When my friend got married, she and her husband didn’t have much. They rented a small room in a crowded compound. Their mattress was on the floor, their kitchen was basically one burner, and there were months when they had to calculate whether to buy food or pay a bill 💵 . But they had plans. Her husband worked wherever he could find work loading goods, driving when someone needed a driver, helping at building sites. My friend started selling snacks from the front of their room. At first, she would make a small tray of chin-chin and buns and walk around offices and shops trying to sell them. Some days she came home with almost everything she left with. There were days she cried because she felt embarrassed 😞
One afternoon, she returned home and found her husband sitting outside. He had been sent home from work. He looked at her and said, I don’t know how long I can keep doing this. She sat beside him. For a while, neither of them spoke. Then she opened the small nylon bag containing the day’s sales. She counted the money 💰. It was ₦7,800. She gave him ₦5,000. Use this for transport tomorrow. Go and look for something.
He refused. You need it for the business. She pushed the money into his hand. Then we’ll start again tomorrow. They didn’t suddenly become rich. The following months were still 😣. Sometimes the landlord reminded them about rent. Sometimes they borrowed money from friends. Sometimes they ate what they could afford, not what they wanted. But they kept trying.
My friend eventually started taking small food orders.
Her husband found steadier work. Then, slowly, something changed. People started referring customers to her. One order became five. Five became twenty. Years later, they moved into their own apartment. It wasn’t a mansion. There was no expensive car waiting outside. But on the first night in that new place, my friend sat on the floor because they hadn’t bought enough furniture yet. She looked around and started crying 😢. Her husband thought something was wrong. She smiled through her tears. I just remembered that room we started from. They both laughed. They knew they still had a long way to go. But for the first time, they could look around and say. At least, we didn’t remain where we started. And maybe that’s what starting from nothing really looks like.
Not overnight success. Not suddenly becoming rich.
Just two tired people refusing to give up every time life knocks them down.
