Ibadan Leaders Blast Alaafin Over Ultimatum to Ooni on Dotun Sanusi’s Title

A fresh crisis is brewing in Yorubaland as Ibadan monarchs, Mogajis, Baales, and other traditional stakeholders have openly condemned the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, for issuing a 48-hour ultimatum to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, CFR, Ojaja II. The ultimatum, delivered through the Alaafin’s media aide, Bode Durojaiye, demanded that the Ooni revoke the chieftaincy title of Okanlomo of Yorubaland conferred on Engr. Chief Dotun Sanusi, Ibadan-born philanthropist and Bada Olubadan designate.

The Alaafin argued that only the throne of Oyo has the prerogative to bestow titles covering the entire Yoruba nation, insisting that the Ooni overstepped his bounds.

But Ibadan leaders have dismissed the move as provocative and an attack on Ibadan’s pride. The President of Ibadan Mogajis, Mogaji Asimiyu Ariori, and the Coordinator of the Ibadan Compound Peace Initiative (ICPI), Mogaji Nurudeen Akinade, jointly described the ultimatum as “irrational” and “divisive.”

“An attack on the Bada Olubadan designate is an attack on Ibadanland,” they declared. “Yoruba leaders must call the Alaafin to order before his irrational behavior causes avoidable division.”

The stakeholders recalled that the Okanlomo of Yorubaland title was conferred on Sanusi by the Ooni in 2020 at Ilaji Resorts during the unveiling of a social media platform, 2GEDA. According to them, the announcement was spontaneous and even the late Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, raised no objection.

They further emphasized that Sanusi enjoyed a cordial relationship with the late Alaafin, citing instances such as their meetings at social events, including the 70th birthday celebration of Chief Lekan Alabi at the University of Ibadan. Before his death, Oba Adeyemi had reportedly planned to personally commend Sanusi for his philanthropic works.

Chaos broke out on an Ibom Air flight from Uyo to Lagos as a female passenger assaulted a flight attendant and clashed with airport security at Lagos' Murtala Muhammed Airport. Viral clips show her being escorted away after the incident.
The NCAA has reminded passengers that air travel comes with responsibilities, not just rights.
This comes just days after Fuji star KWAM1 was banned from flying for six months following a separate altercation with ValueJet staff in Abuja.
Should airlines adopt a zero-tolerance policy for unruly passengers?

STOOL OF OLU OF EPE: LAGOS WARNS IMPERSONATORS

The Lagos State Government has issued a stern warning to individuals parading themselves as Oba-Elect to the throne of the Olu of Epe Kingdom following the demise of His Royal Majesty, Oba Shefiu Adewale, who joined his ancestors on Saturday, May 31, 2025.

In a statement signed by the Honourable Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, Mr. Bolaji Kayode Robert, the State Government called the attention of the general public, especially residents of Epe and environs, to the fact that no official approval has been granted to any individual to be recognised as the Olu of Epe, hence it is illegal to accord anyone such respect.

The Commissioner emphasised that the process of selection and installation of Traditional Rulers in Lagos State is governed by established legal and administrative procedures, which has not begun in this case.

Mr. Robert, therefore, advised Lagosians to disregard claims of legitimacy by this set of individuals and to refrain from engaging or giving them any traditional or official recognition.

While informing that the security operatives in the State have been directed to avoid breakdown of law and order in Epe, and to also carry out proper investigation to arrest and prosecute impersonators to the stool in line with the Lagos State Law of Obas and Chiefs, he said the Lagos State Government under the leadership of Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu remains committed to upholding due process and ensuring peace and order in the State.
