The crowning of Haile Selassie I in 1930 was a moment that shifted the course of history far beyond the borders of Ethiopia. While he was a dedicated member of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, his coronation carried a deep spiritual weight for people of African descent across the globe, especially in the Caribbean. For many, his rise to power was seen as the fulfillment of a prophecy made by Marcus Garvey, who had urged his followers to look toward Africa for the crowning of a Black king. This belief eventually laid the foundation for the Rastafarian movement, where many came to view the Emperor not just as a political leader but as a divine figure and the reincarnation of Jesus.
The name of the movement itself is rooted in his identity, as he was known as Ras Tafari Makonnen before he took the throne. His titles were grand and reflected a lineage that many believed could be traced back to King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, including King of Kings and Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah. Throughout his reign, Selassie became a global symbol of Black sovereignty and resistance against colonial forces. Whether it was his famous speech at the League of Nations warning the world about the dangers of fascism or his efforts to unite the continent through the Organization of African Unity, his legacy remains a powerful bridge between ancient traditions and the modern struggle for independence and identity.
