Soldiers Bar Traditionalists from Awujale's Muslim Funeral.

By Adewale Omo Olubo,
All Day TV News.

In a dramatic turn of events, soldiers intervened to prevent traditionalists believed to be members of the Osugbo cult from attending the Muslim funeral of the late Awujale of Ijebu land, Oba Sikiru Adetona, on Monday. The incident caused tension as the traditionalists arrived at the royal father's residence, prompting apprehension among the mourners.

The controversy surrounding the burial rites of the late monarch stems from a long-standing dispute between traditionalists and the government over the Oba and Chiefs Law of 2021. This law stipulates that traditional rulers can be buried according to their religious disposition, which in this case was Islamic rites. However, the Osugbo cult members opposed this provision, arguing that royal fathers should be buried according to traditional practices.

Oba Sikiru Adetona, who reigned for 65 years, was a highly respected monarch known for his wisdom, integrity, and commitment to the development of Ijebu land. His passing was met with an outpouring of tributes from prominent figures, including former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Governor Dapo Abiodun, and Senator Solomon Adeola.

The funeral, which was attended by dignitaries from across the country, was held at the monarch's private residence in Ijebu Ode. Islamic prayers were led by the Chief Imam of Ijebu land, Sheikh Muftaudeen Ayanbadejo, before the remains were interred around 6 pm on Monday. The burial was conducted according to Islamic rites, in line with the monarch's religious beliefs.

- Governor Dapo Abiodun: Described the late Awujale as a "pride of Ijebu land" and a "proud son of Nigeria" who devoted his 65 years of reign to serving the people. He praised the monarch's wisdom, integrity, and commitment to progress.
- Alhaji Aliko Dangote: Hailed the late Awujale for his love for the people, irrespective of their background. He described the monarch as a man of influence who prioritized service to the people.
- Senator Solomon Adeola: Paid tribute to the late Awujale's leadership qualities, describing him as a monarch who spoke truth to power and was not afraid to take a stand on important issues.
- Segun Osoba: Recalled the late Awujale's wisdom and his efforts to move Ijebu land and the country forward.

The Osugbo cult is a traditional institution in Ijebu land, responsible for judicial and executive functions. While some view the Osugbo cult as an important part of Ijebu tradition, others see it as an outdated institution that needs to be reformed.

In recent years, there have been tensions between the Osugbo cult and the government over issues such as burial rites and installation of traditional rulers. The government has sought to modernize these practices, while traditionalists have resisted these changes.

The burial of the late Awujale of Ijebu land has highlighted the complexities of traditional and modern practices in Nigeria. As the nation mourns the loss of a respected monarch, it also grapples with the challenges of balancing tradition and progress. The incident serves as a reminder of the need for dialogue and understanding between traditional institutions and government authorities.
