The Black Race and the Leadership Question: Insights from the Chancellor's 70th Birthday Public Lecture

Dr. Oyedepo, celebrated as a visionary leader, has spent decades cultivating an educational revolution in Africa, driven by the belief that Africa can—and must—realize its potential. His lifelong commitment to the cause of transformational leadership formed the backdrop of the lecture, which was delivered by Professor Peter Okebukola, a former Executive Secretary of Nigeria's National Universities Commission (NUC).

Addressing Africa's Leadership Crisis

In his opening remarks, Vice Chancellor Professor Abiodun H. Adebayo underscored the relevance of the lecture’s theme. He highlighted how Africa, despite its rich human and natural resources, remains hindered by a deficit in visionary and credible leadership. Quoting Dr. Oyedepo’s often-repeated maxim, "It doesn't have to be white to be right," Professor Adebayo called attention to the untapped potential of African leadership, and how Covenant University aims to change this narrative by raising a new generation of leaders.

The Call for Transformational Leadership

Professor Okebukola’s lecture, “The Black Race and the Leadership Question,” was a deep dive into the historical, social, and political factors that have shaped the leadership landscape in Africa. He pointed to ineffective governance structures and corrupt practices as key barriers to progress. In contrast, he extolled Dr. Oyedepo’s leadership as an example of what can be achieved when a leader is committed to transformative ideals rooted in education, integrity, and vision.
