๐จ ๐ธ๐ด Somalia has officially announced a ban on all Israeli-linked vessels transiting the Bab Al-Mandeb Strait as of April 2026. This decision was communicated by Somalia's envoy to Ethiopia and the African Union, Abdullahi Mohamed Warfa, who warned that any country undermining Somalia's territorial integrity would face such restrictions.
The ban is a direct response to Israel's formal recognition of Somaliland as an independent state in late 2025 and the subsequent appointment of an Israeli ambassador to the breakaway region in April 2026.
Analysts have questioned Somalia's actual capacity to enforce a blockade, noting that the federal government lacks a functional navy and air force. Furthermore, the coastlines directly overlooking the strait are controlled by Somaliland, which has rejected Mogadishu's authority in the matter.
Reports suggest Israel is seeking a strategic presence in Berbera, Somaliland, including a military base to monitor the Red Sea and counter the resistance in Yemen. Somalia's President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has stated the government will confront any unauthorised foreign military presence on its territory.
