This sunset reminded me that everything on earth has an expiry date.
Even the sun we see today will set.
I was reflecting on a Bible passage today and it won’t leave my heart.
"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.
But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal."
- Matthew 6:19-20
And today, God used a real-life story to drive that scripture home for me.
There’s a man I know here in our area. An aged man.
Every single morning, he steps out with cartons of sneakers and slippers to hawk around.
No shop. No office. No salary.
His pay depends entirely on how many sales he makes that day. If there are no sales, there is nothing for him.
Rain or shine, sun or dust, he is out there.
At his age.
The first time I saw him I just felt compassion. My heart was heavy.
"Why is a man this old still struggling this much?" I kept asking myself.
So today I decided to ask someone who is very close to him.
And what I heard broke me.
This same man was ONCE extremely wealthy.
He had multiple shops in Lagos.
He was constantly flying in and out of China for importation and business deals.
He owned a house. He was married and living comfortably.
So what happened?
He trusted someone.
One of his colleagues. Also one of his best customers.
At a time when he couldn’t travel, he gave this man about 40 MILLION NAIRA to help him buy goods on his behalf.
He trusted him fully, believing it was a safe business exchange.
But that trust was betrayed.
The man collected the money and disappeared. Till today, no contact. No trace.
That single incident wiped everything away.
Shops closed. Business collapsed. House issues. Everything scattered.
And now, that same man who once moved millions, is on the street every morning, hustling for daily bread under harsh weather.
I sat there speechless.
This is exactly what Jesus was talking about.
Earthly treasures are fragile.
Businesses can crash.
Money can vanish.
People we trust can fail us.
Moth will destroy. Rust will eat. Thieves will steal.
But there are treasures that no one can take:
1. A relationship with God
2. Wisdom
3. Character
4. Purpose
5. People who are God-fearing and faithful
I’m not saying don’t chase wealth or build businesses. Please do.
But build it on the right foundation.
Build it with God.
Build it with wisdom.
And pray for the right people around you, because one wrong "trusted friend" can cost you 40 million and your peace.
This story reminded me to be grateful, to be diligent, and to be prayerful.
To build wealth, yes, but to also build treasure in heaven that no one can touch.
May God give us wisdom to handle money.
May He surround us with faithful people.
And may we never forget where our true security lies.
