Origin of the name Ika

(Marshall 1936, Whiting 1936, Simpson 1936, Denton 1937, and Stanfield 1936), the present Ika people have not always been the only group known by the name, Ika. ๐Ÿ‘ˆ Forde and Jones (1967) used the term Ika for a wider community, which included the present Ika group. Ika was used by Forde and Jones (1967) to represent the inland parts of the four groups that make up the western Igbo group (Aniocha, Oshimili, Ika and Ukwuani) found in present Delta State away from the shores of the river Niger. The remaining members of these groups that are on the shores of the river Niger i.e. Asaba, Aboh and others were referred to as Riverain Igbo (Forde and Jones 1967: 49-50). Within this Ika group the present Ika community was classified as Northern Ika along with Aniocha and Oshimili while the Ukwuani group was classified as Southern Ika (Forde and Jones 1967). However the origin and meaning of the name Ika and when only the present Ika community and their language began to be known and referred to by that name, which they retain until today, is not clear.

Ika Structure: Clans, villages (Ogbe), quarters (Idumu) and family units (nmunne)

As has been stated above, there are eleven clans and a metropolis that make up the Ika collective group, which I refer to as the Ika community. Except for the Idumuesah clan the rest ten are today also referred to as kingdoms as they have the hereditary kingship traditional system. The kings are known and referred to by the title of Obi (king), however the king of Agbor clan has changed his title from Obi to Dien for reasons not clear to me at this time. The following are the eleven clans and a metropolis that make up the Ika community:

1. Agbor clan,
2. Owa clan,
3. Abavo clan,
4. Ute-Okpu clan,
5. Ute-Ogbeje clan
6 Umunede clan,
7. Akumazi clan,
8. Igbodo clan,
9. Otolokpo clan,
10. Mbiri clan,
11. Idumuesah clan
12. Orogodo/Boji-Boji

I WON'T DENY MY IGBO IDENTITY -President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo

The President-General of the Igbo socio-political organisation, โ€˜Ohanaeze Ndigboโ€™, Senator John Azuta Mbata said nothing will ever make him deny his Igbo identity.

He went on to describe recent criticisms against him by some ignorant elements in Ikwerre land as a lack of exposure and understanding.

The late chief David Edebiri the Esogban of the Benin kingdom, Said their ancestors came with Prince Oromiyan from Ife (Uhe).
Their ancestors and origin is Uhe ( Ife ) thatโ€™s why the family greet (Lauhe ) when they greet they greet to reflect their ancestors where they are coming from. The greeting acts as an identification mark as to which family/origin you come from.

Before this Time who are the people occupying that geographical area called idu?

Most of our people Ndi Ika who believe the false information about them coming from Benin are doing that in support of an information that is not true ๐Ÿ‘ˆ

You should ask questions to the people occupying that geographical area before the show up of Ndi Benin from ile ife๐Ÿ‘ˆ

Ndi Ika and other igbo speaking families were together in building Benin kingdoms then before the problem that resulted everyone leaving the kingdom, which we call today migration ๐Ÿ‘ˆ

Ezechima is one of the igbo families that left Benin because of the problem that resulted then๐Ÿ‘ˆ The Late Chief David Edebiri, the Esogban of Benin kingdom in one of his interview said it that Ezechima is not from Benin but his from igbo speaking of Anioma๐Ÿ‘ˆ

Today their young boys and ladies are on the Internet misleading the general public with false history how Ika , ikwere, Aniocha ukwuani are from Benin ๐Ÿ‘ˆ

The decision then by our ancestors to link their clan to Benin kingdom was not born out of origin because our ancestors has no connection with them๐Ÿ‘ˆ it is due to business transaction, because at that time Benin was a business hub with the foreigners ๐Ÿ‘ˆ

We will talk more, but listen to the video below ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡

ABOUT Igbo History

Pre-Colonial Life:

Pre-colonial Igbo political organization was based on semi-autonomous communities, devoid of kings or governing chiefs. With the exception of towns such as Onitsha, which had kings called Obis, and places like Nri and Arochukwu, which had priest kings known as Ezes, most Igbo village governments were ruled solely by an assembly of the common people. Although title holders were respected because of their accomplishments, they were never revered as kings, but often performed special functions given to them by such these assemblies. This way of governing was immensely different from most other communities of Western Africa, and only shared by the Ewe of Ghana. Igbo secret societies also had a ceremonial script called Nsibidi.

Igboโ€™s had a calendar in which a week has four days. A month has seven weeks and thirteen months a year. The last month had an extra day. They also had mathematics called Okwe and Mkpisi and a saving and loans bank system called Isusu. They settled law matters by oath-taking to a god. If that person died in a certain amount of time, he was guilty. If not, he was free to go, but if guilty, that person could face exile or servitude to a deity.

Post-Colonization:

The arrival of the British in the 1870s and increased encounters between the Igbo and other Nigerians led to a deepening sense of a distinct Igbo ethnic identity. The Igbo also proved remarkably decisive and enthusiastic in their embrace of Christianity and Western education. Under British colonial rule, the diversity within each of Nigeria's major ethnic groups slowly decreased and distinctions between the Igbo and other large ethnic groups, such as the Hausa and the Yoruba became sharper. The novel โ€œThings Fall Apart by Igbo author Chinua Achebeโ€, is a fictional account of the clash between the new influences of the British and the traditional life of the Igbo.
