I was reading Luke 4,the temptation of Jesus and realized it’s probably the first time I’ve read it for myself.
For years, I thought the temptations were just the three scenarios we always hear about in church. But reading closely, I noticed something:
The Bible says Jesus was in the wilderness for 40 days being tempted.
The entire 40 days was already a season of ongoing temptation. Then, after those days, when He became hungry, the devil came with the “turn this stone to bread” and “jump from here” conversations. We’re only told of the temptations that happened after the fast.
Here are some lessons I picked up:
1. You are likely to have many temptations, perhaps multiple daily, here on earth/wilderness.
This season of temptation will come, even when you’re full of the Spirit.
Jesus went into the wilderness led by the Spirit, yet He faced temptation. The same Spirit that led Him there was also the One that strengthened Him to overcome.
2. The devil knows your needs.
He will dangle them in front of you, often wrapped as a quick fix. But not every solution is from God. Jesus really needed food after 40 days, but who was offering it made all the difference. Sometimes the question is not, “Do I need this?” but “Where is it coming from, and how will it affect my future?”
3. Temptation doesn’t end once you’ve conquered it.
Luke 4:13 says the devil left Jesus “until an opportune time.” That means he comes back. He waits for when you’re tired, angry, hungry, lonely, or in need.
If there’s anything this post should provide you, it should be that passing a test today doesn’t exempt you from future test!
So we must always be spiritually alert.
The truth is, temptations will always be dangled before you, needs, desires, opportunities.
But the real test is in discerning the source and waiting for God’s provision. Because what comes from God adds no sorrow, but what comes from the enemy could cost you years down the line.
If you consider your future and the role God plays in the big plan, you’ll have your reason to stay SOLID!
Always pause and ask: Is this God’s hand or a trap?
