BE ACCOUNTABLE

“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body.” — 2 Corinthians 5:10

Authority without accountability can easily become power without restraint. Those entrusted with public responsibility must remember that leadership carries an obligation to give an account—not only to the people they serve and the institutions established to oversee them, but ultimately to God. Accountability therefore should not be viewed as an enemy of leadership; it is a safeguard for responsible leadership.

A healthy public system requires leaders who are willing to explain their decisions, submit to legitimate oversight, acknowledge mistakes, correct wrongdoing, and accept the consequences of their actions. When accountability is resisted, errors can continue unchecked, public trust can deteriorate, and institutions can become vulnerable to abuse. But when leaders welcome appropriate scrutiny, accountability can strengthen both the officeholder and the institution.

Today, we pray for a culture of accountability across Nigeria's public life. May those entrusted with authority never consider themselves above scrutiny, the law, or responsibility. May transparency, lawful oversight, honest reporting, and responsible correction become normal features of public service, helping to restore confidence and strengthen the institutions upon which national development depends.

RESIST CORRUPTING INFLUENCE

“Thou shalt not wrest judgment; thou shalt not respect persons, neither take a gift: for a gift doth blind the eyes of the wise, and pervert the words of the righteous.” — Deuteronomy 16:19

Integrity in public office is tested when pressure comes. Public officers may encounter offers of money, favours, contracts, appointments, relationships, threats, or other forms of influence designed to alter their judgment. The temptation may be subtle, but the consequence can be serious when decisions intended for the public good become shaped by private interests.

God's Word warns that improper gifts and partiality can distort even sound judgment. For those entrusted with public authority, integrity therefore requires the courage to establish boundaries and the discipline to refuse influences that compromise responsibility. A public officer must be able to say no when saying yes would betray the trust of the people.

Today, we pray for leaders who will remain upright when tested. May they have the discernment to recognise corrupting influence, the courage to resist it, and the wisdom to surround themselves with people who strengthen rather than compromise their integrity. May public decisions be guided by truth, law, competence, and the common good rather than by money, favour, fear, or personal relationships.

Public resources are entrusted to leaders for the benefit of the people. They include public funds, natural resources, government property, infrastructure, and the many assets through which a nation provides services and creates opportunities for its citizens. How these resources are managed reveals much about the integrity of those entrusted with them.

Faithful stewardship requires discipline, transparency, prudence, and a clear distinction between public resources and personal interests. When resources meant for public good are wasted, diverted, or misused, the consequences are carried by ordinary citizens—through weaker services, unfinished projects, lost opportunities, and diminished trust. But when public resources are managed responsibly, they can become instruments for development and human flourishing.

Today, let us pray for leaders who will treat every public resource as a trust. May those responsible for Nigeria's resources manage them with wisdom, restraint, transparency, and accountability, always remembering the people they are meant to serve. May God give our nation a culture of faithful stewardship that protects what belongs to the public and ensures that resources produce lasting value.

Trust is one of the most valuable assets in public leadership, yet it is easily damaged when words and actions consistently diverge. Public officers make promises, announce policies, communicate decisions, and give assurances to citizens. When commitments are treated casually or truth is sacrificed for political or personal advantage, confidence in leadership and institutions suffers.

Integrity requires more than avoiding outright falsehood. It requires leaders to speak truthfully, make commitments responsibly, communicate honestly when circumstances change, and take responsibility for their words. A leader who cannot keep every promise should have the courage to explain why; a leader who makes a mistake should have the humility to acknowledge it. Trust grows when citizens can believe that the words of those who lead them have meaning.

As we pray for Nigeria today, let us ask God to raise public officers whose words can be trusted. May they resist exaggeration, deception, empty promises, and misleading communication. Public office places significant resources and authority in human hands. The integrity of a public officer is therefore revealed not only by major decisions but also by how faithfully that person handles the opportunities, privileges, and resources entrusted to them. When public responsibility becomes a pathway to personal enrichment, the purpose of office is distorted and citizens bear the cost.

God calls those who serve others to exercise stewardship rather than exploitation. Public officers should be able to distinguish between what belongs to them and what belongs to the public. They should resist the temptation to use their position to accumulate personal wealth, reward favoured interests, or turn public resources into private benefits. The measure of faithful service is not what one can take from an office, but what one can responsibly give through it.

Public office is a trust. Those entrusted with authority are given responsibility over resources, institutions, decisions, and people that do not ultimately belong to them. The office may carry prestige, influence, and power, but its deeper meaning is found in stewardship. A public officer is called to serve faithfully, remembering that authority is given for a purpose and must be exercised for the good of those being served.

When public office is treated as personal property, the distinction between public responsibility and private interest begins to disappear. Positions can become instruments for self-preservation, privilege, patronage, or personal enrichment. But when office is understood as a trust, leadership takes on a different posture. The leader becomes more conscious of responsibility, more careful with public resources, more respectful of citizens, and more willing to place duty above personal interest.

As we begin this week on integrity in public office, let us pray for a renewed understanding of public leadership as stewardship. LEADERS WHO BUILD THE NATION

“And David shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart; and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands.” — Psalm 78:72

Leadership is not ultimately measured by the prominence of a leader's position but by the condition of the people and institutions entrusted to that leader. A leader's responsibility is not simply to manage the present but to build something that will endure. Godly leaders combine integrity of heart with skilfulness of hand—character with competence, conviction with capacity, and vision with faithful ex*****on.

Nigeria needs leaders who will think beyond their tenure and work beyond immediate applause. We need leaders who will strengthen institutions, develop people, create opportunities, protect national assets, improve systems, and make decisions with future generations in mind. Nation-building requires leaders who understand that roads, schools, hospitals, businesses, policies, institutions, and economies are important, but so are the people and values that sustain them.

As we conclude this week on godly leadership, let us pray for leaders who will leave Nigeria stronger than they found her. May leadership become a stewardship of the nation's future rather than an opportunity for personal enrichment. May God raise leaders whose integrity earns trust, whose competence produces results, whose vision inspires progress, and whose service creates foundations upon which future generations can build.
