WORD FOR TODAY
THE WORD IS NIGH THEE
TEXT: Romans 10:8 – “But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach.”
The Word of God is not distant, nor hidden in a faraway place that man cannot reach. It is not confined to the heavens that one should say, “Who shall ascend for us?” Neither is it locked away in the deep that one should ask, “Who shall go down for us?” Rather, it is near, right in your mouth and in your heart. God has made His Word accessible so that no one has an excuse not to hear, believe, and obey.
When Moses spoke to Israel in Deuteronomy 30:14, he declared that “the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it.” This demonstrates that God’s intention has always been for His Word to dwell within us. The heart receives it, and the mouth confesses it. When faith takes root in the heart, confession brings it to life.
THE POWER OF THE WORD WITHIN
The closeness of the Word means that every believer has the divine potential to live by it. The Word is not meant to be a distant theory or a sacred text read only by priests, it is a living force meant to guide our speech, shape our thoughts, and strengthen our actions.
When the Word of God becomes alive in a man’s heart, it transforms his entire being. Joshua was commanded to meditate on the law day and night so that his way would be prosperous and successful (Joshua 1:8). Likewise, when we keep the Word near (through meditation, prayer, and confession) it becomes a source of wisdom and direction in our daily walk.
PRACTICAL EXAMPLES FROM THE SCRIPTURES
1. Mary, the Mother of Jesus: When the angel spoke God’s Word to her, she received it in her heart and declared, “Be it unto me according to thy word” (Luke 1:38). The Word she believed became flesh in her womb.
2. David: In Psalm 119:11 he said, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” David understood that internalising the Word is the key to living a righteous life.
3. Jesus Christ: During His temptation in the wilderness, Jesus overcame Satan by speaking the Word that was within Him (Matthew 4:4, 7, 10). The Word was near Him (in His mouth and heart) and it became His weapon of victory.
The Word being near means that every time we face temptation, confusion, or fear, we have the power to speak the truth of God into that situation. When your heart is filled with His Word, your mouth will confess faith instead of fear, victory instead of defeat, and hope instead of despair.
APPLICATION TO DAILY LIFE
Let the Word of God be near you always. Read it daily, meditate upon it, and speak it with faith. It is not enough to hear sermons or carry a Bible, what matters most is having the Word take root in your spirit. Let it dwell richly in you as Colossians 3:16 commands, so that in every circumstance, you can respond as one who carries the living Word inside.
LET US PRAY:
Jehovah, we thank Thee for Thy living Word that dwells richly within us. We thank Thee for making Thy truth so near, that we may live by it daily. Grant us grace, through Jesus Christ, to keep Thy Word in our hearts and to confess it boldly with our mouths. Let the Holy Spirit quicken the Word within us, bringing light where there is darkness and faith where there is doubt. Help us to walk in obedience and victory as doers of the Word and not hearers only. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
