Tetanus is a serious bacterial infection caused by _Clostridium tetani_, usually entering the body through wounds or cuts. It leads to painful muscle stiffness and spasms, often called “lockjaw.” The bacteria produce a toxin that affects the nervous system, causing symptoms like jaw cramping, muscle rigidity, and difficulty swallowing.

*Key points:*

🔷Cause:Bacterial spores found in soil, dust, and animal f***s.
🔷Symptoms: Muscle stiffness, spasms, “lockjaw,” difficulty swallowing.
🔷Prevention:Vaccination (DTaP, Td, or Tdap) and proper wound care.
🔷Treatment:Medical care, including antitoxin, antibiotics, and supportive therapy.

Tetanus isn’t contagious but can be life-threatening without prompt treatment.
