direction, assuring listeners that the Management remains committed to vigorously pursuing the institution’s Vision and Mission in fostering human capital development.

Professor Ubwa’s articulate and structured responses throughout the programme reflected his deep understanding of university governance and operations. He confidently addressed key issues affecting the institution, reinforcing his reputation as a frank and pragmatic leader.

Addressing the circumstances of his appointment, Professor Ubwa explained: "The substantive Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tor Joe Iorapuu, proceeded on his Annual and Overseas Leave with the approval of the Governing Council. I was appointed to act in his absence until his return."

One of the standout moments of the discussion was Professor Ubwa’s strong position on discipline and productivity. He emphasized a zero-tolerance stance toward laziness, underscoring his commitment to instilling a culture of hard work, accountability and performance among staff and students.

On the issue of staff misconduct, he noted that appropriate disciplinary action would be taken against any erring staff members but emphasized the need for proper reporting mechanisms, stating: "If they are not reported, what do you do?"

Looking ahead, Professor Ubwa shared his vision for repositioning the university for academic excellence and sustainable development. His strategic priorities include enhancing staff welfare, securing increased funding and introducing new academic programmes to expand the institution’s capacity and relevance.

He also highlighted the invaluable role of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) in driving infrastructure development and acknowledged its contributions to the university’s on-going growth.
