Army, police, NSCDC in show-of-force in Osun over planned protest

SEVERAL vehicles conveying men of the Nigeria Army, Police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps on Thursday engaged in show of force ahead of the proposed nationwide protest by some groups in commemoration of the annulled June 12 presidential election on the streets of Osogbo, Osun State.

Security men in many trucks blowing siren were seeing moving along some major streets in Osogbo early in the morning.

The men, who were fully armed, were sighted along Osogbo/Iwo road, Oke Fia Area, as well as MDS Area, moving in a long convoy.

They were also seen around Oja Oba, Osogbo/ Ilesha Road, Ogo Oluwa and Ayetoro Areas.

While the security men in large number were on the streets in the Osun state capital, many residents that were leaving homes for their respective places of work, after observing the unusually large number of security men, openly expressed concern about the development.

When contacted, the spokesperson of Osun State Police Command and the NSCDC, Yemisi Opalola and Daniel Adigun, respectively, said the exercise was a ‘show of force’ to rein in those planning to foment trouble in the state.

Opalola, who said the command had beefed up security across the state, further explained, “It is a show of force to warn anybody who is planning to cause trouble in the state under the guise of protest. We are ready for the task.”

Meanwhile, the Osun State Government has said it would not allow anyone hide behind the protest to disrupt the peace of the state.

Special Adviser on Security to state governor, Abiodun Ige, who was responding to inquires on the large presence of security operatives on the streets of the state capital on Thursday, said whoever that was planning protest must do that within the ambit of the law.

Ige said, “On June 12, there is freedom of expression, freedom of movement as enshrined in the Constitution, but when people say they want to protest, they should know that some people will be planning evil.

“We don’t want anything called protest to be hijacked; it is a peaceful protest for you to say your mind, but that should not be hijacked by hoodlums.”

The Oluwo of Iwo, Abdulrosheed Akanbi, has expressed the frustration of an average Nigerian, he suggested death penalty for bandits and other gunmen arrested for threatening the security of Nigeria.

The Oluwo made this suggestion on Tuesday while speaking at a farmer-herder summit held in Iwo Local Government of Osun State.

He said “there must be the death penalty for kidnappers and no Human Rights advocate should kick against that. Government must begin to kill corrupt people irrespective of their ethnicity, be it Fulani Hausa, Yoruba or any tribe.

“If the security forces cannot enforce the law, then there would be anarchy, ritualists, corrupt people, kidnappers should be killed henceforth.”

He also charged herders in his local government to work hand in hand with him to ensure that criminals perpetrating abductions and killings in Iwo get arrested.

“I want you to work with me to identify criminals penetrating your ranks so that I would not join those who are calling for your expulsion in the Southwest

“You would chase the criminals always by working with the chiefs, and security agencies. I still stand by my words that Fulani should come and stay in Iwo, but I don’t want criminals because we can’t identify with them,” he said.

The monarch also called for the recruitment of more policemen and community policing.

“Security challenges would be significantly solved if the government gives traditional rulers constitutional power. I also prefer devolution of power, not restructuring. Then we also need State Police.

29/03/2020

The Osun State Government has announced the total lockdown of the state following the confirmation of the second case of the deadly Coronavirus.

The Government reaffirmed the commitment to shut down all the land boundaries effective from midnight, Sunday, March 29, 2020.

The Governor of the State, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, made the disclosure during a statewide broadcast on Sunday morning.

Oyetola maintained that there would be no movement within the State during the shutdown while those on essential duties such as health personnel, fire service, environmental officials, security personnel, power and water supply agencies, media and telecommunication officers will be on duty.

He described the decision as “imperative” in view of the devastating nature of the pandemic, adding that “the first priority of any responsive and responsible government is to respond effectively to protect its citizens when an emergency occurs”.

Oyetola, who expressed sadness over the latest incident, reiterated that the decision remained the only way to go if the State was to contain the spread of the disease.

He said, “Following a review of our current situation, we have in addition to the subsisting measures taken in the past one week, decided to shut down all our boundaries, effective from midnight Sunday, March 29, 2020. In addition, a complete lockdown of the State will come into effect from midnight, Tuesday, March 31, 2020

“We believe this is the way to go, if we must contain the spread of this virus. To this end, we urge citizens and residents to take advantage of the hours between now and Tuesday to stock up provisions that will last them two weeks in the first instance.

“During the lockdown, there will be no movement within the state. The closed boundaries also means there will be no inter-state movements. However, those on essential duties such as health personnel, fire service, environmental officials, security personnel, power and water supply agencies, media and telecommunication officers will be on duty. Also, pharmaceutical and medical outfits will be allowed to open.

“We have mandated and mobilised the State’s taskforce and security operatives to enforce measures to the letter. We, therefore, strongly advise our people to remain in their homes during the period of the lockdown.”

The governor urged the residents not to panic by the new measures but continue to adhere to government’s instructions and directives.

Osun State government screens foreigners at mining sites

Worried by the impact and global spread of coronavirus, the Osun State Government has begun screening of foreigners at mining sites as proactive and preventive measures to forestall spread of the disease to the state.

It cautioned miners at various sites to maintain quality control and prevent substances from solid minerals from polluting sources of water in the state.

This followed fears being expressed by citizens that the activities of miners had caused serious pollution to Osun River.

Investigations revealed that in the past four weeks, water in the river had turned brownish, a development that raised fears that chemical substances emanating from mining activities might have crept into and polluted the river.

River Osun flows into the state’s waterworks, a major dam that supplies water to Osogbo, Ede and other communities.

The screening was championed by the state Ministry of Health as part of government’s strategy to check the influx of foreigners and illegal miners into the state perceived to be the source of the spread of coronavirus.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Rafiu Isamotu said the exercise held at some mining sites at Ife South Council Area was aimed at mapping out the Chinese foreigners and other immigrants to ensure that the state was free from the dreaded Coronavirus and other epidemic diseases ravaging the world.

He, however, stated that the foreigners were thoroughly examined and none was infected with the disease.

Also speaking, Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Health, Siji Olamiju, said the action was in furtherance of government’s commitment to stem the epidemic in the state as Governor Gboyega Oyetola’s administration was determined to promote quality healthcare delivery.

He said, “We are here in line with our strategy to map out the Chinese foreigners who could be the source of contamination with our people on coronavirus. Our aim is not to stigmatise them, but to prevent those who might have been infected from spreading the virus.”

Olamiju noted that the exercise on the containment of coronavirus had uncovered another public health challenge caused by illegal mining, adding that the state government would not tolerate any form of irresponsible mining capable of causing environmental degradation.

Two to die by hanging for murder in Osun.

An Osun State High Court sitting in Ikirun has sentenced two men, Abiodun Orisakunle and Olayinka Opadokun, to death by hanging for murder.

The convicts had pleaded not guilty to two counts bordering on conspiracy and murder pressed against them.

But Justice Jide Falola pronounced them guilty of the charge after prosecution proved that they were involved in the death of one Adeoye Matthew.

Three suspects – Orisakunle, 21; Opadokun, 29 and Femi Aroyehun, 24 – were first arraigned on January 22, 2018 for murder.

The police had said the offence contravened “sections 319 (1), 316 (1) and 324 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 34, Vol. 2, Laws of Osun State.”

While the case lasted, the prosecution team from the Ministry of Justice, led by Philips Afolayan called Oladipupo Damilare, Sergeant Aina Clement and Sergeant Josephine Erokpo to proof its case.

In its presentation before the court, the prosecution said the late Matthew Adeoye was returning from work with his friend, Damilare Oladipupo, on March 9, 2017, walking along Babjo Secondary School, Idi- Iroko Area, Ikirun, Osun State.

One of the accused, Orisakunle, it was learnt, hit the deceased with a motorcycle and an argument ensued between them.

In the melee that followed, some members of a group known as Olowoaye Boys intervened and took side with Orisakunle, and chased both Adeoye and Oladipupo away.

They eventually caught up with Adeoye and lynched him, thereby inflicting grievous wounds on his head.

Residents of the area where the attack occurred were said to have reported the incident to the police, whose operatives moved Adeoye to Araromi Hospital, Ikirun where he died few hours after.

Barrister Afolayan also tendered the statements of the nominal complainants as well as those of the three accused persons before the court.

14/10/2019

Indigenes of Osun State working at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, have raised an alarm of a purported attack on the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Michael Ologunde by some Oyo state indigenes over the protracted crisis in the school.

It was also alleged that some other Osun indigenes working in the institution are also targeted for attack over what is described as usurping the duties of Oyo indigenes. The alarm was raised by a group of Osun indigenes under the aegis of Osun Forum in a statement signed by its Chairman, Mr. Oladele Osunmakinde and made available to journalists in Osogbo during the weekend.

The group described as unwarranted harassment of Osun indigenes at the Ogbomoso campus of the university during the commendation service in honor of the departed former Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Professor Taiwo Adewole. It urged indigenes of the two owner states to desist from fanning the ember of disunity and allow the governors of the states to sit together and fashioned out paths to take the institution to greater heights.

The statement reads, “Records indicate that the two owner states have not been adequately alive to their responsibility on salary payments. The Oyo State government in the first three months of salary payments from January to March 2019 released N73 million per month each which amounted to N219million.

Though, it later released N295m each for the months of April, May and June 2019. “When it got to the turn of Osun state, it also released N300 million since for July 2019 till date which is well marginally above what Oyo State paid during her first three months of salary payments.

With this record, accusing fingers should not be directed at only one state but rather, the two states should be encouraged to do more for the Institution in rebuilding the legacy of the best state University achieved by the past administrations of Oyo and Osun for several years”.

It regretted that the people who were traditionally brothers are now perceived enemies over a reconcilable disagreement on purported non-payment of staff salary by Osun state government.

The group appealed to Governors Seyi Makinde and Gboyega Oyetola to expedite actions on their planned meeting before ‘xenophobic attack’ becomes legalized in LAUTECH. The forum emphasized the need for the two owner states to be more committed in their responsibility towards staff welfare both at LAUTECH, Ogbomoso, and the Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, saying doing that would make an issue of funding and ownership crisis a thing of the past.

The group also resolved among other things that, “the two owner states should come out clear and give commitments to the joint ownership of the University and the host community should be encouraged to avoid xenophobic induced agitations as we are kinsmen of same-origin”. It also urged the two owner states to publish their financial commitment to the institution (University and Teaching Hospital), since the crisis erupted in 2010 by past administrations of the two states.

While appealing to the Governor of Osun, Mr. Gboyega Oyetola, to pay immediate visit to Osun indigenes in LAUTECH, Ogbomoso, to assuage their fears of being seen as foreigners occupying native job positions in LAUTECH, Ogbomoso which is their joint patrimony, the group called on the Federal Government, Oyo and Osun states to provide adequate security for them as the group alleged that its members currently live in fear of being attacked.

"LAUTECH unions being used against Oyetola"

The Chief Press Secretary to Osun State Governor, Mr Ismail Omipidan, on Friday claimed that the Academic Staff Union of Universities and Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities in Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, were being used by some people against the Gboyega Oyetola administration.

Although he did not mention those using the unions, Omipidan said when the representatives of the state government met with the leaders of both unions recently, they denied their allegations against the state.

The CPS, who spoke on Rave FM, said Oyetola’s administration had refused to take issues with Oyo State Government on the matter because it believed in amicable resolution of issues.

LAUTECH is jointly owned by Osun and Oyo states.

He said, “Last Wednesday, we read in the papers that ASUU had singled out Osun State Government for blame because of the delay in payment their salaries.

“On Thursday, we held a meeting attended by Dr Olaniyan Olatunji and Chief Adeniyi Adediran as representatives of ASUU and NASU respectively. They vehemently disowned the reports in the newspapers.

“The Vice-Chancellor that day also came with a prepared communiqué, and in it there was nowhere it was alleged that the Osun State Government owed salaries.

“Despite having seven of the eight faculties of LAUTECH in Oyo State, among other lopsidedness in the distribution of the university’s assets, Osun has never failed in its responsibilities.”

Omipidan said the university got a grant of N3bn from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund and that the projects financed with the fund were executed at the main campus of the university in Ogbomoso.

He said from January to June, while Oyo was paying the workers of the university in Ogbomoso, Osun was also paying salaries of workers at the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital in Osogbo.

He said, “It amounts to over N16bn at the moment. Oyo cannot force us to pay lecturers in the university in Ogbomoso.”

However, NASU Chairman, LAUTECH, Ogbomoso chapter, Joel Ojewande, denied that the unions were being used against the Osun State Government.

He said the state government often complained whenever it was its turn to pay salaries of LAUTECH staff, adding that the state should relinquish its ownership if the state could not meet its obligations.

He said, “Osun only paid us in July, while Oyo had paid from January to June. They have started again. Do they want to kill us? Why are they politicising everything?

“If they don’t have money, let them tell us. If they want to relinquish their joint ownership, let them do it. Let them quit if they can no longer fund the university.”

Aregbesola, Osun deputy gov, traditional rulers, others converge on Ife as Ooni celebrates Olojo festival.

Dignitaries, including the Minister for Interior, Mr Rauf Aregbesola; Osun State deputy governor, Mr Benedict Alabi; among others, on Saturday, converged on Ile-Ife for the celebration of 2019 Olojo festival.

Different sociocultural groups paid homage to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, as part of the activities marking this year’s Olojo festival.

Speaking at the festival, President Muhammadu Buhari, represented by Aregbesola, tasked Nigerians to protect their cultural heritage which he said serves as true identities of all tribes and ethnic nationalities.

According to him, “people and culture are inseparable since there is no denial of the fact that what makes human society is its culture.”

The president, who said he was delighted to see how people of Ile-Ife have been so passionate and committed to the preservation of cultural heritage, said for a society to be societal, it must be cultural, saying society and culture are intertwined.

“The culture and tradition of a people are their identities as it affords them due recognition. It is their underlying distinguishing factor from other peoples and cultures. In fact, all societies across the globe have various and divergent cultures which they cherish and practice,” Buhari said.

In his remark, Governor Gboyega Oyetola congratulated the people of the ancient town on the success of this year’s festival, describing Olojo festival as significant because it affords the Yoruba people the opportunity to showcase their cultural heritage.

Represented by his deputy, Mr Benedict Alabi, the governor said ‘Olojo festival is promoting our culture and tradition to the whole world. The festival has shown to the whole world that Yoruba culture is very rich.”

We’re closing in on fleeing kidnappers – Osun police

The Osun State Police Command, on Tuesday, said its operatives were closing in on the gunmen, who abducted some passengers at Ajeoku in the Obokun Local Government Area of the state on Sunday.

The spokesperson for the command, Folasade Odoro, said though policemen and local hunters had secured the release of the victims, the operatives were still on the trail of the abductors.

She said that the police would not relent until the perpetrators were apprehended and made to face justice.

She added that some of the kidnappers escaped with bullet wounds and advised residents of the area to assist the police by giving timely information on suspicious movements to security agents.

Odoro said, “We are on the trail of the criminals to arrest them and we will not relent until they are arrested. We want to use this incident to send a signal to others.

“The operation to rescue the victims was led by the Commissioner of Police and other senior officers and it was professionally handled. With support from other security agencies, the criminals were overpowered and must have been seriously injured during the exchange of gunfire.

“We are quite sure that, with the team put in place, we will get them and reveal their identities to the world.”

Odoro commended the efforts of the Oodua Peoples Congress, vigilantes and local hunters, saying they did well in assisting the police to rescue the victims.

In a related development, traditional rulers in the local government area met in Ibokun on Tuesday to strategise on ways to prevent kidnappings and other violent crimes in the area.

Also at the meeting, which held behind closed-doors, were top policemen working in the area as well as representatives of the hunters, among others.

Meanwhile, the state House of Assembly has set up a five-man committee to look into the issue of insecurity, especially kidnapping in the state.

The committee, headed by the Majority Leader of the House, Moruf Olanrewaju, was directed by the Speaker, Mr Timothy Owoeye, to meet with key security stakeholders and kidnapped victims in order to have a deeper understanding of the issues surrounding violent crimes in the state.
