In this video we have crossbred goats, specifically a mix of the and the .
The WAD goat is indigenous to parts of West Africa and is renowned for its extreme hardiness and adaptability to harsh conditions. Crucially for the rainforest, they exhibit a remarkable natural resistance to common diseases and parasites, including trypanosomiasis, which is a significant challenge in humid, tsetse-fly infested areas.
Their robust build, often seen in the larger, darker doe (the mother goat) in this picture, allows them to navigate dense undergrowth and tolerate high humidity and rainfall without succumbing to foot rot or other moisture-related ailments as easily as less adapted breeds.
The Red Sokoto, while also a Nigerian breed, is known for its good meat and skin production qualities. They are highly adaptable and possess decent growth rates.
The reddish hue on the younger kids in the picture is a strong indicator of this genetic influence. They contribute to the overall productivity of the herd – better growth for meat and potentially improved reproductive rates.
The Cross will improve Hybrid Vigor/Heterosis in Rainforest Nigeria;
By crossing these two breeds, we achieve hybrid vigor. This means the offspring inherit the best traits from both parents, often resulting in animals that are superior to either purebred in a specific environment.
