Tinubu Approves Construction Of 600-capacity Hostels For Abuja Law School

President Bola Tinubu has approved the construction of a 600-capacity hostel complex for the Nigerian Law School in Abuja. The President also gave the green light for a new road to be built, linking the Body of Benchers Secretariat in Jabi District to Nile University.

The President also directed the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to begin work immediately on the two new hostels, each with a capacity of 300 students. The projects are to be executed under "emergency consideration," according to a statement released on Tuesday by the minister's media aide, Lere Olayinka.

The new accommodation, which includes one 300-capacity female hostel and a separate 300-capacity male hostel, is intended to provide much-needed housing for students at the Abuja campus of the Nigerian Law School.

In addition, the road connecting the Body of Benchers Secretariat with Nile University is expected to help ease traffic congestion, particularly on the route leading to the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger Withdraw From ICC

The West African states of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger have announced their withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC), declaring they no longer recognise its jurisdiction.

The three military-led governments accused the court of arbitrarily prosecuting war crimes and serving as an “instrument of neo-colonialist repression.” They stressed, however, their commitment to protecting human rights in accordance with their own values.

This is not the first time the countries have taken such a stance. They had previously justified their withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Human rights groups and UN experts have accused the armed forces and allied militias in Mali and Burkina Faso of committing war crimes during operations against Islamist insurgents, in addition to atrocities carried out by the militants themselves. National authorities say investigations ar toe ongoing, though none have produced public conclusions.

The ICC, based in Hague, has been prosecuting serious crimes such as genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity since 2002. While all EU countries are members, the United States, Israel, and Russia are not signatories.

Despite abundant resources like gold and uranium, which are largely extracted by European and North American companies, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger remain among the world’s least developed nations. Situated in the Sahel on the southern edge of the Sahara, they also sit on major smuggling and migration routes toward Europe.

Between 2020 and 2023, military leaders seized power in all three former French colonies after elected governments failed to quell Islamist insurgencies. Since then, the juntas have distanced themselves from Western partners and drawn closer to Russia for military cooperation.

Barcelona's Aitana Bonmati, Wins Third Successive Ballon d'Or Feminin

Barcelona star, Aitana Bonmatí has once again been crowned the best female footballer in the world, securing the 2025 Ballon d’Or Féminin.

This marks her third consecutive Golden Ball, an achievement that cements her status as one of the greatest players of her generation. The Spanish midfielder edged out strong competition from her Barcelona teammate Mariona Caldentey, England striker Alessia Russo, and fellow Barça icon Alexia Putellas to claim the prize.

Bonmatí, who was visibly emotional as she accepted the award, reflected on the significance of the moment and her journey
“Good evening. I’m going to improvise a bit. Third time here in a row, I don’t really know what to say. Incredible. Thanks to France Football first of all for giving me the third,” she said.

“It could have easily gone to any of you. I think the level has been high this year. My teammates here have had a great year. To receive this from Iniesta, one of my idols since I was little, and also with Xavi present... my football is partly thanks to them.”
The midfielder also celebrated the progress women’s football has made, particularly with the Ballon d’Or now offering the same level of recognition as the men’s award.

“This is the first year we have the same prizes as the men’s team, and that’s appreciated. Equality is something we’ve been demanding for a long time. Today we’ve achieved it,” she said.

Bonmatí ended her speech with heartfelt gratitude to her club, teammates, family, and supporters:

“To Barça, to Joan Laporta, the president and the board, teammates, staff... we didn’t achieve this alone. It’s thanks to a tremendous collective effort. Thank you to Barça, the club of my life. I can’t forget my people, my friends, my family, and all the people who help me become a better player and a better person.”

Her third straight Ballon d’Or win further strengthens Barcelona’s dominance in women’s football and adds to her growing legacy as one of the sport’s most decorated players.

Ballon d’Or: Nigeria’s Chiamaka Nnadozie Ranked Fourth-best Goalkeeper In The World

Super Falcons star Chiamaka Nnadozie has earned global recognition after being ranked the fourth-best goalkeeper in the world at the 2025 Ballon d’Or awards ceremony in Paris.

The Nigerian international, who plays with Paris FC in France, was named among the top five in the prestigious ranking for the inaugural Women’s Yashin Trophy — an award dedicated to the best female goalkeepers in the world.

England and Chelsea shot-stopper Hannah Hampton made history by becoming the first-ever winner of the award, after an outstanding year that saw her inspire the Lionesses to Euro 2025 glory and lead Chelsea to a domestic treble. Germany’s Ann-Katrin Berger claimed second place, while Spain’s Cata Coll finished third.

For Nnadozie, the recognition is another milestone in a fast rising career. She first gained worldwide attention at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, where she produced a Player of the Match performance in Nigeria’s shock victory over co-hosts Australia. Since then, she has established herself as one of Africa’s finest goalkeepers and a key figure for both club and country.

Hampton’s landmark award capped a remarkable season in which she kept 13 clean sheets in the Women’s Super League, shared the Golden Glove, and played a decisive role in England’s European success.

Ousmane Dembélé Wins 2025 Ballon d’Or

Paris Saint-Germain forward, Ousmane Dembélé has been crowned the winner of the 2025 Ballon d’Or, football’s most prestigious individual award, at a glittering ceremony in Paris on Monday night.

The French international capped off an extraordinary 2024/25 season with 35 goals and 16 assists in all competitions, playing a decisive role in PSG’s historic campaign. His brilliance helped the club achieve a long-awaited first UEFA Champions League triumph, while also securing the Ligue 1 title and the Coupe de France to complete a famous treble.

Dembélé’s win is especially remarkable given the adversity he faced earlier in his career, battling persistent injuries and inconsistency that once threatened his potential. At 28, he has now reached the pinnacle of world football, fulfilling the promise many saw in him as a teenager.

The PSG star finished ahead of Barcelona’s 17-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal and other elite nominees, cementing his place among the game’s greats. His triumph not only adds to his personal legacy but also reinforces PSG’s growing global dominance, with the French champions also recognized as the Best Team of the Year at the ceremony.

Rivers People Deserve To Know The Agreement Between Tinubu & Fubara — Activist, Ann-Kio Briggs

Niger Delta rights activist, Ann-Kio Briggs, has said that the people of Rivers State deserve to know the terms of agreement between Governor Siminilayi Fubara and President Bola Tinubu before the six-month emergency rule ended in the state.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Briggs argued that the people of the state had the right to know what was agreed behind closed doors, warning that silence could erode the governor’s credibility.

“We are the people who have paid the greatest price in all of these things, and to not be aware of the decision which will affect us, and therefore, we can’t gauge the extent to which these decisions will affect us, it becomes very difficult to flow with the politicians,” she said.

She warned that withholding details of the pact was “unacceptable” to people from Rivers State.

“It’s just an impossible situation where we have found ourselves. We don’t know what the President has insisted on, we don’t know what was agreed upon, and where that leads the people of Rivers State. So, we need to know what was agreed on,” she said.

Briggs also joined calls for Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), who served as the state’s sole administrator during the emergency period, to account for public funds spent under his watch.

“The state funds spent during the emergency rule belonged to the people of the state and should be accounted for,” she said.

Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and members of the state assembly were suspended on March 18, 2025, following the declaration of emergency rule over political instability. Fubara resumed office on September 17, 2025, after the emergency rule was lifted by President Tinubu.

Taliban Bans Books Written By Women From Afghan Universitites, Bans Human Rights And 17 Other Courses

The Taliban has banned books written by women from being used in Universities in Afghanistan.

The Order, issued in late August 2025, also prohibits the teaching of 18 subjects that Taliban officials say clash with Sharia law and their policies. Among the prohibited subjects are human rights, sexual harassment, Gender and Development, Women’s Sociology and The Role of Women in Communication and other subjects that had offered some of the last academic space to talk about women’s lives.

Science-related titles like Safety in the Chemical Laboratory were also struck off for being “anti-Taliban”.

The decree also blocks 310 books authored by Iranian writers or publishers, with officials admitting it is an attempt to stop “Iranian influence” in Afghan classrooms.

Since the Taliban’s return to power four years ago, girls have been barred from studying beyond grade six and midwifery courses were shut down in 2024.

In recent weeks, the consequences of Taliban law were seen in a different tragedy: women trapped under debris during the Afghanistan earthquake went without help because men unrelated to them were forbidden to touch them.

Afghanistan has a population of about 43 million — nearly half of them women. Around 2.5 million girls aged 12 and above — the age group barred from secondary school and universities and remain out of classrooms.
