NORTHERN GOVERNORS, TRADITIONAL RULERS RENEW PUSH FOR STATE POLICE TO TACKLE INSECURITY
Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, joined other Northern governors and traditional rulers at a joint security meeting in Kaduna, where stakeholders renewed their call for the creation of state police to tackle rising insecurity in the region.
Chairman of the Northern States Governors Forum and Gombe State Governor, Inuwa Yahaya, said insecurity in the North has grown into a national threat and emphasized that state policing is crucial for addressing the challenge. He identified underdevelopment, illiteracy, unemployment, weak infrastructure, and poor resource management as drivers of insecurity. He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for efforts in securing the release of kidnapped victims.
Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, highlighted ongoing strategies such as peer review mechanisms to improve governance, while the Sultan of Sokoto, Alh. Abubakar Sa’ad, assured the governors of continued support from traditional institutions.
The meeting, held at Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, had all 19 Northern governors and first-class emirs and chiefs in attendance.
