"As your kids step into their pre-teen , it becomes safe to start releasing your grip on them. You can start taking up the role of a friend and a coach with them.
As a friend; you become their confidant and cheerleader.
While as a coach; you motivate them.
You guide them to developing healthy goals and strategies. And are there to hold them accountable to them.
One thing I instinctively started doing with my kids as preteens, was that I started pouring into them the “Whys” and "Wherefores” of life.
This wasn’t a planned strategic move. It Just happened.
But thinking of it now, I realized that it was one of the gifts of the global lockdown of 2020. As we were forced to spend time with one another, I had the time and opportunity to answer many of their endless questions.
I saw myself picking on every occurrence, and explaining the principle behind it. This famously (or infamously, depending on who is telling the story) became known as the “Teachable Moments” between myself and the kids. That’s because, I will always start these unscheduled lectures with...."
