What Is a Coordination Compound?

How do metal atoms participate in chemical reactions? Metals are considered unique in that they can participate in ionic and covalent bonds. Ionic bonds occur when a negatively charged anion donates electrons to a positively charged cation (such as a metal), which is seen in compounds such as iron (II) hydroxide and chromium (III) phosphate. Most molecules that contain a metal cation are considered ionic compounds. However, metals can also participate in covalent bonds (which involves an anion sharing electrons with a cation) when they interact with multiple charged atoms in a complex. This dilutes the strength of each individual bond but strengthens the stability of the combined molecule.

Metals can participate in up to 6 covalent bonds at a time depending on their chemistry. These bonds can be with different molecules or can also all be within the same molecule. The latter case is known as a coordination compound (also known as chelating complexes), which refers to a compound (also known as a ligand) bound in several places around a central metal atom. They get their name from being made of coordinate covalent bonds, which refers to covalent bonds where both electrons in the shared electron pair originate from the same atom.
