Why Labubu is ugly, expensive, and unstoppable.
Everywhere you turn now, someone is unboxing Labubu or posting it in their room like it’s the main character. And yet, most people don’t really know what Labubu is or where this funny-looking thing even came from😂💔.
But this is not just an internet toy. Labubu actually has a full story, and once you know it, you may start to look at it differently like I do 😂. Or worse, you may even find yourself wanting one too🙃😂💔.
Labubu was actually created by a Belgian-Chinese artist named Kasing Lung. He was not trying to create something beautiful. In fact, the whole point of Labubu was that it didn’t fit the standard idea of "CUTE".
Kasing Lung's style of drawing was far from the usual sweet and cuddly animals. He was drawn to characters that looked different, ugly, weird, a little scary, and full of personality. That’s where Labubu came from. The character was part of a storybook world called 'The Monsters'.
Even though Labubu looks like it belongs in a horror movie for kids, it actually represents something deeper.
Kasing Lung wanted to show that you don’t have to be beautiful to be loved. In fact, sometimes the ugliest looking things turn out to be the most beautiful and most wanted, just like we are seeing now.
Labubu was later brought to life as a toy by a company in China called POP MART.
What made Labubu different from other toys was not just its face but the way it was sold. POP MART introduced it through blind boxes, meaning when you buy one, you don’t know what version you’ll get until you open it and that’s when Labubu became unstoppable.
This mystery made people crazy. Some were getting Pirate Labubu, others were getting Angel Labubu, Skeleton Labubu, Fairy Labubu and so on. People started collecting them like they were treasure.
