TRENDING NOW:
EMAGES – THE DESIGNERS Issue: Editor’s Letter

We are just days from the official release of the EMAGES Magazine. It is our third issue but our second renaming, rebranding, and redesigned issue since we decided to fine-tuned content and features, graphic designs application on print. Since its inception in 2002, we knew we wanted to continue to innovate ourselves, and naturally, the magazine was the next step. With the mindset of still maintaining the print quality of EMAGES, gives color, expressing the tempo of standard and professional journalism on print. We wanted to reinvent ourselves while at the same time maintaining the essence of what made us special. As we embarked on this journey of building a multifaceted multimedia organization, we knew we were going to encounter the hardships that current and past multimedia firms have dealt with but we did not let that deter us from continuing the work. We understand there is a void to fill and we are here to fill it. We are here to be the young publication that started in the university to becoming the giant multimedia organization in the world.
One of the sustaining fictions of being a magazine editor is that you somehow determine the publication you produce. Strictly speaking, of course, this is true: It is editors who generate the ideas for the stories, who assign and edit the text and the photos, who style the shoots and design the layouts and fact-check and copy-edit, it would not exist without us. Yet at some undefinable point in the process, the relationship between the creator and the created shifts, and when you look through the finished product, you are invariably surprised. It is only when you see it as a whole that you are at last able to recognize the patterns, the obsessions; the questions, that you wove into its weft, sometimes only semi-consciously. Anyone who makes things for a living understands this sensation: the realization that the object you thought you were making, be it a book or a shirt or a film, is sometimes not, what is made. Therefore, what were we thinking of and obsessing about, the staff of EMAGES and the entire Editorial Department, when we were compiling this issue? For one, about how fashion designers not only mirrors themselves but also are often deliberately oppositional to, the cultural moment in which it has conceived? Still, as the No1 Africa magazines in the world and will continue to pull more trends in years to come and it makes us unique today. Therefore, you will find in all the newness of this issue, Emages is still the only African platform general-interest monthly magazine to cover all of African identity and heritage, the Emages that publishes more features stories on African.
