The First TV in Africa — How Nigeria Lit Up the Continent 📺🇳🇬

October 31, 1959, a date that marked a turning point not just for Nigeria, but for all of Africa. While much of Europe was still building its national television networks, and countries like South Africa would not have TV until 1976, Nigeria was already broadcasting to the masses.

The Visionary Behind the Screen

Chief Obafemi Awolowo, then Premier of the Western Region, envisioned a tool to educate and inform his people. Refusing to wait for colonial authorities, he spearheaded the creation of WNTV (Western Nigeria Television) in Ibadan, making it the first television station in Africa.

A Milestone in African Media

First in Africa: WNTV proudly claimed this slogan, positioning Ibadan as a pioneering hub for media on the continent.

Education First: Unlike later stations focused on entertainment, WNTV prioritized educational programming, broadcasting lessons to schools across the Western Region.

Cutting-Edge Infrastructure: A powerful transmitter on Mapo Hill extended signals as far as Lagos, demonstrating Nigeria’s technical foresight.

In 1959, Nigeria wasn’t just participating in progress, it was leading it. From the first television station to the Liberty Stadium, the country was already showcasing the innovation and ambition that would define its post-independence era.

Ondo: What Next?

Ondo City has made remarkable progress in recent years, achieving significant milestones that have long been overdue. One of the most notable achievements is the long awaited upgrade of Adeyemi College of Education to a full fledged university. This accomplishment is a testament to the resilience and determination of the Ondo community. Additionally, the federal government has approved the dualization of the Ore-Ondo-Akure road, a critical infrastructure project that will enhance connectivity and boost economic activities in the region.

While these achievements are commendable, this is not the time to slow down. We must continue to press for more developmental projects. The federal government is currently led by a man from our region, and the state government received overwhelming support from our community in the last election. It is only right that we leverage these political advantages to demand further improvements. Moreover, our local government chairmen in both LGAs should be held accountable and encouraged to facilitate more grassroots development despite limited funds, can contribute in small but meaningful ways. Maintaining the environment through tree planting, landscaping, streetlight maintenance, and proper waste management should be priorities at the local level.

A glance at the developments in Akure within the same period should serve as a source of inspiration.

Between 2023 and now,the Akure community successfully lobbied for a teaching hospital attached to the Federal University of Technology, Akure. Additionally, a National College of Aviation has been approved for establishment in Akure, and the College of Agriculture in the city is on the verge of being upgraded to a university. Furthermore, the Ilesha-Akure-Benin road has also received approval for dualization. These developments highlight the importance of relentless lobbying and strategic demands for infrastructural growth.

As we engage in politics, we must also be tactical about governance. Every opportunity should be utilized to advocate for more developmental projects. One key area to focus on is the proposed industrial hub along Akure road. We should push for the establishment of a National Agro Processing and Storage Center within this hub, as well as increased investment in rural road construction to support agricultural activities. Additionally, access to farming loans should be encouraged to boost food production and economic stability.

Furthermore, the Ondo community should advocate for more state government investment in UNIMED, Ondo, with the goal of transforming it into a world-class medical center. A well-funded and internationally recognized medical institution will not only provide quality healthcare services but also create employment and attract medical tourism.

In conclusion, while Ondo City has achieved commendable progress, there is still much to be done. We must continue to demand more from the federal and state governments, as well as our local government representatives. By strategically pushing for infrastructure, healthcare, education, and economic development, Ondo can rise to greater heights. Let’s keep the momentum going and strive for the best.

Oba Adesoji Aderemi Ooni of Ife the 1st Governor of Western Region and 49th Ooni of Ife (The Great Atobatele)

Truly some people are born to lead, just a few people are born to rule. This is the case of Oba Titus Martins Adesoji Tadeniawo Aderemi the great Atobatele 1.

He was born on the 15th of November 1889, during the turbulence of the Yoruba civil war to Prince Gbadebo of the Osinkola ruling house of Ile Ife and iyaafin Adekunbi of Ipetumodu, Ife north local govt, Daughter of Olu-oje Descendants in Agbonu's compound Ipetumodu in the absence of his warrior father, who was on a war expedition; he was named Adesoji Aderemi.

On Prince Gbadebo's return, Adesoji's older sister Ibiyemi, unable to contain her excitement of the news had to be held back from initial physical contact with her war-weary and juju laden father. Until he had rid himself of his protective war attire by appeasing his gods, then was it safe to embrace his family. Prince Gbadebo being an Ifa priest, presented his newborn to his Ifa Oracle demanding to know what the future holds for the new baby Aderemi. The father was told to bow to his son. The Ifa predicted that baby Aderemi, was going to wear the crown of his ancestors, that his reign will be known far and wide, and he will come in contact with strangers in far away places. Prince Gbadebo told his wife to get coral beads to dress his son as was customary for royalty. In the belief of the oracle, mother-Adekunbi went into protective mode, always washing Aderemi in herbs, until he outgrew her methods. Having lost his father at eight years of age, he was subsequently raised by his mother. The emergence of Christianity dissuaded his mother from the traditional family worship of Ifa, hence his enrollment at the new local Christian primary school of St Phillips, Ife, as one of the first students in Ife to attend a local school in 1901.

The young Prince Aderemi had a vision. His objection to farming with his much older and beloved brother, Papa Prince Adeyemo, led to his enrollment at the Anglican primary school at Aiyetoro, Ile-Ife. Under the tutelage and mentor-ship of Revd Canon J Adejumo, aka Baba Aiyetoro, who later became his father in law. He had an affinity for the law profession and could have travelled to the United Kingdom for the law program, with his contemporaries of the day - Bashiru August. Not Aderemi, he had a date with destiny - the Ife Crown. Despite losing his father Prince Gbadebo so early, he kept his ambition on track, thanks to the beady eye of his mother.

Adesoji Aderemi was known as a very wealthy man and had a large family of many wives and children. One of his children was the civil servant Tejumade Alakija. During the colonial era, the Oba Ooni gained a considerable amount of power due to the colonial policy of indirect rule and being labelled a first class Oba among traditional rulers in Yoruba land. The policy of indirect rule was used to ensure native awareness and consultations about colonial policies affecting the regions. The British leaned on existing native political structures and hierarchy, particularly the Nigerian traditional rulers, for political consultation and tax collection. Later on, the Ooni with the consent of the leading Yoruba political leaders used his position to close the gaps of exploitation of divisional differences among Yorubas and tried fervently to rally the Yoruba towards a common goal. In 1962, the king acting as governor, used his power to remove the premier of the region, sensing the premier did not have the support of the majority members of the House of Assembly. The event escalated the political rivalries in the region.

On the 2nd of September, he became the 49th Ooni of Ife. He was widely dubbed the first literate Ooni. Oba Aderemi quickly acclimatised himself to his new environment, at 40, he was the youngest of the Yoruba Obas at the time. Oba Aderemi with the aid of the traditional Ife elders, (Obalufe, Obajio, Obaloran, Wasin, Obalaye, Akogun, Jagunosin, Ejesi), formed the administrative set up that transformed the ancient town in the next decade. Oba Aderemi championed Education during his reign as Ooni, which was the sentiment behind the foundation of Oduduwa College in January 1932. Oba Aderemi personally funded the construction of the Secondary School, a model institution at the time; Oba Aderemi believed that the surest way to facilitate and sustain modernization is through education.

A great landmark of his reign pertaining education was the foundation of the University of Ife, which many attributed to Oba Aderemi’s influence in the ruling Government, with the Ooni tenaciously proposing Ife as the ideal location for the foremost institution to be situated, Oba Adesoji Aderemi located Itaodan/Ajebamidele for his mother's Family member from Agbonu's compound Ipetumodu (Adekunbi ipetu) and Send Chifetancy tittle to Apetumodu palace from Agbonu's compound (Chife Ikolaba of Ipetumodu) Itaodan/Ajebamidele was later collected by Oba Foloruso the Obalufe of Ife during the time of Ooni Oba Okunade Sijuwade. Oba Aderemi constructed the main building of his palace, which remains a mainstay of the Ife palace to date - with its unique colonial-style. Ooni Aderemi served as the permanent chairman of the council of Obas from 1966-1980.

His reign as Ooni was remarkably peaceful, with his innovative ideas in business creating a pathway to wealth for a lot of the natives, especially in the agriculture industry, where he was a business leader himself. On the 3rd July 1980 the great King bade the world farewell but even though he is no more, his legacy continues.

OUTCOME OF PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION REFLECTS THE WISHES OF ELECTORATE -GOV AKEREDOLU

•Says Committees Have Been Set Up To Meet Aggrieved Presidential Candidates

Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Rotimi Akeredolu Aketi, SAN, CON has said the outcome of last Saturday’s Presidential Election was a reflection of the wishes of the electorate.

The Governor described the election as the freest ever held in the country.

He spoke to newsmen in Abuja at the International Conference Centre, venue of the presentation of Certificate of Return to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as President-elect and the Vice-President-elect, Senator Kashim Shetima.

The Governor disclosed that a Committee of Elders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) would soon begin to meet with co-contestants of the President-elect in a bid to assuage their loss in the just concluded Presidential Election.

He stressed that every aggrieved person will be met for reconciliation.

"The President-elect has set up committees to meet with the gentlemen who contested in the election for us to start the healing process. I belong to one of the committees. We are going to meet them and appeal to them so that we can work together.

"This is an election that was not padded. People who voted were counted, that is the way I see it. It’s not one which shows millions of votes. You can see the candidates, everyone won 12 states each, it has never been like that before.” Governor Akeredolu said.

The Governor, while describing the massive votes recorded by candidates of APC in the Presidential and National Assembly Elections in Ondo State as attestation to the love of the people for his administration, expressed happiness that his people willingly supported his clamour for a Southern President after President Buhari's two-term tenure.

"Ondo People are progressives and we will always at least be on the side of progressivism. From the onset we are at the forefront of clamour for a Southern President and so we have to put everything we had into it and we got support that is why we are able to make it". He said.
