THE NEED FOR FOOD, BASIC HEALTH AND CLEAN ENVIRONMENT FOR THE AFRICAN CHILD
2025 Childrenās Day Message from the Executive Director of MACS Foundation
TODAY, as we gather to celebrate Childrenās Day 2025, my heart is filled with both hope and a deep, sobering reflection. It is a moment to honor the innocence, resilience, and dreams of children everywhere. But it is also a day that reminds us of the silent cries and visible struggles of countless children across Africa, and particularly in Nigeria.
When I look back, I do so with a heavy heart and a deep sense of concern. Our children have suffered far more than they should ever have to. The dreams they carry are often threatened by the harsh realities they face daily. From the widespread issue of food insecurity that leaves young bodies malnourished and stunted, to the heartbreaking reality of children who roam the streets instead of walking confidently into classrooms, the burdens on our young generation are too numerous, and too heavy.
Many children in Nigeria still lack access to quality education as the very key that unlocks the future. Many suffer from poor health due to inadequate primary healthcare, and even more are forced to grow up too soon, shouldering responsibilities that should never be theirs to bear. The root causes of these challenges are not hidden. Poverty, inequality, conflict, insecurity and a lack of political will to prioritize childrenās welfare continue to hold our continent back.
Yet, amidst this darkness, there is hope. That is our driving force and a call to action.
As we celebrate Childrenās Day today, we must rise together and affirm a collective truth. Children are not just the leaders of tomorrow, they are the heartbeat of today. The world we desire tomorrow must begin with the investments we make in them today.
In Nigeria, we celebrate Children's Day with heavy hearts as we see children being slaughtered like chickens daily in different parts of the country. The hungry and sick children being camped in the Internationally Displaced Peoples (IDP) Camps, those begging on the streets and those out of school.
At MACS Foundation, we believe every child deserves to live, they deserve enough food to thrive, not just survive and have access to basic health. We are passionate about creating safe environments where children can laugh, play, and dream without fear. We will continue to push for sustainable agriculture that will lead to food sufficiency, we will continue to advocate and drive quality healthcare, and work tirelessly until no child is left behind.
We cannot do it alone. We need every stakeholder, especially governments to take the lead, NGOs, civil society, families, and communities themselves to rise with a sense of urgency. The time for lip service is over. We must act boldly and intentionally to build a future where no child suffers for being born in Africa.
Let us make today more than just a celebration. Let us promise ourselves that we will do more, we will give more, and we will fight harder for our children because they matter, because they are worthy, because they are the future we care about.
Happy Childrenās Day to every boy and girl across Nigeria and Africa. Your dreams matter. And we are here to help you achieve it.
