Update: Enugu Airport Concessioned for Thirty Years

The Federal Executive Council has approved the complete business case for a 30-year concession of Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu.

Keyamo said, “Most of the smaller airports apart from the major ones are running at a loss. The profits we make from Kano, Lagos, and Abuja often go into keeping these others alive.

“That has always been the plan of this administration—to concession some airports to private individuals and entities so they can run them profitably.”

Therefore, Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, will be run by a private firm for 30 years, for efficiency and effectiveness!

NA STATISTICS WE GO CHOP? - Tinubu, 2022

Nigeria's economic woes are no secret. When President Tinubu asked Nigerians, "NA STATISTICS WE GO CHOP?" He acted like a regular Nigerian politician other than an accountant. Possibly, now, politics is over and he has recognized just how much economic statistics affects the growth and fall of an economy. Currently, the reality is stark for Nigerians: Nigerians are suffering, and the economy is bleeding.

In a bid to boost the economy's worth, the Tinubu government rebased Nigeria's GDP. However, after much effort from the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics, the economy's value still hovers around $245 billion. This is a far cry from the over $500 billion recorded in 2014, the last time the GDP was rebased. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank put Nigeria's current GDP at a more sobering $188 billion.

The inclusion of the informal sector by the Federal Government in the GDP calculation was expected to paint a rosier picture, but the truth remains: Nigeria's economy is still struggling. With a staggering population of over 200 million people, poverty is rampant. The GDP per capita is a meager $1,000, a telling indicator of the economic hardship faced by many Nigerians.

In contrast, Botswana, a smaller country in Southern Africa with a population of just 2.5 million people, boasts a GDP of $21 billion. More impressively, its GDP per capita stands at a respectable $7,000 - a figure that highlights the vast disparity between Nigeria's economic performance and that of its peers.

The economic growth forecast for Nigeria is equally concerning. Despite President Tinubu's promise of 12% GDP growth during the 2023 election, the actual growth rate has remained sluggish at 3%. Economists predict that the economy won't grow more than 4% in the next three years. This slow growth trajectory means Nigeria will struggle to meet the needs of its rapidly growing population, which doubles every 30 - 50 years. The implications are dire: without exponential growth, Nigeria's economic woes will only worsen.

After resigning from Molusi College due to disagreements over religious practices, Solarin embarked on a mission to establish a secular school that would provide quality education to students from all walks of life.

In 1956, he founded Mayflower School, a bold experiment that would go on to become one of Nigeria's most prestigious secondary schools. Despite initial challenges, including being blacklisted by the Christian Council of Nigeria, Solarin persevered, driven by his vision of an education system that was inclusive and merit-based. Three years later, he opened Mayflower Junior School, further solidifying his commitment to education.

Solarin's outspoken criticism of Nigeria's military governments, however, made him a target for persecution. He was imprisoned multiple times, including 48 hours under Yakubu Gowon's administration and 18 months under Buhari-Idiagbon's regime. Yet, Solarin refused to be silenced, and his courage in the face of adversity inspired a generation of Nigerians.

In 1977, Solarin took another bold step by establishing Student's Second Home, a boarding house that would accommodate over 2,000 students from public high schools in Ikenne town. This initiative was a testament to his dedication to providing opportunities for young people to access quality education.

Throughout his life, Solarin's legacy extended beyond education. He was a champion of social justice, a fierce critic of corruption, and a passionate advocate for human rights.
