*FORMER OTARU RENOUNCES TRADITIONAL TITLE, RETURNS TO PURE ISLAM*
*Upogoro, Okene LGA, Kogi State | 9th August 2026*
The reconciliation between a servant and his Lord has led *Mallam Salihu Obaro Omeiza of Upogoro* to take a historic step. He has voluntarily relinquished his traditional title, rejected all worldly benefits attached to it, returned entitlements linked to deities, and reverted fully to pure Islam by renouncing the Taru traditional institution.
*Sheikh Luqman Abuyatama was in Saudi Arabia performing Hajj* at the time Mallam Salihu reverted to Islam. Upon his return, the Sheikh paid a solidarity visit to his home and expressed great joy and gratitude to Allah for this guidance.
The Sheikh described this kind of guardian as special — a divine making by Allah, redirecting him to His path. He said forfeiting an elevated status and worldly benefits in search of Allah’s pleasure is truly remarkable.
He prayed that Allah affirm Mallam Salihu’s faith, accept his return, protect him, and bless him and his family.
This return to Islam was made possible through the guidance of his children — both alumni of *Sheikh Luqman’s Darul Arqam School*.
The children engaged their father with utmost diplomacy and respect, without compromising the honor due to him. They applied the very manners they were taught by Sheikh Luqman Abuyatama.
*Adayi Mallam Salihu Obaro Omeiza*, in his remarks, expressed gratitude for the solidarity visit to his home. He said it humbled him and strengthened his resolve to remain steadfast. He prayed that Allah bless Sheikh Luqman *and the entire Muslim ummah*.
In conclusion, the Sheikh also offered prayers for the entire Upogoro community where the Taru institution is based. He extended special prayers to the son of Upogoro and father of Kogi State today, *His Excellency, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo*, for success in the leadership responsibilities entrusted to him. He prayed for Allah’s blessings upon his predecessor, *His Excellency, Alhaji Yahaya Adoza Bello*, whom Allah used to choose Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo as a worthy successor.
In an interview with the Arqam Media Team, his son, *Ustadh Suleiman Abu Naeem* — Coordinator representative of the Upogoro Zone of Al-Falaah Society for Islamic Propagation and Humanitarian Development — recounted how he, his brother *Salih Abdullahi Abuwaliya*, their beloved mother, and *Dr. Obaro* patiently and collectively convinced their father to leave the traditions of Taru for the sake of Allah.
Ustadh Suleiman Abu Naeem recalled that in the early 2000s, he and his brothers embraced *Ahlus Sunnah Aqidah* under the spiritual guidance of *Sheikh Luqman and Imam Musa Galadima*, and their father stood firm with them.
“Our father accepted and encouraged us. He supported our studies at the Sheikh’s Darul Arqam school and donated land where we built our mosque which also serves as our Islamiyya for our students. That center has produced many Qur’an graduates till today,” he said.
He added that due to his father’s love for Ahlus Sunnah and his support for the Sheikh’s students, the community began referring to him about 8 years ago as _“Otaru Ahlus Sunnah”_ when the government appointed him as *Otaru of Andisa of Ehebe Clan*.
“People knew how he stood with Ahlus Sunnah in Upogoro, so they used the name to mock him. But to us, his children, it was unacceptable in Islam to combine a traditional title with Sunnah. We explained to him that Islam does not permit mixing traditional beliefs with Tawheed. At the same time, we accorded him full respect and appreciated his support for Ahlus Sunnah long before he took that title,” Ustadh Suleiman Abu Naeem explained.
He described his father as a man of courage who sacrificed an upgraded second-class chieftaincy title for the sake of Islam.
“This is a promotion for Islam, for Muslims, and for the entire community,” he said.
*May Allah accept from him, make him firm upon the truth, forgive his past, and reward him with the highest Jannah. Ameen.*
