WHERE DO I STAND?
Many friends, associates, well-wishers and more importantly, my supporters who led me to my recent election victory, a victory that was determined by the people, have inundated me with the question - WHERE DO YOU STAND? Some have even called me out on social media.
First, I appreciate it because it tells me that many value my opinion, which I earnestly understand comes equally with enormous responsibility. And that's exactly why I remained hesitant in declaring support, conspicuously, for anyone since after party primaries uptil now.
To be honest, I have been approached by individual candidates from various parties and have equally been invited to join several sub-national and national movements. I was even offered some positions in those movements.
However, to individual candidates who approached me, I gave one similar response - I will think about it. Concerning the movements, I declined joining any of them because most of them are party based, and I am not a card carrying member of any political party.
Secondly, the wave of defections after the primaries, in most cases, reminded me of the ugly past where many of them went back to their former party immediately they got the victory they wanted, a condition that shows clearly that the defections were never to change things but to keep their stomach continually fed. I have become personally very cautious with defectors, although I must agree that some current defections, especially at the national level, and especially before party primaries were quite reasonable.
After a careful examination of things, the current political trajectories, the disappointments we got from many that we supported in the past on the basis of political party, I have decided to join the movement represented in the flyer below. I also call on all compatriots to join this movement. This becomes even more important when we understand that no political party in Nigeria has been able to develop a clear-cut ideology, but the law has made it somehow mandatory for aspirants to go through the parties. Hence, both the bad and ugly are forced into unholy unions. It is therefore now our responsibility to sift the good ones wherever they are and support them.
I SHALL BE SPEAKING MORE ABOUT THIS MOVEMENT SUBSEQUENTLY, BUT THE CENTRAL THEME IS =
"IT IS NOW ABOUT CANDIDATES NO LONGER POLITICAL PARTIES" - THAT'S WHERE I NOW STAND.
I am Dr. A. A. Agbo.
