A two-storey building at Bigard Seminary Avenue by Hassan Lane Uwani, Enugu state, has been set ablaze by a 39-year-old mentally deranged lady.

The lady, whose mental breakdown was said to have started since 2017, was said to have run berserk when her parents attempted to send her to a psychiatric hospital in Enugu.

The suspect who lives with her parents on the last floor of the two-storey building, started causing trouble lately, a development that forced her parents to invite policemen to help take her to the hospital.

An eyewitness told The Nation;

“But when the policemen came early this morning, and the lady noticed that she was about being taken away, she took the gallon containing fuel and poured the content everywhere.

“When the policemen climbed up the building, the lady lighted up the place. Her parents, who were coming up with the policemen and the cops themselves all ran for their lives.

“Her mother’s shout of fire helped us to know that something was wrong. But, soonest, men of the Enugu State Fire Service rushed here and put out the fire that already consumed the two flats up.

“The fire men were able to save the entire building from burning completely.”

While no life was lost in the incident, the inferno however destroyed properties worth millions.

The fire affected the last floor of the building and would have spread to the entire house and adjoining buildings but for the alarm raised by the residents.

Firefighters quickly responded to the alarm and brought the situation under control immediately.

The lady who was later rescued from the burning fire, has been taken to the Enugu Neuropsychiatric Hospital.

Facebook’s parent company, Meta Platforms Inc, said on Wednesday, Nov. 9, that it will let go of 13 percent of its workforce, or more than 11,000 employees.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the news in a blog post, saying he was at fault for being overoptimistic about the company’s future growth based on a pandemic surge.

Zuckerberg wrote: "At the start of Covid, the world rapidly moved online and the surge of e-commerce led to outsized revenue growth.

"Many people predicted this would be a permanent acceleration that would continue even after the pandemic ended. I did too, so I made the decision to significantly increase our investments. Unfortunately, this did not play out the way I expected."

Zuckerberg said the company would now become "leaner and more efficient" by cutting spending and staff, and shift more resources to "a smaller number of high priority growth areas," including ads, AI, and the metaverse.

Zuckerberg said that the company’s recruiting team would be particularly "disproportionately affected" by the cuts.

In the blog post announcing Meta’s cuts, Zuckerberg said laid off employees in the US would receive 16 weeks of base pay plus two additional weeks for each year of service, health insurance coverage for six months, and support for finding a new career and navigating immigration issues.

Zuckerberg said the company would be instituting a hiring freeze through the first quarter of 2023 "with a small number of exceptions."

The broad job cuts, the first in Meta’s 18-year history, follow thousands of layoffs at other leading tech companies including Elon Musk-owned Twitter and Microsoft Corp.

Man att@cks cleaner who interrupted his intimate moment in nightclub toilet

A man att@cked a cleaner when he was caught in the midst of an intimate act with a woman inside a disabled toilet.

Ex-army aircraft mechanic Billy Dean Fallon, 28, was getting intimate with a woman when the cleaner knocked on the toilet door, so he rushed out of the cubicle to beat up the cleaner.

He admitted assault occasioning bodily harm at Southport Magistrates Court in Queensland, Australia on Monday, November 7, and was ordered to pay the victim $1,500.

The incident took place at Nightjar nightclub in Burleigh Heads in January this year.

CCTV played at the court shows the 28-year-old clubgoer rushing out of the disabled toilet cubicle without a shirt and throwing a flurry of punches at the cleaner, who had been knocking on the door for about three minutes.

A woman walked out from the cubicle holding two drinks while watching Fallon beating the cleaner at the other side of the toilet.

Fallon was pulled away by a security guard, who came in with other witnesses, before he reported the incident to the police.

Defending, lawyer Angus Edwards said Fallon was in the cubicle becoming intimate with his partner, adding: "They were in the midst of becoming intimate when someone started banging on the door.

"He acted impulsively, he acted protectively and he thought he was protecting himself and his partner."

Magistrate Michelle Dooley said the attack on the cleaner was uncalled for as he was simply doing his job.

"This individual was engaged in his normal employment, was clearly unaffected by alcohol and just going about his normal duties as part of his job," she continued.

Fallon was sentenced to 12 months in jail but was given immediate parole. He was ordered to pay the cleaner $1500 in compensation.
