Farmer Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago joined other stakeholders at a Breakfast meeting of the United States-Nigeria Council at the Yale Club, New York as part of the sideline events at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The US-Nigeria Council (USNC) is the premier organization dedicated to strengthening commercial and business ties between the United States and Nigeria, drawing equal permanent membership from both countries.

The Council builds and supports long-term business partnerships between US and Nigerian companies that drive innovation, entrepreneurship, technology transfer, job creation, and economic growth in both economies.

The event was hosted by Mr. Dele Alake, the Hon. Minister of Solid Minerals, Dr. Heineken Lokpobiri, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and (Oil), Mr. Will Steven’s, Deputy Assistant Secretary of United States Bureau of African Affairs, and other speakers.

Niger State located in the Nigeria mineral belt is strategically positioning herself as an extraordinary, untapped frontier for mining investment showcasing key deposits of gold, copper, lithium, lead, tantalite, beryllium, tin, and wolframite.

Governor Bago courts US Investors showcases Niger State’s Agricultural and Energy potential at UNGA 80 sideline event.

Niger State Governor Mohammed Umar Bago has intensified efforts to attract foreign investment, pitching Niger’s vast resources and strategic assets to American investors during a high-profile panel session held on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Speaking alongside Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, during a panel discussion, Governor Bago outlined Niger State’s unique investment opportunities, highlighting its hydroelectricity assets, expansive landmass, and favorable government policies. He stressed the administration’s determination to transform the state into Nigeria’s food basket and a continental hub for agricultural production within the next five years.

Bago pointed to partnerships with global companies such as John Deere, emphasizing Niger State’s readiness to leverage technology and modern farming practices. He also called on logistics companies to seize the opportunity of investing in Baro Port, a vital gateway for agricultural exports, and underscored the importance of infrastructure projects such as the movement of agricultural goods to Lagos by rail as examples of how his government is revitalizing the agricultural value chain.

The Governor further revealed investment prospects in the Bida Basin and its hydrocarbon deposits, assuring investors of a transparent and enabling environment for long-term returns.

The event was capped at the Cavista Gala Dinner, themed “Celebrating Business and Investment in Nigeria,” held at the prestigious Rainbow Room of the Rockefeller Center in New York City. Organized by the Corporate Council on Africa in collaboration with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, the dinner brought together U.S. and Nigerian business leaders, policymakers, and development partners committed to deepening investment flows into Africa’s largest economy.

Governor Bago reaffirmed Niger State’s commitment to sustainable partnerships, stressing that investments made today will not only feed Nigeria but also support Africa’s broader development agenda.

His Excellency, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State, joined global leaders from government, communities, philanthropy, and the private sector at the 2025 Gates Foundation’s Goalkeepers event in New York.

The event hosted by the Gates Foundation and held on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly promises to accelerate progress toward the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

Through its New Niger Vision 2055, the Niger State Government is prioritizing robust primary healthcare systems to prevent, detect, and treat childhood illnesses early. The government is also investing in capacity building for frontline healthcare workers to tackle future healthcare challenges effectively.

This year’s Goalkeepers event which showcased innovations in malaria control, long-acting HIV treatments, and enhanced vaccine delivery systems, with the potential to save millions of lives in the coming years, provides the Niger State Government an opportunity to pursue its vision to improve primary healthcare in earnest.

Amid declining global health budgets, Bill Gates announced a $900 million pledge to the Global Fund, emphasizing the importance of investing in people, science, and policies to drive solutions for a healthier future.
