Breaking News: Over 10 Confirmed D**d Many others injured and feared d**d as rice distribution causes stampede in Okija Anambra!!

An unconfirmed number of residents of Okija community in Anambra state have reportedly lost their lives in a stampede.

TheCable understands that the stampede occurred on Saturday morning during an event for the distribution of rice.

Victims of the stampede are mostly women.

Multiple social media videos seen by TheCable show lifeless bodies laying on the ground after the incident.

Some victims have reportedly been taken to nearby hospitals.

Charles Aburime, the chief press secretary to the Anambra governor, confirmed the incident when contacted.

Aburime said the state government is monitoring the situation and would soon release a statement.

The incident is coming a few days after over 35 people, mostly children, died during a stampede at a carnival in Ibadan, Oyo state capital.

The Anambra stampede is the second rice distribution-related mishap in 2024.

President Bola Tinubu has canceled all official engagements in Lagos today to mourn the victims of recent stampedes in Abuja and Anambra State. The tragedies claimed ten lives, including children, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, and an unspecified number of casualties during a rice distribution event in Okija, Anambra State, on Saturday morning.

In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, it was revealed that one of the canceled events included Tinubu’s planned attendance at the 2024 Lagos Boat Regatta. The president was scheduled to observe the boat parade from his Queen’s Drive residence in Ikoyi. However, after receiving briefings on the incidents, he decided to withdraw, even as dignitaries, Lagos officials, and white cap chiefs had already gathered for the event.

The president expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and urged state governments and relevant authorities to enforce stricter safety measures at public events. He described the incidents as “deeply troubling,” drawing parallels to a similar tragedy in Ibadan, Oyo State, and emphasized the need for stricter oversight to prevent future occurrences.

Tinubu offered prayers for the peaceful repose of those who lost their lives and a swift recovery for the injured. He also called on event organizers to prioritize safety by implementing proper protocols to safeguard attendees.

“As we celebrate this season of joy, our hearts are heavy with grief for those mourning the loss of their loved ones. May they find divine comfort and healing,” the president said.
