💧 Why Your Kitchen Sink Tap Has Low Pressure

After 10 years as a plumber, I’ve noticed one thing again and again — most kitchen taps have low water pressure! 🤔

Here’s why 👇

1️⃣ Clogged Aerator – That little mesh at the tip of your tap traps dirt and limescale. Clean or replace it regularly. 🧽

2️⃣ Kinked or Blocked Hose – The flexible hose under your sink can bend or clog over time.

3️⃣ Faulty Mixer Cartridge – If your mixer tap is old or dirty inside, it can slow water flow.

4️⃣ Weak Supply Line – Sometimes, the kitchen is connected to a smaller pipe or overhead tank with low pressure.

5️⃣ Dirty Stop Valves or Filters – Those small valves under your sink also need a check once in a while.

Plumber tip: Always start by checking and cleaning — most times, you don’t need a new tap at all!

Today I successfully completed the installation of a water tank on a newly constructed tank stand. The task involved securing the tank in place without stripping any screws, connecting the inlet and outlet pipes without causing a flood, and ensuring proper alignment so water flows smoothly and doesn't spray everywhere. Prior to mounting, I checked the stand’s level and stability, as a level base is essential. Following positioning, I fitted a ball valve, overflow, and drain connections, as these are critical components of a reliable water storage setup. Finally, I flushed the lines, tested for leaks, and confirmed that water is flowing smoothly into the house. All systems are functioning perfectly, and the customer expressed satisfaction with the reliable water storage setup. Another day, another job well done ✅💪

Today started off with a routine call — “toilet blocked in the girls’ washroom.” Nothing unusual, but I’ve learned that “routine” in plumbing can turn into a mystery real fast.

When I got there, the janitor had already put up the “Out of Order” sign. The stall had that telltale slow-draining water, not overflowing yet but definitely not clearing on its own. I put on my gloves and got down to work.

At first glance, everything looked fine from the outside. I tried a few flushes to test it — same result, water rising, then slowly trickling down. Classic blockage. I went for the plunger first — a few good pushes, some bubbles, but no luck. Time to bring out the auger.

Once I fed the snake down into the trap, I felt something soft but stubborn. Not the usual paper wad — this had a bit of give, like fabric. I twisted and worked it gently until it started to move. When I finally pulled it out, I couldn’t help but shake my head — a small piece of clothing, tangled up and soaked. Looked like someone must’ve dropped it in by mistake and tried to flush it away.

After removing the fabric, I ran several test flushes. Smooth as ever — water swirling down perfectly. I disinfected the area, cleaned my tools, and left everything neat.

Funny thing about this job — you never really know what’s waiting for you behind that first flush. One day it’s paper towels, the next it’s a missing sock. But that’s plumbing life: half detective, half problem-solver, and always ready for surprises.

This morning started like any other — a call came in from the maintenance office about a blocked toilet in the girls’ restroom. I grabbed my tools, gloves, and auger, and headed over expecting the usual — maybe too much tissue, or a sanitary item flushed down by accident.

When I arrived, the smell confirmed it wasn’t just a slow flush. I put on my gloves and got to work. After checking the flush mechanism and water flow, it was clear the problem wasn’t in the cistern but deeper in the trap.

I started by plunging — no luck. Then I ran the auger down the bend of the toilet. About a foot in, I felt resistance — not the usual solid blockage, but something soft and tangled. Carefully, I twisted and pulled it out bit by bit until a piece of wet fabric appeared.

Turned out, it was part of a small item of clothing maybe a piece of undergarment or cloth someone had accidentally dropped in and tried to flush. It had lodged perfectly in the trap, catching paper and debris until the line was almost completely blocked.

After removing the fabric, I flushed the system several times to make sure the flow was back to normal. Everything cleared beautifully, and the water level settled just right.

I cleaned the area, disinfected my tools, and wrote the maintenance note
It’s not unusual to find strange things down drains — from toys to wipes to jewelry — but a piece of clothing in a toilet always makes for an interesting story. Just another day in the life of a plumber: never quite knowing what’s waiting behind the next flush.
