MOKWA FLOOD VICTIMS SUPPORT GROUP AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS TO 88 STUDENTS, EMPOWERS 41 WIDOWS WITH SKILLS TRAINING
Mokwa, Niger State – Thursday, October 2, 2025
The Mokwa Flood Victims Support Group, a group made up of sons of Mokwa and chaired by Alhaji Ahmed Nasir, a retired Assistant Controller General of the Nigerian Customs Service, has extended educational and empowerment support to victims of the May 29 flash flood in Mokwa.
The group awarded full scholarships to 88 students, covering expenses for school uniforms, textbooks, and exercise books. Each beneficiary also received a new school bag to aid their learning. Representatives of the schools attended by the affected children were presented with cheques and the donated bags for onward distribution.
According to the group, the initiative is aimed at ensuring that children affected by the disaster are not denied the opportunity to continue their education. This support marks the first batch of beneficiaries, with more students expected to be captured in the next phase.
Beyond educational support, the group also rolled out an empowerment programme for 41 women, mostly widows, who lost their livelihoods to the flood. They will be trained in tailoring, cake baking, and soap making, equipping them with practical skills to rebuild their lives and sustain their families.
His Royal Father, Alhaji Muhammad Ali Shaba, the Ndalile of Mokwa, used the occasion to plead with the Federal Government to precipitate actions on the promises earlier made to the flood victims. He also appreciated the “Farmer Governor,” Umaru Bago, for the support he has provided to Mokwa since the disaster.
In his remarks, Chairman of the group, Alhaji Ahmed Nasir, expressed appreciation to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for sending his Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, to commiserate with the people of Mokwa after the tragedy. He further appealed to the Federal Government to fast-track the building of new homes for the displaced victims, noting that the Niger State Government has already provided land for that purpose.
Alhaji Nasir reaffirmed the commitment of the support group to stand by the victims and ensure that both children and women receive the help they need to recover and secure a stable future.
