THE POLITICAL LIFE OF THE FORMER PRESIDENT MUHAMMAD BUHARI
Muhammad Buhari was born on December 17,1942,Daura,Nigeria. Buhari is a retired Nigeria army major general who served as the country’s military head of state from 31 December 1983 to 27 August 1985 and was democratically elected president in 2015 .
Buhari took military training in kaduna as well as in Great Britain ,India and the United States . He was involved in the military coup that ousted Yakubu Gowon in 1975 and was appointed military governor of north eastern state (now borno )that same year .He was appointed federal commissioner for petroleum resources by Gen. olusegun obasanjo,who became military head of state when Gowon’s successor .By 1977 Buhari had become the military secretary at supreme headquarters,which was the seat of government by September in 1979 he had returned to regular army duties and commanded a division based in kaduna.Buhari was chosen unanimously to be the new head of state led by military coup on December 31,1983. In 2003 he ran for president and was defeated by incumbent olusegun obasanjo of people’s Democratic Party (PDP).Buhari ran again and was defeated by PDP’s candidate,Umaru yar’Adua, he also stood in 2011 presidential election and lost to incumbent Goodluck Jonathan,also a PDP’s candidate . In 2014,the all progressive congress (APC)Party nominated Buhari to stand as its candidate in the 2015 presidential elections.His reputation for being incorruptible and his military background made him an attractive candidate he garnered the most votes some 2.5million more than his closest competitor Jonathan and was declared the winner he was inaugurated on may 29,2015.Buhari was named the APC candidate for February 16,2019 presidential election which was delayed till February 23,2019 buhari emerged victorious the winning reelection with some of 56 percent of the vote.
